- The M3 Lee, was an American medium tank named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
Intended as a replacement for the unsuccessful M2 Medium Tank, the M3 was produced and designed in a rush after the war broke out.
The basis for the M3 proofed to be incredibly successful and the development of the M3 helped to speed up the development of the M4 Sherman.
Even due the M3 was a rushed obsolete, awkward design it served as a front-line tank the entire length of the war and proofed to be really effective in the Pacific campaign, but the high silhouette and main gun position were still a big downside, but it was reliable, had good armor and, great firepower.
In Britain, the tank was called the Grant named after Union general Ulysses S. Grant.
British army didn't like the overall design of the tank, but pushed for it's production since it was the only model suitable for instant mass-production, and it became the warhorse of the British army during 1941-42.
The M3 was produced from 1941 until 1942 and approximately 6,258 were made.

My favorite tank since childhood
I grew up where a war museum had one of these and a Stuart tank. It was cool to see up close.
Your lucky, I never seen one in real life, they are incredibly rare in Europe.
Got to love the Lee.
Always interesting to see Lee footage.
Cool footage. Somehow I missed this in my feed.
Unique Tank
My favorite tank of American tanks.
Wonderful footage! Do you happen to know where the footage of the M3s rolling ashore was filmed? It seems like a proper landing stage (the tanks seem to be landing on concrete, and there are boats around), but certainly not some major port (like Oran, or so).
Thanks for the help in advance!
Great footage, annoying that I did not get any notification.
That happens a lot.
O K -- So NOW we know the tank will START and drive down the road. A still photograph would have sufficed. !!!!!!
The M3 Lee in the footage is seen operating somewhere in Southeast Asia (most likely Burma). Very formidable to the Japanese whom possessed few anti-tank and capable tanks.
The yellow markers means it was in Africa, somewhere in Tunisia.
A very nice footage of the M3 Lee but I do have a dumb question for you: is colourized or original colour footage? Fact is that the M3 Lee was originally intended as a much needed stopgap especially to fill the ranks of the British Army after losing so many tanks and war materials during the fall of France. Despite its height it was a very valuable stopgap as it was very reliable. Thanks for sharing this cool footage and I wish you a merry Xmas and a happy new year 👍👍🎅
I think this is actual real color footage, but can also be that this was colored after the war like they did with a lot of pacific footage.
@@PanzerInsight thanks for replying 👍 👍👍
Was that footage from 4.20 to 4.40 Primosole Bridge?
Why is the turret partly pixeled by the editor?
It looked like there were charred human remains on the hull and he had to pixilate them to keep UA-cam off of him.
Where do you see a pixelated turret?
It's the time bar that has been removed.
It's spelled colour
Not in America.
in funzione c/aerea.
