Regular wave testing in the new University of Southampton towing tank

- The view from the towing carriage of a 0.7m high wave being generated in the towing tank, which is 138m long, 6m wide and 3.5m deep. Waves are generated using a 12 paddle, hinge type wavemaker.
Imagine hearing this in the middle of the night, we're you got lost at the sea, with big waves 🌊
terrifying
hell nah
Nah I'm gonna die just hearing the sound
Terrifying at night 😖
S-sharks?!!😣
The sound it makes as it's starting up is so terrifying oh my gosh and what the hell is in that water don't they clean it that's crazy
The stuff on the surface is to assist in the the measurement of the motion of the water. There are likely similar particles suspended under the surface, too.
@@sundriedturd Actually the water was dirty then. Filtration system has been sorted since and it is now crystal clear!
The white stuff on the surface is white water
lol some people commenting thinking that this is some kind of public pool to swim. This is in a university, it’s for a test and probably, if you ever go there, you will not be able to move because the waves will not allow it and you will drown.
We should test your theory then.
Who's gonna jump in for science?
me
@@annekedebruyn7797 We have had people in the tank

A moment of silence for those who think this is a swimming pool 🙏
But I still dont know what it is
@@evaprebil4396 It's for testing various wave heights and their effects.
It could be a pool
@@PlayingwithPawz if ur brave enough
I would swim in there but I still have more to live
This water looks and sounds Haunted as Hell 😂😂 Imagine being lost and stubble in there just to hear the start of this water ... Spooked 😳 🏃♂️🏃♂️😂
Sounds like hydraulic motors being used to create hydraulic waves. I would love to play with that while I was designing a hull that reduced pitch, yaw and roll in those waves. It would take a lot of time just watching the models move in the sea.
These are actually electric motors.
Imagine hearing that in the dark
ضض
😂 Omg!
That's what I'm doing at the moment LMAO
This is eerie
Why?
It’s the lighting
Imagine the wave breaks free and flooded the whole universe and your moms credit card💀
That color of the water is beautiful it’s my favorite color ! How deep is that pool ?
3.5 m
@@bertrandmalas6389 that’s deep
Looks fun idk how people think that’s scary
same, maybe they have thalassaphobia
It sounds like someone screaming and creating huge waves.
one smol birb more like a danger alam
Impressive
That seems so fun!
for everyone saying theyd swim in it, dont, its 3.5 meters deep and the waves could easily bash your skull
11feet and some change? oh yeah you can definitely drown in that
Calm before the storm
There's something wrong ... the lead wave is breaking, so the wave length is too long for the depth of the pool at the period the wave is being made and the energy that is being put into the wave by the wave maker is too high ... which we can't see. To have the lead wave dump energy so the following waves can progress is of little value than to show how not to do it.. :-) Why does this video have 3.5 million views? Some kind of joke?
This is actually a run to test the limits of the wavemaker. That particular run was performed at the limit wave height for that given frequency. If you reduce the wave height a little bit, it's all good. And no the wave length is not too long, it is actually the opposite...
@@bertrandmalas6389 Got it.. the run was to max the possible wave height for a given period (frequency) well, yes if all the waves are breaking, then the wave height is too high.. or the wavemaker is putting in too much energy at this frequency like the stroke length.. assuming it's a physical wall moving back and forth, or a wedge moving up and down, or a vacuum system lifting the water and dropping it... whatever :-) But, only the lead wave was breaking as it disappears and shows up in the back of the wave-train. The wave group is moving 1/2 the speed of an individual wave. Sooooo... why was the "lead" wave breaking? We see several do that before they show up again at the back. .... and why does this video have 3.5 million views?
@@MFL92028 it was breaking because thr wave machine was forcing the water to move at startup with the same intensity as during the run, it takes a little while for the wave to generate into a smooth pattern therefore the first few waves "bunch up" creating a high amplitude and therefore breaks in the first few before leveling out into it's true frequency. And why do you ask about viewcount? it's youtube, people like to see different things.
@@harrier331 Thanks for the reply... sorry I just saw it..UA-cam has an old email address for me.. must try and change that. Nope, your explanation is not really correct.. the lead waves are dumping energy because there is too much energy in the wave stream.. the generator"s stroke is too high for that period wave, and the depth of the water. I think my comment about 3.5 million views is very reasonable... other videos on UA-cam are lucky to have 100,000 views and their titles are very interesting like "Amazing laboratory wave break at Large wave flume" much more interesting than "Regular wave testing at the U of Southhampton towing tank" .. Yet there are 4,400,000 Views!!! ... and only 156 comments.
@@harrier331 Nope... that's not the reason. First waves do not "bunch up" they were made with too much energy for the wavelength, period, and depth of the tank .. although the tank depth is not a factor in this case as the wavelength looks longer than 1/2 the dank depth. I'm also right about the views .... it doesn't make sense. Other wave-making videos on YouYube have much catchier titles like: "Amazing laboratory wave break at Large wave flume" and they have only 101,000 views. A year ago, I was remarking about the 3.5 million views .. now the video has 4,400,000 Million !!! .. are you having a contest at the university to get the world record for watching regular waves do nothing, with no model ship or shore ... well, congratz
That’s a cool waves

Just me or does that look like big waves?
0.70 m wave height
Satisfying
I will go there to see a rough wave with the waves going straight throughit is going through easily
how deep is that
