Scott you continue to amaze me with your simple cheap but effective ideas time after time after time.
It's a gear that would normally be used in conjunction with a typical follow focus system. It adds gear teeth to your lens so it can be connected to a knob with teeth that you can turn, turning the lens as well.
Great idea. I can see were you can use it for stills when using a zoom and you have a separate focus ring on a new lens. Saves time and keeps one from grabbing the wrong ring.
this is one of the most useful this you have ever made
Yes, this is true. You can also use a rubber band that is used to open jars, it works pretty well.
Hello Sir King Frugal! Love your videos, but mostly . . . love your cleverness! I thoroughly enjoy how your brain thinks - a TRUE problem-solver and DIYer! I'm a bit of a Nerdy/Techy/Crafty/Engineer-Type/Do-It-Yourselfer too, but the female version. I've been called a McGyver and laughed at and admired all at the same time. So when I see your stuff, it makes me smile and say that's one very clever person! I'm just starting out in both photography and videography myself, so I'm having a field day learning as much as I can in order to get the most bang for my buck. Just wanted you to know how much your resourcefulness and cleverness is enjoyed!!!
Thank you! You flatter me!
Wow I've been trying to find a follow focus idea that would work by pulling focus myself and this one worked best! Thank you so much! Keep up the amazing work!
Nice! There's also an alternative on Amazon called "follow focus or zoom control" that's basically a big zip tie with a stick and works like the jar opener but ten times better.
Some of the best innovations come from DIY people at home. Traditional follow focus systems are designed with focus pullers in mind, so they are not always ideal. But everyone is different, so what works for you may vary.
Only if you want the gear to travel with the lens. I've got several lenses of the same diameter and I just move the gear between them.
Interesting! Never thought of just using the over sized nature of the gear to assist with pulling focus. Your test shot looked great and I did not see any micro jitters. Simple and works well, smart!
mannnnnnnn you SCOUR ebay & the internet!!! YOU FIND every damn thing!! I LOVE IT! again, good job man!!!
That's how must good tools are. Once you use them it's hard to go back to anything less. But this UA-cam channel is called TheFrugalFilmaker. I think most viewers assume just from the channels name alone everything on here will be inexpensive DIY projects.
Cool idea. Might try out something similar with my cam on my DIY shoulder mount.
Another great tip! I've already made a variant of the Frugal Stabilizer and bought a cheap LCD viewfinder after watching your videos. Now I've bought a follow focus gear. I thought you were supposed to be saving people money! O.O
It all depends on the parts you use. For a few Dollars you might get a jar opener which is also a 'DIY Follow Focus'.
if you put a bigger rubber band around the focus gear, you can write the focus points onto the rubber band instead of using those clamps, and it will look alot better.
I dig the idea. I think I am going to give this system a try.
Simple but so much more effective than any other diy out there.
That little rig is a great tip, thank you for sharing
Really nice idea. I'll hold on to this video for when I get a DSLR that shoots video. I'm looking at the 650D and the prices should go down due to the 700D.
I'd recommend a ziptie over a rubber band, cinched tight, the "tail" will give you a handle/tab to push/pull on.
THIS is what I've been needing!!! Thank you!
That's genius! Thanks! And cheers from Poland
Not sure what you're refering too, but if you're talking about the C-47, That is what they are commonly called on pro movie sets and stuff by the art deprmt ect. I forget why that where called that.
Your sound was great.
Nice job, Scott!
Hs30-but yes. I have a jar opener but even that doesn't work well!
This is awesome... But what if you have a lens or non interchangeable focus/zoom camera where the focus ring is really small or even (with my camera) is underneath the flash hub (where the camera name is)?
Hmmm...not sure. If there is no room for the focus gear around the focus ring, this system obviously won't work. It may be modified to suit your situation, however. Tweak, tweak, tweak!
great idea
Nice! I wish you had done this before I blew cash on a follow focus rail system. :(
I wouldn't doubt that it had to do with naming stuff for government spending on military supplies.
You sir, are a genius
Critical focus became critical. ;-)
Good thing we [most of us] have opposable thumbs.
Great lens but damn that focus ring
Simply Brilliant Thanks!!
Very interesting. But what's the gear normally used for? The ebay link makes it sound like some commodity item in the film business.
Thanks
this is pretty cool!
Beautiful idea, thanks!
Has anyone tried this method on the canon nifty-fifty lens or know if the focus gear work good on this lens?
Hi. Do you have DIY zooming dslr remote? Thanks.
So if you have multiple lenses you have to buy multiple focus gears?
i think you might be referring to a SNORRICAM which he has already done
Ingeniously.
AWESOME!!!
you are awesome..
Amazing Thanks!
Thanks again
Hey Mr.Frugal, sorry I haven't commented in awhile... my account was hacked... anyway, I love this video! Can you recommend a screen recorder to use? I want to record gaming videos along with my regular videos, but I need a screen recorder. If so, can it be free? Thanks :) -Setg
I noticed you have that Sony Alpha NEX, How is it?! I was considering buying one but wasn't quite sure if it is worth the money.
Do you have a review on it or do you know someone who has done a very good in depth review on them?
ingenious
Cool !
Clothes pegs have a model number???
Immense.
I have a t2i 550D. And a Neewer Follow Focus CN-90f. I have a problem where the my follow focus bumps into the camera and I have to switch it the other side. I prefer to pull focus with my left hand. Will those rings work with a canon 50mm prime lens. Im sure Ill have to do the rubber band thing, Im already doing that with the rings it came with. Just wanted to check before I order those rings that extend out.
Ahh. I thought I heard it had to do with naming stuff in the budget or something. IDk
It was military lingo for a clothes pin.
Love your stuff
Siiickk!!!!
SUCH A GOOD IDEA!!!
you earned my subscription and like, sire, thanks a lot
Good luck doing this on a canon 50 mm 1.8
Needs a red ring anyways.
if he has ever used a follow focus before, he would never want to use anything other then a real, manufactured follow focus. I know I could never go back to using a diy solution to my focusing ever again.
Fantastic hack :-) and yes in this sense being a hack is a good thing :-)
awesome videos sir.
Fruitful maker.
$9.89 now!
smart
you are so amazing man, thanks for teaching me, you are my best teacher, please talk to me , and help me, am a new film maker,
What kind of lens
Minolta 50mm Rokkor-x f/1.7 with a Minolta (MD) to NEX (E-mount) adapter.
What kind of camera is that?
It's the Sony NEX 5n.
Except then you wouldn't be able to move the focus points around very easily.
toppp..
EDSONGUEIRREIRO BAHIA
