He's only superficially evil. He has a good heart deep down, but learns that he can't be conventionally "good" in school, where he's constantly outdone by Metroman. This is the first superhero movie I'd seen in a long time that treated the lone, geeky, under dog of the film as a villain. In any other film Hal probably would have been the hero but instead he's creepily realistic. The misunderstood loser who gets the girl in the end is such an overdone trope at this point that I'm sure many were genuinely surprised and probably made a bit uncomfortable when Hal turned to villainy. Most superhero stories prove anyone can be a hero but Megamind proves that anyone can be a villain.

I always thought it was shallow and objectifying when even Megamind says he’s the bad guy and “doesnt get the girl” because it totally is a matter of being a trophy and not a person. But I can appreciate that, despite the wording, Meganmind doesnt want “the girl”, he wants Roxanne because he genuinely likes her once he gets to know her as Bernard. Thus I also really appreciate that they didnt show any signs of him liking her until he was Bernard. I could see that he found her wit charming, but I find it more believeable that he also didnt see her as more than “the girl”/bait for Metro man until he got to know her which makes him much more sympathetic in that aspect. He also probably didnt even consider being with her since he had the same concrete idea of hero vs villain, but I think that also makes it much more wholesome. When he stopped thinking of himself as only a villain he was able to find his identity beyond that and who he’d want to be with rather than who he was “destined” to be with (either another villain (like minion, but purely in a platonic master/underling dynamic) or just himself since villains dont really get to have the “reward” of being in love).

      > 'I always thought it was shallow and objectifying when even Megamind says he’s the bad guy and “doesnt get the girl” because it totally is a matter of being a trophy and not a person.'
I'd add that this isn't Megamind 'objectifying' Roxanne as much as it is him venting about the 'story'/game they're all in (where he himself likewise isn't a person but just 'the bad guy'). In essence he's dialing back to what was simple and made sense in that moment because he convinced himself it hurt less to objectify HIMSELF, though he and anyone else watching can tell he's lying about that.
Just makes it all the better at the end where, after all his show & bravado & acting (as both Megamind & Metroman), she simply turns off his disguise watch & smiles at him - making it clear to him that he doesn't have to keep objectifying himself anymore.

@@DBArtsCreators That is an excellent point. While Metroman probably is most similar to people who were "forced" into the "good life" like the child of a great actor feeling like they had to become an actor (not to diminish that kind of struggle as with all the mental health issues that celebrities face, it definitely shows money, fame and adoration don't make you complete), Megamind definitely views them all as actors to a grand play, objectifying them all as a singular role instead of a person.
The movie really goes to great lengths to expose that all his excitement and pride of being a villain to Metroman is just surface level and once it's gone and he's stuck with himself, not only does he have to question what he has left, but even retroactively makes him realize he really wasn't happy about being a villain. He was just complacent and decided to roll with it to ignore how the fact that he didn't actually want to be "the bad guy."

This sounds to me like projection. We never see anyone bullying Hal, everyone's nice to him, even when he's obviously lying to and trying to manipulate them. It seems kind of weird that the filmmakers would have a character always treated well on screen, and then have him directly say that he turned villain because he was rejected by this one girl, and then to conclude that he did what he did because every time the camera looked away he was getting beat in the subway.
Also, the whole thing about doing the work and not getting the paycheck is exactly what we're talking about when we say he's an entitled creep. He had no desire to be a hero to help people: he's just a conman trying to emotionally blackmail someone into being with him. And Roxanne didn't promise him that, she didn't even ask anything of him. It'd be like if I mowed your lawn for you without asking, and then put a lien on your house. You didn't ask me to do that, you didn't even necessarily want your lawn mowed the way I did it -- I definitely don't have the right to force myself into your life like that, do something I decided to do, and then try to force something out of you in return. Like, of course that's not how it works -- imagine if someone you're not interested in decided to do something to make you like them? Are they entitled to your affection? First of all, this may very well be the first time I've given any consideration whatsoever to downloading an app that sponsored a UA-camr. As for the meat of the video, I know Hal all too well. He's something I very easily could have become, superpowers aside- arrogant, entitled, violently misogynistic, and with an ego so large it actually endangers himself and others around him. Megamind and Metro Man have egos, but not to the point of losing self-awareness or believing they're owed anything. Anyone has potential for great good or great evil, but only if they are allowed, and allow themselves, to realize that potential. Megamind, Metro Man and Hal were all given gifts, and powerful ones, and where they fall on a scale of morality is a matter of how they choose to use them. Dumbledore and Mewtwo both have lines about this sort of thing, but it's always sort of saddened and worried me that extreme intelligence as a "superpower" is associated with villains. Megamind eventually breaks that trope, but it's very much in effect in-universe, especially when you contrast him with Metro Man's more traditional Superman-like powers. You could sit around and pick Megamind apart for symbolism, metaphors, parallels with reality, and call-outs of traditional superhero stories and their blunders, because it's full of them, but not in a pretentious way, and can just as readily be watched completely non-critically, and THAT is what makes it a good movie and a good carrier of its messages.

Even that can be unprofessional, but it's at least within reason. Look at the difference between Megamind and Hal getting rejected. Megamind is devastated, but he walks away. He does try to argue with her, but in the end, he listens and accepts her answer. He doesn't do anything to hurt or scare her. And she's not afraid of him (physically) harming her, even if she's not sure what his "evil plot" is.
Hal terrifies her and then screams over her. He cares nothing about how scared she is or what she thinks or wants. He doesn't listen to a word she says. He does, at least, fly away. At first. But he also attempts to legitimately crush her with a bus later. Roxanne would not have been able to protect herself from that bus. And for what? Because she said they would never be a thing? Roxanne is never mean to Hal. She tries to maintain a professional working relationship with him. If he can't be real with her, how can she be real with him?
Hal has the ability to be a good person and chooses not to. He treats her very poorly, from insulting her writing in the start (which she politely ignores to preserve a good working relationship) to inviting her, very unprofessionally, to play in a non-existent bouncy house (where exactly would that bouncy house have been in his apartment?) How many male coworkers invite you to their homes to play in a bouncy house? Would that not be incredibly off-putting?
Hal can still be a good person if he actually chooses to better himself. Playing with something for a few weeks(?) and then giving up because you're not really interested in it isn't bettering yourself.
That said, it's also wrong for Megamind to try and force him to be Metro Man. Nobody should be forcing anybody into any role. It's a huge point of the movie. NO character in the movie should be forced to be who others want them to be.

I think my favorite experience with this movie was when I watched it with my mom, it was her first time seeing the film, but I had seen it already, and she already saw Hal for what he was, so when the power pill started to bounce around the place and then go into the pipe, with Hal in one of the video screens, she instantly saw what was about to happen and just turned to me going, "NO, NOOOO!!!", and all I could do was green evilly and reply Yes!

What I love about this movie is that it perfectly shows what happens if you give individuals with the "nice guy" syndrome authority and power. Hal - "nice guy" believes he deserves something/someone (Roxanne) because he is "nice" so when he didn't get it he immediately showed the sociopathic or narcissistic behavior underneath because he finally has the power to do so. Simple but so effective.

I thing I also really like about the movie and feel is often overlooked is: Megamind wasn't really romantically interested in Roxanne before they spent more time together. He didn't lust after her, probably because the thought of being loved as a person in general never even occured to him. Their relationship was platonic and business related and they were aquaintances at best. Only after they started to bond over the same interests (Metro Mans Death and Megaminds current Rulership) and spent more time together, he started to fall in love with her. It was such a natural progression, rarely seen in movies, let alone those made for children. It always feels rushed, love at first sight, despite them probably knowing next to nothing about the other person even at the end of the movie. Roxanne an Megamind on the other hand felt incredibly natural and believable. Another stark contrast to Hals relationship with Roxanne, because he didn't know anything about her AND wanted to rush into a relationship, while Megamind took the time to get to know her without having any expactions whatsoever.

Every detail of deep critisizing of this movie. Is so impact that I seen what you said. To me hall is a broken character who wanted one thing but ends up not obtaining it. But now that you said all those things I am starting to see the Character he is, he is a Villian whose desires are his purpsose he doesn't care about the bigger picture or what events would happen if he Made Action to it. He is a normal mindset bad guy, what it wants does, and if it's done it's over, then gluttons to what ever peeks its interrest and the cycle mindset continues.

It's ironic how some people in jail are not always pure evil they merely made bad decisions and were willing to raise a baby regardless of how he looked. And in some cases irl I've heard of how some people in jail are willing to kill those who harm children or animals which means they still have morals and still hate what is truly evil and can't be undone

I never realized how much I could relate on megaminds behalf with societal perception till I got older. My family depicted me as the weirdo and made it seem as a bad thing, I was picked on for being weird because I didn’t look a certain way, didn’t follow fashion trends and was a huge nerd obsessed with my own interest and nearly everywhere I went nobody understood me. Soon enough I adapted being “weird” into my own thing and was more free being myself unapologetically :v

There are two things I love most about this movie:
    1) Megamind isn't a typical villain. Despite growing up in a prison and shunned by his peers, all he wants is to fit in. He only kidnaps Roxanne because he likes to banter with her. He messes with Metro Man because he likes the game of them being rivals. His worst crimes after Metro Man dies is vandalism and theft. He's not used to being good, but he already has the heart of a hero.
    2) Hal/Tighten. In most stories characters of his trope are either geeky sidekicks or a comical relief loser. Until Megamind no one bothered to give them unbeatable powers and turn them into demigods.
And as a bonus, Metro Man himself is unique: he likes the attention and being there for people, but he doesn't like being the hero all the time. He was thrust into being a hero just like Megamind was forced to be a villain via society's expectations.

I always felt conflicted about Metro Man ditching being a hero to play music but I think you explained it great here, he was selfish but not evil. Some great thoughts about Hal too, like how he didn't even know what flowers Roxanne liked because ultimately he didn't care about her as a person. A very good video!

I love Megamind,it's one of my all time favorite Movies with alot of great Message and Themes,it's a perfect Story about Nature vs. Nutcher and that nobody makes us who we are or what we choose to be,that Faith and Destiny is something that we choose for ourselves,Metro Man choose to retired because he was tired of the same Cycle,Hal/Titan/Tighten choose to be Evil and a Villain not just because he was a Incsel but because that's who he is on the Inside Deep Down as a terrible and horrible Person,Roxanne could have choose anyone but she choose Megamind because she saw the good Person he is,and Megamind made alot of terrible choices and mistakes but in the end he choose to be a Good Person and a Hero because in Nature and who he is is someone that what's to be loved one of them being Minion and Roxanne, all in all 10 out of 10 this is a Masterpiece of a Movie that of 12 Years that deserves alot of love and attention, however that's about to change similar some is coming with Megamind in the Future,as long as it isn't a Cash Cow I will be Happy.

You summed up the contrast between Megamind and Hal perfectly. Megamind respected Roxanne's feelings when she said that she didn't want anything to do with him. Hal, by contrast, lashed out and tried to kill Roxanne when she wouldn't return his feelings. Ultimately, Megamind may have looked the part of a supervillain, but was a superhero, deep down. By contrast, Tighten may have looked the part of a superhero, but was a supervillain, deep down.

Megamind is an underrated movie. Metro Man was loved by the people due to having powers and doing the right things wasn't happy about his given destiny. Megamind was shunned and ridiculed by the people for being different and raised in prison but showed he has a heart and was willing to sacrifice for the greater good despite being a villain from the start. Al started off playing the nice guy but had dark intentions. He felt entitled and wanting to impress his crush but got rejected and showed his true colours after Megamind gave him powers.
It's a really good story of changing your fate and seeing and understanding the real person behind the public perception.

When Megamind came out i was just a kid without much of a critical eye for anything, but i knew a good movie when i saw one and vise versa, but whenever i brought up Megamind on the topic of movies i never had my opinions reflected.
For most it was like a rude reminder this movie existed and the worst part was i couldn't explain why i actually liked it beyond the villain becoming the hero cliche and the pacing which i still argue is near perfect.
But i never actually understood why it was great before i eventually dropped the whole movie from my mind like everyone else but over the past few years there have been some videos exploring this movie and it completely brought back my dormant imagination and every time my view is expanded further than it ever could have on my own, its literally more than 10 year old me could have ever asked for!
I just really appreciate the attention, time and effort put toward this video here and everywhere else, it has a bit more of an impact than you might think and quite the ego boost for 10 year old me lol (Perhaps with some residual effects leaking into the present)
