Up to a point @_Ben4810, but we can of course only legislate locally, not in the other countries that you've mentioned. It's not so much the goal of net zero that's wrong as the way our various governments are trying to achieve it. In Wales the headline figures of 10% tree cover etc are attracting attention, but it's probably a fair bit more nuanced in reality. In the West we now rely heavily on China (for example) to manufacture goods on our behalf, so we can't complain when they use energy to do so, nor shirk our own responsibility to de-carbonise our domestic energy consumption, given that the burden has been lightened by offshoring so much production of goods.

the UK produces 1% of global CO2 Emissions, Wales is probably less than 10% of that total. So they're unaware of law of unintended consequences. You'll end up importing the consumption requirements because of the shortfall of supply. Then you'll be importing food from countries that don't care and produced with higher carbon footprints.

Covid rules for the sake of being different As Harry raised, places like the valleys and the Brecons there is very little scope for the land to be used for anything other than Grazing sheep and goats. to me the approach is totally wrong (this applies to the EU too). The government needs to say, you need to halve your emissions by 2035, you can achieve that via low emission tractors, via growing carbon neutral crops or whatever, rather than an arbitrary you must plant trees on 10% of your land. We need to reduce emissions from argrictulre, but it should be a target, not dictating the method too.
Add the two together and you have my family, my father was one of two brothers that inherited a farm near Wrexham he joined the Welsh Guard and went to France with the BEF and was part of the evacuation in 1940. Went back over as part of the D-day landings. My uncle ran the market garden farm, helping to feed the UK in those dark times. Meanwhile some of my aunts were nurses in UK hospitals and one served in Egypt, I have a photo of her and two other army nurses have autographs signed by General Eisenhower on the steps of Shepheard's Hotel Cairo. Another aunt managed a stone quarry helping to patch up worn torn UK. My mother worked in a factory making parts for infantry tanks. This is just one family doing their bit for the UK, only it's all now in vain as the sacrifice is being thrown away.

i am a forklift driver for Yara, and its been very interesting watching when trucks come in and out since i started in august. how it went very quiet on the run up to xmas, we were about 30 trucks a day average in august september, then first week back after xmas, 50 trucks a day that first week then second week, lucky if 10 trucks a day. it interesting to watch that side and then see a video on where the fertiliser goes and how the weather ties in. playing farming sim 22 and previous games is fun but doesnt show what happens in the real world lol.

You should see the Fens! Still looks like a lake, and the flood defences have burst in several places meaning lots of farmland has to be recovered! That is all sugar beet and wheat
Well done Harry for another great video. I used to farm 600 acres with rented land, I reduced to just over 300 to get rid of awkward rabbit infested valleys that were mostly flint stone and thin soil. In 2010 I gave up the rented ground, converted a granary into 4 bedrooms bringing my rooms up to ten, all en-suite, for 39 guests (first 6 opened in 2004) and in 2007 I opened a campsite. I pay tax now, no more cash flow problems but there is still a lot of work for my wife and me. Thanks Harry for the channel.
I was looking at buying a smallholding in Wales and I was surprised to see how many former commercial farmhouses with their outbuildings were being stripped of the majority of land for re-forestation! It seems there are more grants from the Welsh government to get rid of farming in place of planting trees!?

The problem with going fully Green is how many people will have to find another way of living or just falling out from the workforce. Governments are now more or less forced to implement the Green policy to do regulations that have been passed earlier. However much needs to be desired on these regulations cause they seem to be done by people who have no idea how life outside the office works.

Hi Harry, great video! Really interesting development with using nitrogen fixing bacteria seed dressing. Great to see some Red Kite crusing over your fields in the video too. It has been an unbelievably wet winter in the East of Ireland. And many arable farmers are struggling to prepare their land for sowing spring wheat and spring barley.
I'm surprised anbody is still following through on the climate stuff. Surely someone in power has realised all those international treaties and agreements with Russia and Chine were a complete joke to them from the start? "Yes, handicap your industries and cripple your agriculture, we will do same, we pinky promise!"
SFI also allows for carbon credits Harry, up to £15000 for a two thousand acre arable farm, who plant trees and wild flowers. Theres a new stock on the new york stock exchange whereas you can invest in SFIs. Large companies and farmers are all for SFI as along with the government subsides, if you plant trees you can harvest them after 25 years. But for a small to medium farmer working ona profit margin of 5-10 % its devastating. Offcourse all the large producers are all for the SFI s as corporate entities will emerge to buy up farmland and set it aside with the added benefit like ASDA and set aside carbon credits for their delivery fleet from the land Asda purchases, in the end cornering the food market.
There is an interesting interview with Sir Julian Rose of Hardwick Estate near Reading with UKColumn, conducted by Charles Malet and published earlier this month (April) where they discuss the insane government interference in farming. Klaus Schwab and King Charles are mentioned.

wheat prices in the states are a lot higher $280 usd per ton but dropping this year due to overproduction, no one is protesting it happens all the time, all crops price flucuations due to weather, demand etc, here the gov does provide some price supports to pay you to stop you from growing to control pricing..dont know how that works in the UK
Adding 'healthy bacteria' to seeds works at domestic level too, Harry. I buy a packet of 'healthy bacteria' and 'healthy fungi' every other year and add a smidgen into all the garden centre compost I use to germinate vegetable seeds (trays and module trays). The effect of that is that every time I transplant out rows of vegetables, bacteria and fungi are introduced into the soil where they grow (back garden and allotment). Obviously, if you can make reams and reams of compost at home/on the farm or source animal manure, you can use that as sources of micro-organisms (leaf litter from a wood is also a great source of fertility) too. I've always noticed that my seed germination is excellent when adding the micro-organisms into the garden centre compost, but I've never done a formal experiment. My soil's fertility is also improving year on year, which makes a mockery of all the doomsday scenario fear porn that 'we won't be able to grow food soon in the UK!'

Harry I love both your channels, and as somebody who studied agriculture and worked in the industry I am usually pro farmers, but the issue I have at the moment is they are sat on huge assets (whether inherited or purchased) and are complaining because they can’t find a way to make them lucrative, and they feel the governments conditions on handouts restrict their freedom. No other industry has it as good. If somebody inherited a small family business but a societal shift caused their product to drop in value to the point where the business was no longer profitable then it would be ridiculous for them to protest and blame the government. They would have to adapt, or face extinction. I don’t understand why farmers feel so entitled in this way! Any farmer who owns their land can easily fix their predicament by selling and taking their sizeable sum elsewhere to enjoy or put into something else where they feel they can turn a profit. Tenant farmers I admit have it difficult and their hands are tied, but I don’t see that as dramatically different to any other property renter who are all facing tough times. Farmers are some of the most asset rich people in the country, and they’re protesting that they have it bad during a cost of living crisis. It is really not a good look. Please feel free to respond as if I’ve got this all wrong then I’m open to having my mind changed but I do find it hard to muster any sympathy at the moment.

At this point I’m planning to source organic wheat berries because I’m concerned about Glyphosate sprayed on the wheat as a desiccant, close to harvest time. I hear it’s a common practice here in Canada because of the short growing season and in the UK because of rainy weather. What say you? Sometimes I worry that governments are so focused on saving us from climate change, they forget people need to eat and farms feed cities! You had a nice crop of wheat in that first field. There are some good healthy looking crops around me in Ludgershall and I spotted a field of osr with its flower stems well above the plants. Not bad for the 1st week of March. (That was near Amesbury). There is a great deal of flooding on the lower lying river valleys, but they are mainly permanent pasture.

You mention that you are a pure arable farming and a mono culture farm. I'm curious why that is? Is growing a diverse range of crops not preferable? The 10% for woodland and the 10% for wildlife/nature can be combined as native species woodland is a haven for wildlife. The woodland can be managed naturally by allowing the Eurasian Bison to graze them, area controlled by electronic radio collars and fences, they are a hardy species and were once native. Despite their size they do less ground damage than cattle or pigs and love brambles and gorse. They're used to maintain Ancient Woodland in Kent and Sussex.
I don’t think you can feed many people with 20% woodland and novelty cattle. The real problem is to many cows and not enough forest It’s to many people. The human race can’t keep expanding and consuming resources .
What the hell wrong with these politicians ? Do we want to import are meat from other countries ? What will that cost the environment? Leave those farmers alone ! You’ve got free draining in the Cotswolds. Wheats elsewhere on heavy land are looking yellow and sick due to the persistent wet & waterlogging
You should see the Fens! Still looks like a lake, and the flood defences have burst in several places meaning lots of farmland has to be recovered! That is all sugar beet and wheat

Well done Harry for another great video. I used to farm 600 acres with rented land, I reduced to just over 300 to get rid of awkward rabbit infested valleys that were mostly flint stone and thin soil. In 2010 I gave up the rented ground, converted a granary into 4 bedrooms bringing my rooms up to ten, all en-suite, for 39 guests (first 6 opened in 2004) and in 2007 I opened a campsite. I pay tax now, no more cash flow problems but there is still a lot of work for my wife and me. Thanks Harry for the channel.

I was looking at buying a smallholding in Wales and I was surprised to see how many former commercial farmhouses with their outbuildings were being stripped of the majority of land for re-forestation! It seems there are more grants from the Welsh government to get rid of farming in place of planting trees!?

What happens if the Welsh refuse, and go on with their regular plans ? Does the Senedd fine them all ? Do th Welsh farmers then sue the government for depriving them of their livelihood ?
The problem with going fully Green is how many people will have to find another way of living or just falling out from the workforce. Governments are now more or less forced to implement the Green policy to do regulations that have been passed earlier. However much needs to be desired on these regulations cause they seem to be done by people who have no idea how life outside the office works.
Always an interesting view of what is going on with our agriculture.

Hi Harry, great video! Really interesting development with using nitrogen fixing bacteria seed dressing. Great to see some Red Kite crusing over your fields in the video too. It has been an unbelievably wet winter in the East of Ireland. And many arable farmers are struggling to prepare their land for sowing spring wheat and spring barley.
I'm surprised anbody is still following through on the climate stuff. Surely someone in power has realised all those international treaties and agreements with Russia and Chine were a complete joke to them from the start? "Yes, handicap your industries and cripple your agriculture, we will do same, we pinky promise!"
SFI also allows for carbon credits Harry, up to £15000 for a two thousand acre arable farm, who plant trees and wild flowers. Theres a new stock on the new york stock exchange whereas you can invest in SFIs. Large companies and farmers are all for SFI as along with the government subsides, if you plant trees you can harvest them after 25 years. But for a small to medium farmer working ona profit margin of 5-10 % its devastating. Offcourse all the large producers are all for the SFI s as corporate entities will emerge to buy up farmland and set it aside with the added benefit like ASDA and set aside carbon credits for their delivery fleet from the land Asda purchases, in the end cornering the food market.
There is an interesting interview with Sir Julian Rose of Hardwick Estate near Reading with UKColumn, conducted by Charles Malet and published earlier this month (April) where they discuss the insane government interference in farming. Klaus Schwab and King Charles are mentioned.

wheat prices in the states are a lot higher $280 usd per ton but dropping this year due to overproduction, no one is protesting it happens all the time, all crops price flucuations due to weather, demand etc, here the gov does provide some price supports to pay you to stop you from growing to control pricing..dont know how that works in the UK

Adding 'healthy bacteria' to seeds works at domestic level too, Harry. I buy a packet of 'healthy bacteria' and 'healthy fungi' every other year and add a smidgen into all the garden centre compost I use to germinate vegetable seeds (trays and module trays). The effect of that is that every time I transplant out rows of vegetables, bacteria and fungi are introduced into the soil where they grow (back garden and allotment). Obviously, if you can make reams and reams of compost at home/on the farm or source animal manure, you can use that as sources of micro-organisms (leaf litter from a wood is also a great source of fertility) too.
I've always noticed that my seed germination is excellent when adding the micro-organisms into the garden centre compost, but I've never done a formal experiment. My soil's fertility is also improving year on year, which makes a mockery of all the doomsday scenario fear porn that 'we won't be able to grow food soon in the UK!'

It’s price at the end of the day. Home grown products are too expensive compared to cheaper imports.

Harry I love both your channels, and as somebody who studied agriculture and worked in the industry I am usually pro farmers, but the issue I have at the moment is they are sat on huge assets (whether inherited or purchased) and are complaining because they can’t find a way to make them lucrative, and they feel the governments conditions on handouts restrict their freedom.
No other industry has it as good. If somebody inherited a small family business but a societal shift caused their product to drop in value to the point where the business was no longer profitable then it would be ridiculous for them to protest and blame the government. They would have to adapt, or face extinction. I don’t understand why farmers feel so entitled in this way! Any farmer who owns their land can easily fix their predicament by selling and taking their sizeable sum elsewhere to enjoy or put into something else where they feel they can turn a profit. Tenant farmers I admit have it difficult and their hands are tied, but I don’t see that as dramatically different to any other property renter who are all facing tough times. Farmers are some of the most asset rich people in the country, and they’re protesting that they have it bad during a cost of living crisis. It is really not a good look. Please feel free to respond as if I’ve got this all wrong then I’m open to having my mind changed but I do find it hard to muster any sympathy at the moment.

The '23 surplus will bolster the loss predicted for 24 and then there will none left. But governments in their wisdom will allow imports from countries with far less stringent eco-welfare laws and call themselves green because they have pushed the issues out-of-sight-out-of-mind. They think we the voters are stupid, however, we are not and we see their duplicity.
I enjoyed this! My head is all full of wheat these days, I’m planning to get a home stone mill (Mockmill) for my bread making. At this point I’m planning to source organic wheat berries because I’m concerned about Glyphosate sprayed on the wheat as a desiccant, close to harvest time. I hear it’s a common practice here in Canada because of the short growing season and in the UK because of rainy weather. What say you? Sometimes I worry that governments are so focused on saving us from climate change, they forget people need to eat and farms feed cities! It’s about as stupid as dropping a nuclear bomb on a city, to take care of the rat problem.

You had a nice crop of wheat in that first field. There are some good healthy looking crops around me in Ludgershall and I spotted a field of osr with its flower stems well above the plants. Not bad for the 1st week of March. (That was near Amesbury).
There is a great deal of flooding on the lower lying river valleys, but they are mainly permanent pasture.

The basic farm payment (subsidy) last year for that many acres would be £15,800.00, no business rates, or fuel duty. One band reduction in council tax on house, 2 if noise, smells, nearby buildings reduce value. No inheritance tax to pay. £300 million subsidy per year just for the bfp. 18000 fulltime farmers 20,000 partime and 12000 employees 1.8% of welsh employment. Average farm income 20/21 £34,500 67% from subsidy payments.Welsh "Cash strapped" local authorities own 38,000 acres worth £266 million plus farmhouses and buildings. Welsh agriculture is 0.6 % of UK gdp.
Good morning Harry , I've been a fan of your farming and car videos for some time. I find it all fascinating. I have a question if you don't mind. You mention that you are a pure arable farming and a mono culture farm. I'm curious why that is? Is growing a diverse range of crops not preferable? Or is it better to prioritise reliability of crop over diversity of crops.

When will the majority of farmers in Scotland ever get any detail on the proposals for Scottish farming? Certainly not until after the general election.
The 10% for woodland and the 10% for wildlife/nature can be combined as native species woodland is a haven for wildlife. The woodland can be managed naturally by allowing the Eurasian Bison to graze them, area controlled by electronic radio collars and fences, they are a hardy species and were once native. Despite their size they do less ground damage than cattle or pigs and love brambles and gorse. They're used to maintain Ancient Woodland in Kent and Sussex.

It’s to many people. The human race can’t keep expanding and consuming resources .
What the hell wrong with these politicians ? Do we want to import are meat from other countries ? What will that cost the environment? Leave those farmers alone ! We have enough of politicians interfering and making bad and in reversible decisions over the years . If the Welsh government want something to do then concentrate and what’s happening in the Steel industry in there country and leave the farmers to get on with what they have done for generations.
