I would add anyone who feels music to their very core will understand how good these guys are. They are the very definition of "groove", they don't step on each other's musical toes, they're unselfish, they play in the pocket in an unbelievably tight way, they don't overplay, it's an almost perfect rendition of this song.
I'm a rock 'n roll guy and love Page, Beck, Gibbons, Lifeson, etc. but these guys are probably top shelf to anyone playing out there. Their craft, style, and technique is the ultimate. It literally doesn't get better than this.
Probably the most overlooked aspect of being a pro is what NOT to add. Note how all these guys are playing guitar, yet you can clearly hear the rhythm, bass line, accent notes in the rhythm section, it's all there and no one is stepping on the other. HUGE skill to be able to pull that off.
5 guitar players working together flawlessly and all being different enough style wise to accent each others playing without trying to upstage anyone. Awesome playing!
A great example of different styles and traditions being applied to one tune. Richard's Chet approach, Pat's jazz, Guthrie's Nashville style, Bryan's bluegrass and Tommy's Django-Travis hybrid. A total lesson for guitarists.
Thousands of hours of practice to become a collection of excellence. Must have watched this 100+ times, different styles, guitars just brilliant. Excellent production also 👍
I was eating late at night at a table by myself at Merlefest as the day's events were winding down, when Bryan Sutton and his little girl (about 4 or 5 at the time) sat down across from me. He is my favorite flatpicker. I kept repeating to myself inside my head "Just act normal. Just act normal." It took all my restraint to not start slobbering "Dude! You are so awesome! Oh Mighty King of All That Is Musical . . . ." A few years later I met Bryan again after a show and he was gracious enough to pose for a picture with me, both of us smiling. I keep that picture on the wall of my music room for inspiration. I love his playing.
As a guitar player of some 50 years experience, myself, I look at these guys...sometimes I get inspired and think of all the musical mountains I have yet to climb, and sometimes I realize that I am bumping up against the limits of my talent and know that I will never be able to play this well. Either exciting or depressing, depending on the day. Does anybody else think this way, wondering how far their talent will take them?
I used to ramble around in the psychological bushes too. Somehow, over time, it became quite OK not to be the BEST at anything. I think it had something to do with putting a stop to comparing myself to others. I am UNIQUE and so is everyone else... each of us in our own way. Sure, these 5 players are ridiculously talented and play wonderfully together. Don't forget that to reach that level and stay that good you need much more than talent... you need the dedication to PRACTISE anywhere from 6 to 8 HOURS.... EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE. I'm sure it wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to discover that each of them has a long list of things they can't do very well and an even longer list of things they can't do at all. Just like everybody else.
What a great post, but yeah, like rae0521 said, it’s okay to be just okay. It’s fun to try. Keep playing. I think God appreciates the effort. I know I do.
You also have to be willing to go outside your comfort zone. How much time do you spend learning guitar vs playing it? I think these guys have dedicated more hours to actually learning than we have sat down and played for enjoyment

+paulj0557 That's most definitely a Gibson, it's his '69, you can hear more about it on his Rig Rundown. The only thing is I think the 'Gibson' logo has been lost from the headstock to the sands of time, so it makes people think it's saying something it isn't. It's just the outline of the logo there. Obviously all the guys are amazing, but the camera op deserves a massive shout out for doing an incredible job of staying locked in on the action and really bringing the viewer into the moment.
The first time we went to see the Emmanuel Brothers in a small club in Sydney, maybe 30 people there, in 1985, I was amazed at the brilliance of talent, and also very impressed by the way the musicians gave each other space, listening to and appreciating what the others were doing. In this clip I see the same sort of attitude prevalent, and I just love the solid, unity of the rhythm that lets the wonderful solos safely fly out above it. I can’t wait to share it with my family.
5 pairs of extremely well coordinated digits. This marvelous tune was improvised to the extreme. Where would we ever get a chance to hear these 5 guitarists playing together, ever, except on UA-cam. We live in good times.
I do the same thing every time. I see one of these videos especially one with Tommy or Richard Smith and I tell myself don't click because you know what will happen. Then I click and two hours and twenty videos later there I am. This is an amazing congregation of talent. That Epi is smooth.

Watching a slew of Guthrie videos, he’s combining so many styles and masterfully blends them. . Smith Sounded like Chet/Reed influence too! And wow-Sutton pulled off some amazing unconventional flat pick tricks ya don’t hear from Blue grassers.
