Hi Everyone and Welcome Back To My Bucolic Life Channel. Meet my new sewing tutorial.
This time I am making a retro wrap dress, by request. So, because it is me there are a couple things I changed and wish I had changed but didn't. There is a low bust adjustment to make sure my darts aren't pointing to nothing... and also I made my own bias tape out of the same fabric instead of purchasing 1/4" double fold. About that bias tape, I sewed it on using what I think is a more trouble free method too. Anyhow, I hope you like it!

Great job in the walk-away. Nice to see someone make it without all the complaints. You just fix as you go and are so calm about the challenges. Love watching you! Keep up the good work!
By FAR THE BEST WALK AWAY DRESS tutorial I have seen. Your tried and true method for making this dress shines… Great job! The pattern has flaws in it but you overcame many of them. EXCELLENT!
I would agree. It seems that the other ones I have seen struggled quite a bit with it. Marie just breezed through and explained it so well.
You are all much to kind 😊😊🥰
this dress looks fabulous on you.
I cut out and sewed most of this dress in 2006 and then it sat in the naughty corner for years. Came out at the beginning of the pandemic and a lot of the fit issues I had on my note that was with it were different. Made some changes, got frustrated. Pulled it out again the February.
Couple of things I figured out: some similar wrap dresses/blouses from.the time had higher front armscyes and some people added a second higher fastener to bodice. I used elastic to connect the back. For the front closure, I ended up on a whim cutting off the ends of a broken belt and adding the buckle a d short piece of the eyelet end to the front .
Everything you stated as far as the alterations (shortened bodice, wider shoulders, to name a few) were the same changes I made to my version. I have a higher waist too and wider hips, so I had to change these things. I attached my bias tape exactly as you did. I tried it the way the pattern instructed and it was not as neat. I did make mine longer and added extra panels to the back of the inner sheath, with ties instead of a button so I could have coverage should an ill-timed gust of wind decide to blow my outer skirt up. This is one of those “try it their way first and then fix it your way later” type of patterns😊. Thank you for being so precise in your sew-alongs and explaining the why’s and how’s. This was a great tutorial❤
The sheen on the fabric makes you look like a total ROCK STAR!! Such an interesting design. Very pretty.
I’m so glad you ‘Do You’❤ please don’t change or rush or any of that. My sewing skill has grown by leaps and bounds. I like YOUR ways and how you challenge me to read and edit. I never feel like I’ve wasted time watching your UA-cam channel. And having you tell me what you don’t like about other people I probably don’t watch because of that very reason why I stopped watching them sorry..I digress. You look stunning! I love the Polish on your nails; I love the make and an inspired to make it..I have the pattern.. You look really nice. As always thanks for being authentically YoU!
Thank you so much!! And it is a rare day that my nails look nice, thanks for noticing 😊
Thank you for you insight on the sewing of, fitting and wearing of this dress. Also what a beautifully restored/repaired Singer Machine!
Good morning from Canada! love the dress
Absolutely stunning Marie ❤
It looks beautiful on you. You have the figure for it. A red bra will do the trick with the arm holes. You’re young and the shortness of the front is really cute on you. Thank for remind us the trick with the clear polish. I always forget. 😊
What a cute dress, perfect holiday dress👍🏻
Lovely! I just sat down with a cup of tea to have a rest and there's a brand new video from you to watch. So relaxing but inspirational too. It's just after 1pm in UK.
Very cute...
I love the lipstick red fabric! So pretty!!
Adorable. I love it on you
I feel the exact same about reviews. I like watching tutorials, as I'm working. But, half the fun is the challenge of it and someone else's experience shouldn't deter you.
Wow. This dress came out so nice. It just took too much to adjusting to fit and stay on correctly and comfortable to my liking. Maybe if I draft the pattern to my body.
It really looks beautiful on you. I actually liked the high in the front lower in the back hem the dress had before you adjusted it as well. Great job.
By far the best video on this dress (IMO). Looks fantastic.
It's beautiful Marie you look like a teenager ❤️👌😊
Thank you for the bias binding tip I have always struggled to make it look neat on the right side and now I know where I've been going wrong. It seems like common sense really but I've never thought to do it that way. Thanks again 😊
How lovely to see you wearing your beautiful blouse! I'm loving binging all your videos. You are THE best teacher on UA-cam. You have a flexible approach to sewing and a can-do attitude. I love your machines too. Thank you! X
☺️😊
Beautiful job Marie! Lots of learning tidbits to file away for later, thank you 😊
Beautiful ❤❤❤❤
I have been wanting to make the walk away dress and watched several of the brave who made it on youtube. From watching, it appears the pattern will need alteration on fitting problems have noticed. I think I will make a mockup using old sheet so I will get the fit. I too use the same method of applying bias tape, I always get a perfect result! Love your old Singer, I have several hand cranks that I enjoy owing and puttering with, cleaning and sewing. The pretty little red dress, you did excellent and likely the best I've seen on youtube. You are lucky to have a nice smaller waist, looks pretty. I don't have much of a waist, my hips are very small so no hour glass for me.
Wonderful dress Marie, it fits you well. I always learn something new to help me with my sewing when watching your videos. Thank you for sharing ❤
You had way less problems than some of the other makes of this dress I have seen. For one thing, you are a great problem solver. Another thing is that I think others were using an original older pattern and the wrong size for themselves, sometimes, with some sizing up as well as adjusting to body shape. It looks like yours is a more modern remake pattern. I don't see how anyone could make this in a morning and wear it to lunch. Just making the bias tape would take me half the day. It came out really cute and the bright red suits you. Great job again!
Yes the original pattern had those 2 darts joined it looked crazy to our modern eyes.
That engineering brain of Marie's is what I enjoy seeing. How she comes at a problem in sewing. 👍🩷
I agree that you've done this pattern better than some others I've watched. Looks cute on you. Unfortunately, I think it doesn't fit anyone particularly well. I was happy to see you lower bust point, because I would need to do that also. But, no one has addressed the problem with the arm hole. Maybe that's just something you would need to accept.
Thanks for another great sew along
Adorable dress this is also perfect for a bridal rehearsal dinner! You did a fantastic job
❤great tutorial. Best one i have seen. I might try making a fuller front piece. Maybe separate the front bodice from the skirt and add a partial circle skirt. Maybe a mock up first.
If I did it again I'd use a circle skirt piece instead of the straight skirt for the front. Good luck!
Thanks so much for doing this one, especially with the reproduction version of the pattern. I've been wanting to see how various issues with the reproduction could be dealt with, but most of the challenge videos I've seen out there are using the antique version, graded up.
Glad it was helpful!
It turned out really cute. I like it a lot!❤️
The red is just stunning on you, great job! You found a good way of adjusting the finished dress to fit your particular shape, although I would love to see how it would look/fit were you to alter the pattern ahead of time (i.e., shorter waist length in back, possibly cutting the front under-bust wrap pieces a little lower). As for the straight under skirt creeping up, that is obviously a flaw in the pattern design. Despite these glitches, however, the style so suits you I can't help but wonder how it would look made out of silk for a more formal occasion. Possibly you'd want to face rather than use bias tape. Whatever, the red is lovely and you are truly rocking it!
Adorable. So longer staight shirt.
I think it would work better if the front skirt was more A line than straight... IMO
Beautifully done as usual!
To solve the wrinkling at the button part of mine I used a zip tie and sewed it into the bias tape.
Love the color of this dress. I don’t have a bias type maker, but if I sewed garments, I’d buy one for sure. 😊 I have never tried to make a French seam, but it presents a very neat appearance when completed. The underarm area on this dress & the very narrow inner skirt would both drive me a bit crazy, but for a special occasion it’s sometimes worth the inconvenience to wear a lovely red dress-even one that’s got a couple of issues. (Mom always warned us that beauty was painful as she brushed tangles from our hair.🤣) Thanks for sharing your project.
Hahaha I enjoyed your comments Norma C. I would suggest you try a French seam first sure as they really are nice. Maybe one of Marie 's earlier videos shows her doing the steps...not hard.🤗
Wow! That is beautiful on you!
Thank you! I love this silhouette on you. A party dress for sure!
Super super cute make! And I ALWAYS learn SOMETHING from each of your tutorials 🎉
Hi loved todays pattern
You look great n Thankz for showing us bias binding
Caroline
You look good in this dress! I love watching your tutorials. Thank you! 😊
Thank you
I like your version much better, but I'm not surprised lol
That is lovely on you! Great sewing and altering tips, I also prefer to sew on bias tape as you did. You have beautiful rings, as a jeweller I'm itching to put them in the ultrasonic bath to get them all shiny and clean. :)
I know, I am so bad at cleaning them thank you for the reminder. I'm going to go pop them in my ultrasonic cleaner right now and give them a good scrub. I'm always working on things and I try to remember to wear gloves and such but I don't always. Thank you for watching.
I’ve seen several of these and your fit is the best and makes a huge difference in appearance. Cute.
Oddly many people are referring to it as an apron dress. It doesn't remind me of an apron at all. I do like the monotone.
Oh its beautiful!❤ i love it.❤
I also purchased the leather punch through you link. Great idea!
You so gorgeous in your red dress with your red hair and lips. Now wear some nice jewelry necklace and earrings to match. You’re a doll!
The dress is so cute. I like the way you put on the bias tape. That was a good tip on using the treadle knowing which way to push down with your foot to make the hand wheel go the right way so we can keep both hands on the fabric.
Your a good sport Marie to take on this dress! Your fabric is very pretty 😊. The design of the dress seems to have notorious fit problems. Stay stitching and your seam finish choices were good. Having made lots of bias I would draw your lines for sure. Use the clear ruler it's 2" but if you have a longer one even better. When you sew it in the tube don't worry about the lines matching up. Just remember to off set that first width 😊. You can save a bit of time on the cutting if you lay your piece on the table making sure you have some lines matching with lines underneath you can cut up a ways on several strips. Hope this makes sense 😬 as it's hard to explain lol.
Maybe a different fabric and more length . Very elegant dress though . ❤
I have the pattern, I have seen a pattern for the opposite direction. The dress closes the back to the front first and the circle skirt on the front ties in the back with long flowing ties. I’m going to chop it up and move it back to front I think.
You are so detailed and thorough. I really appreciate it. Especially with the skirt hem marker. I just picked one up at an antique store but had no idea how to use it, so thank you for the short tutorial. Also, the dress looks amazing!
Love your make of this dress! Better than the others I have seen!
Shoulder pads would help
I was thinking MOB dress!
I would like to have seen it a bit longer, more elegant.
I have this pattern
Have you ever had a fabric where you couldn't write on either side to make your markings? What would you do in that scenario?
Sometimes I put a little piece of colored tape on 😂
@@mybucoliclife That's what I did, too! 😂 Didn't know if there was a better method.
Super cute dress on you! Really appreciated the bias tape making portion of the video. Is there a number on your tape maker gadget?
It says 2.5 cm. Just the width. They come in many different sizes but this is my favorite 😊
Thank you!
Hi Marie: if you were to add some type of weights the dress ,would that help the sliding up? I heard Queen Elizabeth had weights in her hems, to prevent her dresses from flying or rolling up.
I do love using weights! Unfortunately I don't think they would help much. It felt like it wanted to creep up because it was wrapped so straight across my thighs... Which are "ample" 🤣🤣
It’s darling on but not very practical and doesn’t look comfortable. You look gorgeous in it. ❤️
This is great! Any idea what the seam allowance is??
Probably 5/8" unless marked otherwise. Good luck
I was 1.5cm I found the instructions under all my fabric thanky you!
@@mybucoliclife
I love your style. I wonder, the pattern says to cut 2 3/3a I don't understand how to connect one to another as they are both curved. I re-watched the video, at section 28:50 I saw where my confusion is now clarified. I also cut one section (3) before adding (3a). So my option is to cut (3a) and see on to (3), or attach (3/3a) and recut as one piece. I do have enough fabric to cut (3/3a). What do you recommend?
If you have enough fabric to recut the entire joint piece of pattern I would do that. Just because that extra seam line might affect the way that it hangs. But depending on how busy your fabric is if you don't have enough to do that, I wouldn't worry about it put it together however you can
@@mybucoliclife thanks for the quick response. I have so many questions. 😂 I've decided to cut that extra quarter and attach. I'm not worried about the extra seam line. I'm going to try to hide the seams within the fold.
I like how the front closure comes right under the bust; it looks more flattering in my opinion. Would you make the darts in the back larger to make the back less baggy? I want to make this and I foresee that being an issue for me. I think I will also have a lot of loose, shapelessness right above the breasts in the armpit area. (I’m a beginner, so I am not familiar will how to adjust patterns.)
Hello. I think the back looks a little baggy because I should have shortened it for a higher waist. But every body is different. Hope yours turns out well
Hi! I would like to have the pattern number for the floral top you have on in this video. It's beautiful! Thanks Lisa Thank You! Your videos are sooooo informative!!!
