      Those in high office are controlled by those with names like Rothchild and Rockefeller. Their vast wealth calls the tune in all departments. If they say there are too many people on the planet, it is not long before we see action for population reduction, where ever it can be achieved. Farming is fairly essential when it comes to the necessities of human life, and when there is a world push for less food production ,and more trees , flowers and birdseed, where people food once grew, should it not raise concern? I have nothing against them, but not at the expense of food production. The people will not eat Schwabs bugs, we want good Welsh and West Country lamb, British beef that is affordable, and sorry Farmers but we want our Butchers back. Super market joints look as if they have been in a wood chipper. Covered in splinters of bone, and mutilated flesh. Chickens that have had their giblets removed for our convenience. We know they have kept them for other productions. Farmers should know that the people have been kicked around and forced to comply since WW2. It is time we all stopped complying, and withdrew our support from those who take brown envelopes to keep globalist boots on our necks.

      20-40%+ subsidy grants on machinery?

      Developed countries' agriculture cannot compete because workers in developed countries are expensive and so has been replaced by expensive machinery. The EU and N America use high import tariffs which makes food from outside expensive and use that money to pay huge subsidies to farmers. Britain basically has to decide whether to keep tariffs on imports or let more cheap foreign food in and replace some of the farmland with forest/grass etc. From what Harry said, Wales seems to be going towards the latter but can't afford to pay for it, and who knows what Scotland are doing but you can be sure that in both cases England will end up paying the bill.

    Always informative Harry. We live in the Lincolnshire Wolds and we have had a nightmare due to the rain this year. Yes the land is saturated but direct drilling has in our and some of our farming friends opinion, made the water run off the land worse. By direct drilling and not ploughing the crust from the previous years, the land has become compacted. Therefore whilst the water under the ground continues to rise the rain coming down is running off ever quicker. Our grass field next to our house has had so much water, soil and seed deposited we have to wonder just how much crop has been lost around us. Your summary on direct drilling is spot on. You might get a couple of years of direct drilling in, but you may have to plough and drill the third year to break the crust and to turn the soil over to allow it to breath, save the soil run off and possibly increase yield.

    I'm not a farmer, but our best friends are. Now into their seventies, they run a traditional mixed beef and arable business with strict rotation on the fields, allowing some to lie fallow each year. They spend a lot of time on drainage maintenance as some of the soils have heavy clay beneath. Although they have tried drilling, they have noted that many farms are having problems with compaction as ever larger tractors work the land and, as others have said here, it is not being broken up by traditional ploughing as in the past, reducing absorption and keeping the water on the surface. They have had good success with modified grain, which grows shorter, with a bigger head whilst at the same time being less vulnerable to wind damage.

      Yeah, compaction is an issue and makes the soil waterlog more in winter and dry out more in summer. I've heard that growing the right cover crops with deep roots that can dig down through the hard soil can help alleviate this problem.

    • @Edtopp192
      @Edtopp192 3 місяці тому

      Yes this is one solution to helping reduce soil compaction. The only trouble is these multispecies swards are not very popular with intensive farmers trying to produce as much silage as possible as they will not yield like more chemical grasses and can be harder to ensile for silage. Farms like this grow a lot of Italian rey and short term leys which will last 4-5 year max before they are plowed and changed. Being a young farmer myself I think the use of multispecies swards needs to be pushed especially on grazing livestock farms as there is a lot of research which shows increased daily live weight gains in finishing stock and improved soil quality which in turn helps with carbon sequestration into the soil reducing carbon in the atmosphere. Using cover crops on arable ground through the winter is also important to soil health. If you wanted you could go on for hours about soil improvement and crops 😂.

I remember growing up in the 80s and 90s and the sheer amount of insects in the countryside compared to now, and general sense of biodiversity. Were we any less food productive? I believe the tree planting scheme comes from "The Pontbren Project" which seems to have been a success. It's easily found on google but here's a some snippet from it:
    "When the tree planting began only 1.5% of the Pontbren land was woodland, mostly neglected riparian woodland and small areas of larch, but 10 years later 120,000 new trees and shrubs have been planted, 16.5 km of hedges have been created or restored and nearly 5% of the Pontbren land is now woodland. This is a major achievement in just 10 years, with no loss of agricultural productivity."
    Also they've been planting trees for shelterbeds, of course doing it on your land it would be a detriment but in windswept uplands farms where it's not arable farming it provides shelter for animals and improves the land.
