There is two types of cross county skiing. People you tryed to imitate are using skate technique and they have skate skiis. You guys however have classic skiis and under your skis there is a gripper that makes skating a little bit diffucult. With classic skis you should use ski trail as it makes it so much easier :) I hope this makes any sense

Absolutely right! The lateral support from classic boots is also lacking, and makes it more difficult to apply power to your "power" ski, and of course, skate poles are longer since-theoretically-you're sliding faster, so need a longer lever.

There are two different country skiing methods: "traditional" and "modern", if you see the two sort of digged lanes on either left/right or on both sides of the track, that is where the easier "traditional" style of skiing is skied, you just put your left ski in the left divet and right ski in the right divet and push with your staves and follow the track like a train would. The other type "modern" is where you do the V type thing with first one leg and then the other. Its quite easy to learn, and becomes much easier after you learn it. You just point one leg to the direction you want to go, and push sideways with the other to get started and then you just glide forward with your leg muscles and staves, but you need to time your movements correctly in order to get enough momentum for the leg swap.

You are so positive, I love your videos! So happy for you that you made this happen, again a New experience! Every winter after the fist skiing day (or hour😂) I find new muscels in my body. You must use so many muscels which you don't usually use. All the best for you to your next new experience!

With parallel skies you should use the middle part of the ski to give you traction to get up hills. You kind of run and simultaneously jump in each step to force with your weight each ski to make contact to the snow with the middle part. When you have weight distributed to both legs then the middle part of the skies shouldn't really touch the snow or ice. The only part of the ski, which has traction, is in the middle. Both ends are as slippery as possible for sliding. Your skiing technique should maximize the use of traction and slippery parts depending on the situation.

For me it was the other way - started with cross country skiing and then downhill skiing and eventually snowboarding. That's because I live in Helsinki and cross country skiing is really available anywhere in the winter here, many times you can just put on the skis outside your door and there will be a path to follow to the made tracks.

And i must give Jenny some cred, it looked so natural when she was skiieng. She bent her knees and balanced on the skiies better. To get maximum enjoyment out of your next cross country skiing session, book an skiing instructor for one hour to teach you the basics. Also, your skis are for classic style that work best on the tracks. Enjoy your time in Lapland!

a lesson would work wonders, and as others have mentioned, there are 2 distinct techniques used, classic & skate. It's difficult to skate on classic equipment, and the same is true of classic on skate gear. Most skate since you don't need grip wax, and the knowledge of it's applications in different types of snow. As a former Level II coach, I'd recommend you begin by learning classic technique on "skin" skis, which are a more modern application than the traditional "waxless" fish scales. No ski is "waxless" however. you still wax for glide no matter which you choose. Skating is faster, but requires more muscle groups and works you harder.

Now when you learned how not be scared, you can learn to ski. A few things:
    1. You had classic skis with you
    2. You tried to skate with them
    3. You used them in the wrong part of the track (except Jenny found the right spot in the end).
Classic skis have a sticky part in the middle of the ski under your feet. That is used to give a grippy kick and move forward. You kick to the back and slide forward. Then you add the arms with poles that gives you more power. Classic skiing is done in those parellal tracks only.
Skating skis are stiffer and they are more springy. You skate exactly like with alpine skis. The skating poles are also longer than classical poles.
Here are some useful links to begin with =)
