- This is our last few days in Levi, Lapland in Finland!
Our adventure began in Levi, where we were greeted by stunning snowy slopes. The resort features over 40 kilometres of well-groomed ski runs, catering to everyone from beginners to advanced skiers. Me and Lauren were joined by her parents who we enjoyed racing down the slopes. The slopes of Levi Ski Resort have to be the most beautiful place I have ever skied.
The next day was dedicated to experiencing the heart of Finnish culture: the sauna. We travelled to Ylläs, where we entered a sauna that felt amazing after the cold air. The wood-panelled interior radiated welcoming heat, allowing me to escape the chill of the previous day. A unique Finnish tradition is the sauna followed by a plunge into icy waters. I braved the cold by jumping into a nearby lake, and while the shock was strong, the feeling of vitality that followed was incredible. Research shows that alternating between heat and cold can increase circulation and promote relaxation. The tranquil environment made it evident why saunas are such a cherished aspect of Finnish life.
Fuelled by our sauna experience, we next journeyed to Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus. The drive was beautiful, with snow-covered trees lining the road, transforming it into a winter postcard. Once in Rovaniemi, we visited Kotatieva Winter Leisure Park. There was something for everyone. We began with Ice skating, sliding dificultly along the frozen track through the trees. We then went for some sausages cooked on the open fire in the cold, but as our hair was staring to freeze up, we went inside to warm up before venturing out again to go sleding.
Finally, we went to see Santa Claus himself at the Santa Claus village. Stepping into this magical haven made me feel like a child again. The rustic wooden shops and twinkling lights set a joyful tone. In addition to meeting Santa, we explored a snow labyrinth. This maze created purely from snow was a delightful challenge. Lapland is a must-visit destination for anyone eager to embrace the joys of winter. The mix of adventure, cultural richness, and festive cheer captures the essence of a true winter wonderland.
