@@meowmeow5909 you can buy pointe shoes anywhere but if you dance for a company... especially a reputable ballet company, they get theirs specifically made to tailor each dancer.
@@rumblefish9 Nope. Untrue. Dancers, especially principal & soloists working for reputable companies, may choose a brand & type & size of shoe, but the shoe is not custom made to their specific foot measurements & shape & preferances - if they were, ballerinas would not need to break, cut, tie, trim, scuff & powder their shoes before they can wear them - but they do, because the shoes are not custom made to theit preferances.
meow meow Sorry but you’re uninformed about this subject, I’m a dancer & all pointe shoes are hand made. Bloch, Capezio, Russian Pointes & Freed’s to name a few major brands. Freed of London does custom fittings & all manufactures of pointe shoes make a variety of off-the-rack shapes for the studio level dancers, even some professionals can get away with these fittings of P.S. with their own modifications. However, you have the option to have a pointe shoe made by a specific maker at Freed & they will tailor fit a Freed P.S. to the changes you order. The reason a dancer would want this is ill fitting point shoes causes problems & it makes dancing much easier. The list of problems can range from having extra satin cut and sewn to the lower the profile, have a 3/4 shank instead of full, reinforce the toe box, tailoring the heels if the dancer constantly has issues with a “disappearing heel” when on pointe, these & many other changes can be made so the P.S. is specific to the dancer’s needs. It’s expensive however if it’s your livelihood would you rather spend your down time sewing & modifying shoes everyday or have them ready to go?

g C some actually do, there are many productions where the ballerina will have a red shoe or a blue one. It just matters on the production but it is usually suppose to match the skin color.
Well...it depend on what kind of ballet company it is, nowadays the companies are more diverse and do all the thing from contemporary to neoclassical and straight up classical. Classical isn’t about matching your skin shade, it’s about matching the tights, the costume and the character you’re trying to represent, that’s why pink are sometimes more inclined to princess looks like Aurora(tho most ballet dancers stick to a more salmon toned pointe lol), neoclassical and contemporary on the other hand are more free and according to the choreographer’s choice the dancers will not have tights on their figurine, which makes more sense for them to pancake the shoes.
Cee’baby no it’s mostly because ballet was such a white dominated field for so long they didn’t think that it was “necessary” to make them. But as more and more darker skinned women started to become a part of the ballet world, we needed more inclusion and representation for darker skinned ballerinas. It is technically a white privilege since it’s probably easier to find lighter colored shoes which sucks, but that’s not why they didn’t start making them sooner...
@@0urlady0fsorr0wss they didn't make them sooner because of white privilege. Do you know what it's like to be a black ballerina? It's incredibly isolating to feel like you stick out like a sore thumb
Amita Nathan you literally just disproved your point, the shoes were not made until recently because black people weren’t encouraged to dance and were not widely accepted in the ballet community until recently, but now that they are, there are more shoes readily available to match their skin tones. Is it prejudice and racist to try and exclude people of color in ballet? Of course, but this isn’t a “white privilege issue”, it’s a racist issue. White privilege isn’t the reason these shoes weren’t made sooner, it’s the racists who discouraged them from participating.
Wait. I did not know ballet shoes were meant to blend in with the skin of the dancer. I always assumed white, cream, pink were just standard. Glad these dancers are finally getting something for just them
For those who prefer to comment without watching the video the purpose of the skin toned shoes is to extend the line of the leg when tights are not worn. Explanation starts at the 1:29 mark. You’re welcome.
@Jack park They kind of do cover why it never mattered as much before; they wore matching tights. And those two shades of brown we saw in the video doesn't match every brown+black person to a T either, but they sure as hell blend better with their skintone. In the same way a pale skin dancer would still rock a white pair of ballerina shoes fat better than the brown.
It’s nice that they mentioned Asians too but this was well overdue Edit: I never said any type of Asian I just meant Asian overall I am aware there are Asian ballerinas. I am aware that there are allot of shades of Asian . I’m just saying it’s nice that they included Asians . I appreciate that they have finally made different colors of shoes.
It does look sleeker and more aesthetically pleasing when the ballet shoes are more fitted to the dancers skin tone. It makes the lines look leaner and more fluid.
Come on people are you paying attention to the video? If you watched the video it answered the questions. It's not the ballerinas it's the company's that are changing. The ballerinas and the shoe company's had to change to comply. Times have changed and evolved. This is not the I remember when days. Those days are gone. This is the present and the future. This is sad. It really hits hard when small things like this were never issues that I had to deal with. I’m glad they’re moving forward and being more inclusive with ballet shoes.
I agree with I dislike nude lipstick being called nude as if this beige shade was "the standard". There's also hardly white or very pale foundation or eyebrow makeup for red hair. There's women who searched many places and couldn't find foundation light enough for them. If anything needs to match skin the most it's foundation.

At the time it never crossed my mind how privileged I was to be able to buy my very treasured first (and only) pair of pointe shoes in the correct colour for my skin but now as an adult, I can see it. Finally! Now everyone gets the lovely sheen of new satin! Foundation sponged shoes never look as pristine and pretty as their pink counterparts. This makes me so happy for ballet girls! 😍💖
Sanja Trifunovic Nope. They were made when only white women were allowed to be ballerinas. Most women of color, other than rarities like Maria Tallchief, were discouraged from classical ballet and pushed into modern dance - hence, why there are more famous modern dancers of color. Look it up!
Linda Watson Obviously white people don’t have pure white skin - they have very light pinkish beige skin. This is the color the shoes and tights match.
For you guys who don't understand: Black ballerinas sometimes paint their shoes to be darker so they don't stand out so badly. Having a shoe that blends in better with your skin tone probably does a LOT for confidence. It's just like having a band aid that blends in or having a nude bra that matches. That stuff is small, unnoticeable, under the clothes. It might seem small to someone who has never once had to think about how the world isn't catered to their skin color. Instead of criticizing this for being gimmicky or unnecessary, understand where these people are coming from. YOU have the privilege to write it off as stupid but do the world a favor and consider something other than yourself for a moment.

I can sympathize with what they put their feet through having worn combat boots for weeks on end traversing many miles through every type of terrain and weather. These women have my respect and I am in awe of how fit and tough they are.
I'm so happy that manufactures are changing with the times with the dancers. It's a big step but also a much-needed step to be taken as the industry changes. Love it so much!

I'm latina and I find it so... extra, I've rarely seen any performance that NEEDS skin matching pointes (needless to say, never participated in one either)
How does watching the video again prove if I'm a latina or not? I don't get why some companies ditch tights anyways, the pointes hurt your foot less, just saying
ღ Ashimari ღ I’m not in ballet (I just dance) but I would imagine it would make performing a little more enjoyable, it’s like wearing tights that are three shades lighter and you look you have ashy legs rather than having leggings that match you😭. I feel like because there hasn’t been darker skin toned pointe shoes it’s become normalized to have a lighter shoe hence you thinking it’s gimmicky rather than inclusion.🤷🏽♀️
It said in the video that in the past most dance companies wore tights, which meant that the color of the shoe only needed to match the tights, not the dancer's skin. Now that they're going bare-legged rather than wearing tights it's necessary to have a wider variety of colors for their shoes so they match the skin tone of the dancer.
The tights that we used to wear made it so that it all matched and now we don’t use tights (some companies don’t use tights) so we have to have matching shoes (sometimes) in my opinion I love the darker pointe shoes I think they are beautiful and I’m happy for darker skin toned ballerinas
@@gardenofroses197 most companies aren't going bare legged though. American ballet theatre, new york city ballet none of the biggest companies go bare legged, but maybe they meant just regular studios are going bare legged
Well ballet historically is a typical white Caucasian people dance, that's why ballet shoes are made with the typical light pink hue. The problem of matching dark skin hasn't presented itself until relatively recently.
They're never happy unless they're 'modernising' everything. It's a very old traditional dance form, why can't they just leave it as it is? Because it's a traditionally white art, they feel they can change it up. Try changing traditional Indian forms of dance and see where that gets you. Called a 'cultural appropriator', that's where.

@@MonkeymagicsMum Uhm... If you look around UA-cam, you can see it's everywhere not just in dance but it's present in other art forms as well. Isn't that what art is about though? Change, expression, mixing two seemingly different things and making something new out of it? You know, being creative? Have you ever been?
@@chanelf1758 I guess if you're looking for 'racism' you'll find it. The modernising I was referring to was the ditching of tights that Mochi first referred to. Dancers always wore tights for various reasons. It was an integral part of the 'uniform'. But somehow it's always acceptable to change TRADITIONALLY 'white' art forms (like it or not, it was TRADITIONALLY white) but conversely non-white art forms are seen as somehow untouchable and not in need of change. Oh and by the way, I think you meant 'you're'; you + are = you're.
These pointe shoes look beautiful on the dancers! I love when items can be inclusive. Be it pointe shoes, foundation, band-aids, etc. It's wild it took so long. From what I've seen, there's so much work dancers have to do to modify the pointe shoes any way. Having them in the correct color would be awesome.
It's humble of her to say it's "just a little something" - pointe shoes are ballerina's most important tool right after their own bodies. It was high time that shoemakers included them.
as a white dancer, I have always wondered why there were not many people of colour in the field. For example, at our dance school, there would probably be a few hundred dancers, but only around 10-15 people of colour. Most of them are in the younger grades, and in my class, there are none. Thank you for opening my eyes to what some dancers are dealing with. Hopefully coloured ballet shoes will eventually become much more common.
Coco Nutty hate to say it but probably because dance is expensive and white people got money from other generations but as we know black people where slaves and had no money so white people got a head start

Well they all have to be specialy made to fit the specific dancer. If it were done with a machine then only certain people could to pointe
@@ameliagl04 lmao what?? Ballet shoes aren't custom made, they're not handmade so they can be custom fit to each person prior to construction, wtf? you know there's millions of ballerinas worldwide and working dancers go through multiple pairs a day,how could the industry possibly work if every shoe was custom tailored? What an ignorany thing to say
Ballerinas choose their shoes and then the ballerinas themselves break, cut & fit their shoe to their feet, not the store making them 🙄
@@meowmeow5909 you can buy pointe shoes anywhere but if you dance for a company... especially a reputable ballet company, they get theirs specifically made to tailor each dancer.

They usually don't. They're usually pink, and people do not have pink skin
Same
This is so much more appealing for the eye I wonder why they didn’t introduce them long ago
Kathi S it’s because of white privilege
Cee’baby no it’s mostly because ballet was such a white dominated field for so long they didn’t think that it was “necessary” to make them. But as more and more darker skinned women started to become a part of the ballet world, we needed more inclusion and representation for darker skinned ballerinas. It is technically a white privilege since it’s probably easier to find lighter colored shoes which sucks, but that’s not why they didn’t start making them sooner...
Black people were not encouraged to dance until recently.

For those who prefer to comment without watching the video the purpose of the skin toned shoes is to extend the line of the leg when tights are not worn. Explanation starts at the 1:29 mark. You’re welcome.
@Jack park
They kind of do cover why it never mattered as much before; they wore matching tights.
And those two shades of brown we saw in the video doesn't match every brown+black person to a T either, but they sure as hell blend better with their skintone. In the same way a pale skin dancer would still rock a white pair of ballerina shoes fat better than the brown.

For you guys who don't understand: Black ballerinas sometimes paint their shoes to be darker so they don't stand out so badly. I actually didn’t know they were meant to look like the dancers skin tone. It’s actually really cool, but really sad it’s only just happening.
We gotta start somewhere. We can't change the past but we can create the future. And this video is proof of that.
Why would you ever ditch tights? They made everything look more elegant... Somehow

Sometimes small things make a profound change! I was moved when she said they don't feel belonged but having a darker ballet shoe comforts them, gives them that extra support...
This is beautiful and definitely long overdue ! I can watch ballerinas perform and practice all day - so amazing ! I am in awe and have so much respect for their art and athleticism 💕💕
Ballet Black is one of my favorite companies and I am so glad that you chose to feature them for this video!
💗 Ballet Black
Ariel M. I love it too! I also love CMDC, its ran by Homer Bryant and he made a new ballet called Hiplet (hip hop-ballet en pointe) and its very diverse there.

Misty: Excuse you. You mean a pirouette??
These look beautiful, it’s great to see more inclusion for darker skinned women in the ballet industry.
I’m a ballerina I’m going on pointe next year but I’m getting the baby pinks I honestly love the darker ones more like dark red, dark purple, and brown

for people who confused why ballet shoes needs to match the skin tone
moonchild yeah it looks super weird!
@@AnHeC nah you missed the reason
@@AnHeC and if the costume does not include tights or as they said in the video "more modern companies opt for bare legs" then it should be the colour of your skin. So that the lines look good.
@@AnHeC some do require skin tone shoes. Learn your info before trying to add everyone in it
@@beessfls2219 this guy is a troll and racist so just ignore him. He clearly didn't watch the video well. All of his talking points are addressed and yet he complains. Save your life's energy.
I have no idea how all of these ballet videos ended up on my feed...but im hooked now! This is awesome!
4:14 The beautiful chocolate color of the shoes enhances her beautiful form 💕
This is awesome! There is definitely a need for more diversity. I wish that ballet would be more accepting of different body types as well.
I LOVE this. Every company should diversify their shoe color like this.
So glad the ballet world is becoming more diverse! The shoes are gorgeous btw ☺️
Bro the fact that I won’t have to spray paint my shoes anymore (which kinda ruins them tbh) is game changing
The colour and glossiness is so satisfying and beautiful🥹🥹🥹
I've been watching ballet videos for about the past month or so. One thing I began to notice was how their pointe shoes are always that nude color and never anything else.
I always wondered why and this video cleared that up for me. Having that extended line makes perfect sense especially for the type of dancing they do. Not only did I learn something new but I really love how companies are extended the skin color range for pointe shoes. Good on them 👍
the way the shoes match the darker skin tone is literally gorgeous to look at for some reason
The brown pointe shoes are so pretty 😍
Those practice sessions are quite a sight; she makes her grace look almost casual. Amazing.
I’m not even black but oh my!!! this really made happy💖
SANDRA DURAN DURAN same
SANDRA DURAN DURAN same! ❤
I have nothing against the new colors of these pointe shoes but i actually think the pink pointe shoes compliment their skin tone and i know that its about the lines but i really like the pink pointe shoes on them ❤️🖤
🎼brown skin girl, the skin just like pearls, best thing in the world, never trade you for anybody else🎼
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The bronze is so beautiful 😍 it’s shine gives it more tome range too I love it
About damn time!!! Black girl magic!!! 👸🏾💙🤗
now we need a black, female president for the USA. That would be the best IMO.
@@easytoslip ikr 👍🏾
Look at their toned muscles, amazing
As a ballerina I'm here to say, yes they NEED to match your skin tone it should look as if it's your own foot. (Mostly just for performance)
I'm so excited!!I'll be getting a pair of these next year!
I’m also getting a pair next month but I’m kinda nervous 😥
What an exciting time! I will never forget mt first pair. Back then we were still using lambs wool for protection.
Good luck!!
