    When I was in EMT training the thing they stressed the most was scene safety. My instructors exact words "Your job is to help people. You can't do shit if you're dead"

      SenpaiAvalon yes! I was recently in an NREMT course and they always, ALWAYS elaborated on the “BSI SCENE SAFE?” For the skills test. I loved making all kinds of jokes about it lol. Scenario based world blow up “is my scene safe?”. As many jokes as I made, it really is true. You cannot help the helpless if you need help. Take life slow, easy and understand every moment... especially while on call.

    An old racers’ saying is “To finish first, you must first finish.” There’s no point in driving 110% if you’re just going to crash out and not get where you’re going. True for racers, true for law enforcement.

    Officer safety first. That’s why am a big fan of the move over law as long as it is feasible

    • @C8mon
      @C8mon 6 років тому +15

      Yeah we've had it where I live for a few years now and it didn't take people long to get used to it. Now when I see a cop pulled over I always see people making every effort to give them a full lane. Sometimes because of traffic it's not possible but usually in that case people slow right down. They made it a pretty hefty fine if you don't do it so even the aggressive drivers don't want to risk it lol.

    • @TierTalk
      @TierTalk 6 років тому +5

      Marc Grundfest It says if feasible. So if you can Move over you do. But if you can’t, because the traffic, it is what it is. Just slow down and be respectful of the officer

    • @pickles3128
      @pickles3128 6 років тому

      I had a Missouri highway patrolman get so over zealous with parking sideways behind the stopped vehicle (I assume to give them a barrier to protect from passing traffic) and he blocked off a good portion of the right lane. I actually had to speed up towards him to change lanes or slam the breaks and stop on the highway in order to avoid clipping him and his vehicle.

    • @TierTalk
      @TierTalk 6 років тому

      Pickles that’s dangerous as hell

      That's hilarious.. I don't know what to make of the theory that feasible is an objective concept.. You do think law should be objective right....
      Of course the law actually says, safe to do so.. Which basically means.. You should drive safely.. So we have a law that claims to second guess the operator of the vehicle on the question of safety.. Which is hilarious..
      Many CDL drivers can't afford a moving violation, and will, and have risked an unsafe lane change..
      Many safety Sallies who Propably are to old to drive, will move into the passing lane at 50 Mph.. Because they actually think it's safe..
      People will die.. Period.
      And the funny part... These idiotic laws were passed over one fatalitity..
      Most such accidents involve drugs, alcohol, or falling asleep at the wheel.. Not staying in lane.
      And of course to change lanes you need to check your blind spot, thus creating a very dangerous condition were you are no longer watching the officer.... Brilliant..
      Even by government standards that's stupid..
      This idiotic law will do nothing to improve safety and will decrease it.
      Standard virtue signaling bullshit.
      But no one cares as long as folks think it might work, reality is no match for the wishful thinking..
      And one last observation..
      Dim the God danm flashing lights when stopped.. Esp at night..
      Total loss of night vision is not fun while you are trying to decide if it's to dangerous to risk a ticket..

    **talk about swat unit, missing persons, svu, etc (from what you know )
    **whats your way on catching reckless drivers on the road? and how serious do you take reckless driving calls?
    **are there areas that you can not sit and watch traffic? private property? drive ways? (unless owner says its okay)
    **what are your thoughts on constables?
    **what are your favorite reality police shows to watch?
    **whats the worst call youve ever been on?
    **do you have any stories of random calls that youve come across that took a turn, or any calls that were a huge relief (getting a terrible call but turning out to be okay.) ?

    VIDEO IDEA!! As someone on the EMS side of things, I completely understand why they would not allow you to walk to the gourney on your own. An injury/damage to that degree can have spinal injuries so precautions and liability are established. My REQUEST is for you to speak about EMS, as someone on the other side of us first responders, and the relationship/role/importance that you have with them as a cop and the times you've been involved with them.
    I'm sure you have some crazy stories of times you've been first on-scene to clear the scene (scene safety) for a domestic dispute that resulted in a penetrating wound or a agitated aggressive patient or whatever. I would love to hear your side of EMS as a collective unit/team. Thank you for the videos over the years. Keep it up👍

      I live in a retiree area. You'd be surprised how often we'd hear that reason, and the sad thing is, it probably is the real reason the collesion happened. Retired LEO here.. Concerning persuits, they are extremely seductive, and addictive. As 401 said, you're no help unless you get to the scene.
      Once upon a shift, I got run off the road by a motorcycle. I figured I'd turn on him, then terminate the persuit as soon as he started getting smaller in the distance. Problem was, I soon realized I was gaining on him. Chased him 3-4 miles when he suddenly slowed down and stopped. Almost ran him down. The older Caprice disc brakes weren't impressive like the Shamu police cars. Anyway, I cuffed him and stuffed him. We conversed as we went to booking. Told him if he ever fled again to please coast to a stop. Told him he came very close to getting run down because he stopped so abruptly. He replied that he hadn't planned on stopping, but his bike wasn't running right and noticed I was quickly gaining on him, or he wouldn't have stopped. Stated he had concerns one or the other of us was going to get killed and he was real concerned it was going to be him. We had a good chat, and he thanked me for not being ill or abusive to him. Told him I always tried to be professional unless a suspect gave me a good reason not to be. Hey, I didn't even have to chase him through a briar patch or anything. Ref. your motorcycle persuit, you should have known better. If you'd caught him, the risk very likely wasn't worth the arrest.
      Always tried to drive and anticipate whatever the motoring public could do to mess me up and was prepared to react when they did.
      Be safe, Brother.

    In my department when an officer was involved in a crash if he/she was at fault they got a traffic ticket for the violation and had to go to court. On top of that a sergeant “investigated” the accident for a violation of department policy and the officer would get written up. This always struck me as unofficial double jeopardy but that’s how we did things.

    Thanks awesome video. As a civilian driver, the part about driving that scares me the most is left turns onto a busy two-lane road. You're absolutely right about speed.
    When I was younger, twenties, I liked to speed. Now you can't get me to go above 70 in the left hand lane. It's one of those things the experience and seeing bad wreaks on the road cure you of.
    I do believe getting into a bad accident, that you survive, will sure induce safe driving behavior like nothing else unfortunately, due to never wanting to have another one, ever. Unfortunately I say this from my own experience.
    I'm willing to bet, you are probably one of the safest drivers in Georgia, Geico or whoever your insurance company is, loves you.
    Again thanks for the video, God bless, have a great weekend.

      healthygirl, I’ve been driving and talking to a cell phone for 20 years. If it has been okay in the past i kinda feel unnecessary to stop doing it now. I’ve had over dozen accidents but never anything related to a cell phone. I guess it’s good that some of us recognizes the risks even if some of us don’t. Oh, and we have lots of snow too in Finland and we use winter tires. Cheers.

    • @healthygirl
      @healthygirl 6 років тому +3

      Jaybee0507, I think with me, I never did feel comfortable using my cellphone while driving so I didn't do that much. After I got hit last year, I think the person was on a cell phone and that's why he didn't notice we stopped in front of him. It did happen fast so I don't know for sure. I definitely haven't touched my phone while driving since though. I have winter tires too and trust me, now that I have had winter tires on my car for the past few years, I will never go without them in the winter! It makes such a big difference! :)

    When I served (conscripted service) as an airport firefighter I was in one of the rear passenger seats of one of the fire engines when the rear tire on my side blew. Two axeled fire engine. All 18 tons (metric) rocked up almost to the tipping point and then sank down. We were luckily just going at a snails pace at the time, as we were just going back from a faulse alarm. Had we been going full speed on the runway or in traffic outside the airport we definitely would have rolled. That got us all thinking for while. Sometimes stuff happens that are completely out of your control.

    My first wreck on patrol was a bad one. I was responding to an armed robbery I came up to an intersection running about 95 and instead of clearing it I only slowed down to about 80. That’s when a van ran the red and it was full the only thing I could do to avoid hitting it was getting on the brakes and turning. When I did that I went nose first into the ditch and flipped the crown Vic end over end 4 times. I walked away with only a few cuts and bruises. I unfortunately had to learn the hard way why you always clear the intersection regardless of if you have the green or not.

      Police instigating a high speed chase, particularly through neighborhoods or thick traffic, is dangerous. Putting a speeder in jail is not worth endangering the public. The same reason why they don't discharge their weapons if the intended target has innocent people behind them.

    I have had similar story, where I was stuck by a SUV while riding my Bicycle. I felt fine and was under the assumption I could just walk to the ambulance, but the medic had to force hold me down (I was only 13, so he only needed one hand on my chest) the bigger issue is they do not know what all could be wrong so it is best that you go on a stretcher than try walking with a broken neck or other unseen injury.

    Can you explain why you're supposed to pull over to the right during a traffic stop, and not the left shoulder? Wouldn't it be safer for both the officer and driver on the left side since you would be further away from traffic?

      How would you be farther away from traffic on the left versus right?

    • @DaltonColbyMerritt
      @DaltonColbyMerritt 6 років тому +5

      If there's a left and right shoulder, you still go right because A. The left shoulder is usually more narrow than the right. AND B. Faster traffic travels in the left lane(s) so if there's an accident, it'll me more catastrophic.

    • @captaincannabis3321
      @captaincannabis3321 6 років тому

      Jane Doe Assuming both shoulders are large enough to move the vehicle completely out of the roadway. On the right shoulder the officer would be standing right next to oncoming traffic, whereas on the left shoulder the vehicle would be between him and traffic. So if i car where to swerve over onto the shoulder, it would swipe the side of stationary vehicle instead of running down the officer.

    • @captaincannabis3321
      @captaincannabis3321 6 років тому

      Dalton Merritt i get that but under normal conditions the left lane would only be travelling marginally faster, and like i said in my previous comment, even if the difference in speeds were significant, an 80 mph collision into the side or back of the stationary vehicle would still be less severe than hitting the officer at 60 mph.

    Had a cop pull up behind me as I was trying to visit my stepdad in the hospital following a heart attack in the evening. I was going a whopping 5 under in the right lane (speed limit was 45) looking for the right street. It was obvious I was unfamiliar with the area and planned on turning soon. The cop was tailgating me so closely that I could not see his cruiser's headlights behind me and didn't even know he was there. I finally found the street I needed to turn at and I did brake a little suddenly, but he somehow managed not to rear end me. Dude was so pissed off he pulled me over and screamed at me to drive faster and to not brake that quickly as I almost "made him crash his car." I wanted to remind him that he's supposed to be in control of his own vehicle, it would have been entirely his fault and maybe what he really needed was a ticket for following too closely, but fortunately, even if I had been stupid enough he stormed off and sped away before I could even open my mouth. Never even asked for my license or insurance!

      I had a similar situation, I was driving on the main street of my small town, and this officer was going the speed limit, and out of no where slowed down to about half the speed limit. Admittedly, I should have slowed down faster than I did, but I got close a little close to him for a couple seconds before he sped back up. Then about 1/4 mile down the road he does the same thing, but proceeded to brake check me. I react reasonably, and I dont even get remotely close to him. Then he pulls me over and yells (screams at the top of his lungs) at me for 30 seconds about how dangerous and stupid it is to ride his bumper for half a mile etc. He goes on about how his car has performance brakes and I have no business being that close to him etc. Then he tells me he has more important things to do than to write morons traffic tickets and leaves, without even looking at my license etc.

    I totaled two cruisers, and damaged three more. The three that I damaged were all deer hits, so they were "freebies." The first cruiser I totaled happened when I avoided another vehicle who lost contoll in an ice covered curve, and was in my lane. I faded right, got caught in a culvert, and ended up in a cemetery. I destroyed sixteen tombstones, and one granite monument, which landed across my hood, and the top of my cruiser; hell of a ride!! Second totalled cruiser was, again, due to ice. I was checking some hunting cabins, looking for a guy that had escaped the night before. I was trying to make it up a steep "seasonal highway" when I lost traction, and couldn't stop my slide backwards down the road. I actually listed, "planet earth" as other vehicle/object that I collided with, which my Supervisor corrected. Oh well, no one was hurt, I didn't get any time off, or bad-boy letters in my file, that's all that really counts.
