I'm from the north so for me it is too hot for too much of the year here. Overall pretty slow and boring depending on what demographic you are in (age, married/single, kids/no kids, etc). Air travel here is a real struggle compared to a major metro where you can often fly direct for $100 - $250 round-trip. Gainesville is behind the times when it comes to tech and IT. Cellular is spotty with a lot of dead zones and internet fiber etc is poor compared to other better-wired cities which are now building out city-wide 10 GB fiber networks.

You're comparing rural vs urban. I'm from the north NYC and PHL and left 8 years ago to Jax suburbs. I would never go back. The pollution, traffic, inflation is horrible up north. Heat is not factor bc were always indoors; same if you lived up north with cold. and if someone is sweating over electric bill rates then you have no business living on your own.

I lived there for 28 years. Moved north to be close to family but now want to move back. I miss my friends and I really didnt appreciate the place when I was working there. Now I'm retired and have all my time to myself it may be the right time to move back.

W'ell haven't seen you for a while. Why I left Gainesville, Florida? 🤔 Two reasons: 1. Separation & 2. Retirement Federal Government Employment! I'm a LEO combined Federal & State with 13 years Army National Guard service. Gainesville? Uncle Sam brought me there! PROBLEMS THERE NONE! I loved it there's absolutely NO problems issues with it, I'm just from a well known family with ancestral beginnings reason why I returned home to Puerto Rico! Alachua County is the BEST that state has to offer PERIOD ☝🏾

Having lived in the Gainesville area for ~ 25 years, from Windsor to Newberry, my opinion is Alachua county is the best area in North Central Florida, It's the most modern compared to other small cities along I75. It is expensive tax wise and the roads are "Alachua" which is an old native Seminole word for bad road but otherwise a nice place to live. Most of the new construction is several miles West of Gainesville and many have Clay electric, they are who you want. 11 acres 3000 sq ft under air, large pool, hot tub, Tesla EV ect and our winter bill ~ $170 and ~$220 in summer plus they mail you a check around $75/year because they are a co-op. I've been proud to call this area home this century but our future move will be motivated by 1) we're getting old. 2) it's getting crowded. 3) 95-ish degrees everyday for 5 months. I appreciate your video's Donavan. :)

I want to move to Gainesville from Arizona. Diehard Gators fan. The weather in Arizona, hotter and very dry, just doesn’t cut it for me. Arizona is getting way too expensive and it’s just not where I want to be. I could easily transfer just about anywhere for work. Have two young children and would definitely like to have more, Floridas education system is much better than Arizonas.

We left Gainesville because prices are to high. GRU,COX sucks. Schools the violence in the middle schools and high schools. Also crime is high and it is all over town! We bought a house in Levy county taxes are lower, schools are safer and you get more bang for your buck. Now we do have to go back in Gainesville for doctors appointment and some shopping but love to come back to the country living. Gainesville has changed over the years like every city has. We have a co-op central Florida electric and they are less expensive and they offer fiber internet that is way lower than cox or any other internet company.

I hear all smack talk about Louisiana but I pay $55 a year taxes. Paid $12K for my dump 5+ years ago. 70380 it's not remote and there's a 7 story hospital and a trade school you don't have to own a car here. Everything you need is on the island.

I hate it here. I moved here because of Shands. Shands medical care used to be great. Not so anymore. I now go to Mayo and MD Anderson in Jacksonivlle. There is no shopping here, I usually shop in Jacksonivlle or Orlando. If your not a Gator fan, there is nothing here to do but movie theaters. It is boring here. And I am looking forward to leaving here for good.

Pardon me if I ask what could be regarded as naïve question, but as I am definitely looking at Alachua City or Newberry for example as an area to afford a home, (I am going to sell my condo in south Florida and want to live much closer to family in Gainesville) would these areas outside of central Gainesville that I mention be similarly subject to the same higher property taxes and be under the Clay Utilities you refer to?

    • @LivinginGainesvilleFlorida

Gainesville is church belt of the south, remember that. Very religious. Less so then other smaller neighboring towns due to progresive people of the Univerity. But still church on every corner. They have a Unitarian church of Gaineville which is very gey friendly.
I would say go to NYC for truly gay open minded people.
