Don’t know if it’s just your review or if the show was like that, but the non-hyper focus on Velma being a lesbian and just sprinkling it throughout as a by the way thing actually made me enjoy the story more than I thought i would

I fully agree, too bad though the only thing people take from this movie from what I heard is focusing on Velma being gay and saying it focuses on it, when it’s literally just a casual thing.

Sometimes I enjoy it when a piece of media makes that the focus..... sometimes though it's nice to be more subtle about it and merely have it as an "oh by the way this just happened" thing too.

      attention, spoilers!
I really have always liked the idea of where someone from the Mystery Incorporated team was interested in the fate of their defeated opponents (I drew fanarts where Fred or Shaggy visits the convicts Trudy Lowe, Phylidia Flanders, Susie Smythe, Natasha, Ruthie Banz, Heather Lane in jail). Therefore, the idea of the mutual interest between a member of the Scooby team and his/her former opponent was interesting to me.
If Velma's feelings for Coco are sincere, then I have questions about the ending. In the beginning, I thought that Velma's reaction to Coco was caused by some kind of mind control technology used by Coco to subdue Velma. I thought that Coco had somehow mentally subdued Velma so that she could convince the rest of the Mystery Inc members to release Coco (which was part of her escape plan). I suspected that everything that was happening was part of her plan to free herself. But then (Spoiler!) It turned out that Coco was acting under the compulsion of the warden, who forced Coco to set traps for Mystery Inc. taking her cat hostage. That is, if I understood everything correctly, Coco herself did not want to escape from prison, take revenge on the heroes or fight with them; she did all this under compulsion from the warden, who wanted to create a worthy opponent for his beloved heroes. Then a crazy warden, obsessed with the idea of providing Mystery Inc. with opponents with whom they could fight, releases all their enemies from prison, and the released prisoners are taken to lawlessness in the city. And then Coco, I don't quite understand for what reasons, decided to go against her former allies and arm Mystery Inc. with her own technologies, so that they could defeat their liberated enemies. I kept suspecting that there was some secret intention behind Coco's unselfishness; that she might have equipped the costumes she gave to Mystery Inc with some kind of traps or mind-bending devices in order to paralyze former enemies or bend them to her will at the crucial moment. But it didn't happen, Coco really gave her former opponents her costumes with super powers, and in the end she personally joined the battle on the side of the main heroes in her lightning-shooting armor.
That is, Coco completely switched to the conventional side of good, endowed Mystery Inc with her technologies, personally went against her former allies, but in the end, if I understood the ending correctly, Coco was disarmed and sent back to prison, from which she was released for investigation. That is, she seems to have improved, but in fact she was not rewarded in any way for such a significant and selfless help to the heroes. They did not release her from prison and did not even improve her conditions of detention, sending her to the same prison where, after the events of the cartoon, all the prisoners, without exception, are her personal enemies (since she helped catch them after escaping). For me, this is a very cruel and gloomy ending. And none of the heroes began to intercede for Coco, to ask for her release or to replace her imprisonment with a suspended sentence, although she seemed to help them selflessly and went against her former allies for this. I would still like her to be rewarded in some way for switching to the "light side", for example, by replacing her imprisonment with a suspended sentence. But in the end, even Velma, who seems to be fascinated by Coco, does not try to help her in any way, but only says that it's a pity that they were not on the same side initially. For me, this is a very sad result, and Velma does not even promise Coco that she will visit her or be interested in her life. This is just my subjective opinion, but it seems to me that if the creators of the cartoon seriously promoted Velma and Coco's peering, I would like Velma to be somehow more concerned about Coco's fate at the end of the cartoon.

The animation in the movie is so delightfully smooth and fluid, I love it! Coco looks so expressive in her movements and the facial expressions are detailed and fun to watch. I like how referential the story was. I think the only thing I would change is the Daphne subplot, I feel like sometimes writers feel like they have to have her justify herself in a meta way and when no one in the gang actually thinks it.

    • @Scoobytopia

It's definitely odd that Daphne is almost always the one that gets singled out like this as if she needs re-invention. It's arguable that she has the least defined traits in the original series, but we've redefined those traits so many times at this point only for nothing to stick while Fred has clearly had his character very defined retroactively since. All we need to do is just stick to one of those traits/personality additions instead of acting like we need to make new ones like this every single time.

It felt like it kicked off with Guess Who itself being a sequel-reboot of The New Scooby-Doo Movies and this more classic art style, and now continued here. The opening alone being a new version of the theme complete with visual references like walking by Elias Kingston coming out an open door makes it so fun to catch all the little nods from the start.

Any instalment that has Fred acting unhinged is automatically a favourite for me. Seriously, this movie was great in so many ways. Tons of nostalgia and smart callbacks, Coco is a great new addition while she helps the everything together.
Velma is adorable. This sweet, dorky energy is what I want in all gay depictions of her going forward. I dunno who was out here making Daphne so funny and why she’s so thicc this time around, but I was reacting to her the way Velma was to Coco.
I’ve voiced my annoyance with Scooby and Shaggy before but they were actually very good in this. They were funny and weren’t too over the top, actually balancing the rest of the gang’s dramatics out at times. IMO, a very under-utilised dynamic is when the comedic relief characters have to get everyone else’s shit together. Scooby in particular was so done with everyone the entire movie and that was amazing.

Can't say I agree about Daphne "being the leader all along," I may not have seen every movie or show in the franchise, but Daphne very often freaks out under pressure (especially in regards to her looks and accessories), and usually is known for asking others for advice or just following along with what Fred wants to do. But maybe i'm biased because Daph has always been my least favorite.
And I do feel like there's a chance Coco could make a comeback considering the overall positive reception of the character that has resulted in the movie getting a lot more attention than most other recent Direct-To-DVD movies, not to mention a character with such a major connection to the lore would be wasted if relegated to a one-time appearance. Though on a side note, I think Trevor was wasted by having him just be a throw-away disguise for a surfer dude and I think he could've had a cute friendship with the gang had he been a real person.

    • @Scoobytopia
      @Scoobytopia  2 роки тому +20

I definitely agree that what they did with Daphne was an odd choice, coming from someone that actually has her as my favorite character. She's arguably the character with the least notable traits in the original which has resulted in her being reinvented several times over the years, and it doesn't really seem like a movie that needed to do that again. I don't hate it, but it's clearly not working with something that was ever established until this particular movie as far as her being a leader. They've done the same with Fred, but his reinvention has mostly stayed consistent in the years since, so I don't know why the same just can't be done with Daphne.
I also agree about Trevor, I thought his friendship with the gang eventually was cute and it's a shame he just sort of skates away. If Coco ever comes back, I would love to see him return as well.

@@Scoobytopia I feel like if they want to cement her leadership qualities, there should be a situation where Fred's captured early on and Daph has to step up as leader in order to rescue him (while showing scenes of Fred trying to breaking his way out and not succeeding).
And for Trevor's return, I guess they could pull a double reversal and reveal that the surfer dude was also just a disguise done to mess with Scooby and Shaggy.

I really believe that the feelings of Coco and Velma were sincere and apparently, at least to some extent mutual (although Velma showed clearly more pronounced interest than Coco, but it was probably harder for her, due to her pride and ambition, than a more open Velma, to express sympathy). I also understand that for the old Scooby Doo series, which, apparently, the creators of this part were inspired by, there was a certain simplification of the narrative, and therefore the rapid transition of the characters from one mood to another, the absence of periods of doubt and hesitation in the relationship between the characters here can be considered a genre convention. But still, if we move away from the scenario shown and dream, I would really like to see in more detail the moments where the heroes of Mystery Inc. and Coco, initially forced to cooperate due to circumstances, would overcome mutual distrust caused by their previous confrontation. Still, Coco initially felt almost contempt for the heroes, and I would like to see in more detail how she changed her opinion about them in general and about Velma in particular, how she and Velma, maybe, in the course of the investigation, some common interests, character traits would be found in the dialogues, thereby destroying the existing detachment or hostility between the heroines due to previous events. At the moment of the rescue of Coco's cat, Sebastian, it was possible to add a moment so that the cat would not just be tied up, but was in danger, and the members of Mystery Inc. they would have risked themselves to save him, thereby Koao would have had a chance to respect them, realizing that they do not just solve mysteries, but help people.
And then this situation could be mirrored, when, for example, the released prisoners would not just run away to smash the city, but the whole crowd would go to take revenge on the heroes. Theoretically, it was even possible to develop this moment, that in the beginning Coco would have been with these prisoners, and they would have accepted her as their own. But then she would have heard that her former associates wanted not just to escape, but to take revenge on Mystery Inc. And then, perhaps, a turning point would have occurred in Coco's soul: she would have realized, as a result of an internal struggle, that she could not allow her former colleagues to harm Velma and her friends. And then, taking advantage of her newfound freedom, she would take an electric suit. As a result, when the heroes were in danger, Coco would appear in her battle suit and shoot lightning bolts at the attackers, just to save Velma and her friends. Then Coco's decision to support the heroes could look more organic in the sense that she does not just suddenly stand on the side of order and helps to suppress the riot, but she goes against former comrades-in-arms to save people who are personally dear to her. Then we can add a moment that Coco realizes that her former allies, whom she helped in the past, are evil and cruel people who seek only personal enrichment, power, strength and are ready to abandon, substitute each other for their own salvation, while the heroes of Mystery Inc, on the contrary, are ready to risk themselves for the sake of saving a wounded enemy.
And this could serve as the main factor in Coco's moral restructuring; that from now on she thinks not only about herself, but also about protecting people dear to her, and for this she is even ready to sacrifice personal interests. And at the end, when the heroes would have gotten out of danger, there could have been a moment when the heroes would have been afraid for a second that Coco was now using her combat suit to paralyze them with lightning and escape, but she takes off her combat gloves, showing the members of Mystery Inc that after all she had experienced together, she would not be with they fight and she completely entrusts her fate to them. And further, I don't even know what would be the best thing to do. Or the heroes could let Coco go without hindering her escape, thereby acknowledging that they also no longer consider her bad and do not want to fight her. Or she would have surrendered to the authorities, but her sentence would have been commuted for her help, or transferred to a correctional institution with better conditions, and the finale would have been a scene where the characters would visit Coco and she would communicate with them, showing that she was doing relatively well. Or Coco would have been replaced with a suspended sentence so that she could continue to participate in the adventures of the heroes.
all of the above are just my ideas on how the plot could develop, but still my main wish is that there would be more moments where not only Velma and Coco's mutual attraction was demonstrated, but there were also moments where the heroines would care about each other's fate and they are ready to help each other.

This movie was a ton of fun (not my absolute fav, but I enjoyed it). I like the nostalgic vibe of them referencing their old villains constantly, the fun songs, the silly animation, and Velma having a crush on Coco was cute, though occasionally cringey, but that might've been intentional, everyone can be a bit cringe with a crush lmao.
However, the Daphne plotline made me roll my eyes. We've done the whole "what's Daphne's point?" time and again, it's no longer relevant. For decades now Daphne has had a purpose in the group and her own personality, it just depends on the era/series. In the OG she was lackluster, but they've improved her tenfold. She's my favorite character and I just want her to have fun storylines, not ones that have already been done (and been done in really good and satisfying ways, like the live action one in 2002).
I recently found your channel and have been binging you vids, specifically the movie ones, and they're great! Well, I watched it and first of all I'd like to say that I don't care about all the controversies related to Velma and Coco Diablo, I rate the film as a film! And moving on to the movie, I think it's very nice. Visually (if you like the Guess Who style) very nice, the humor is charming, the fan service is nice, especially in the finale, the characters are great as usual and the story is quite cool, but why didn't they add Scooby-Dooby-Doo at the end!? oh no, I won't forgive it, although their final laugh was a bit demonic for them. But overall, a very nice movie, 7/10 from me, it's not my favorite Scooby-Doo movie, but I'd love to come back to it.

i just wanna say as a lifelong scooby fan (still young tho just about to be 25) - i am so happy to see this video and to see these kind and accepting comments. so much hate is coming from older generations and im not sorry - you can't claim scooby for yourself. media evolves and classic characters like these belong to the people and to see a queer reflection of my beloved favorite cartoon is so important and special to me. i am so glad these new incarnations are finally finding their footing with the humor and art style and im so excited for the future of this franchise if it keeps it up ❤️

loved this movie in general honestly, obviously I loved Velma and Coco (she’s always been a lesbian in my heart but I’m so happy to see it confirmed). however the ending of the movie was completely insane haha. i was watching it with friends and it felt like a fever dream- they could have cut the last ten or so minutes and it would have been perfect, rather than cramming what felt like a bunch of random cut jokes in to pad it out presumably?? Still loved it overall though, just felt like a super weird choice.

Spoiler! I really s like the idea of where someone from the Mystery Inc team was interested in the fate of their defeated opponents (I drew fanarts where Fred or Shaggy visits the convicts Trudy Lowe, Phylidia Flanders, Susie Smythe, Natasha, Ruthie Banz, Heather Lane in jail).

I love this movie. I know it's early to say, but this is probably gonna end up in my top 10, maybe even top 5, Scooby movies (it's the first one I've seen in a while that I rewatched almost immediately). The Guess Who animation style is cartoony and expressive while the background is reminiscent of a canvas painting.
The musical score fits the art style and story line. As for the actual music, the remix of the theme song is absolutely brilliant. One aspect I thought was missing from multiple modern Scooby movies was the incorporation of the theme song (which we saw from the 90s-2000s moves). The musical montage when the gang and Trevor fix the Mystery Machine is so catchy it stays stuck in my head. Even Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz" as the chase scene song in the library fit well, as the song exudes this feeling of theatrical creepiness that the Scooby-Doo franchise is known to exhibit as well. One of my favorite aspects of the movie is its tendency to embrace the quiet moments. On more than one occasion, dialogue takes a backseat and allows for ambient noises to fill up a scene, creating a balanced audio experience.
As for the story lines, I do enjoy them. Mostly. Fred's decline in sanity as he craves a good mystery is especially funny and drives his desire. Daphne's confusion about her role in the gang has been explored before, but I felt that it was done properly for the movie. Velma's love story with Coco Diablo is just so darn cute. Any time those two were on screen together, I could not help but smile and root for them. For a same gendered romantic story in a kid's movie, I felt this was done admirably. As for Shaggy and Scooby, it's more of the same. Which is fine, but I would like to see more from them. Food shouldn't be the only driving force for them because at this point I feel like it's becoming a tired trope with them. Scooby's beef with Esteban (Coco's cat) was funny but suggested something deeper emotionally for Scooby.
The mystery overall was very solid. The suspects were laid out perfectly. Of course, Coco Diablo is the prime suspect with her talents as a costume designer. Trevor is obviously the red herring simply because of his avant-garde and macabre nature. I suspected Warden Collins from the beginning, but everything leading up to his reveal was laid out perfectly. While the audio aspects of the movie are great, the individual story lines drive its progression, and the mystery is well-executed, I have to say that this movie is just plain funny. The writers definitely played into the funnier moments, especially with the gag humor (see "Objects in the mirror may be Fred Jones joke).
Overall, I really enjoy just about everything this movie has to offer. Good plot, good characters, good mystery. I have a feeling this movie will start a new succession of Scooby movies that are linked to each other story-wise. This is not the last we'll see of Coco Diablo, I'm sure. (9 / 10)

I feel like this is what a Hollywood movie should be for a reboot sticking to the classic character design while also having a good and original plot that actually makes you think it looks classic but feels new and the animation is smooth and Velma may be gay in this film which some people might hate but cmon scooby doo has always played with gay characters I mean look at Fred for example speaking of Fred he’s going insane with no mask to pull in fact everyone is going insane there just normal teens with nothing original to do and it feels great and refreshing from the old Hollywood aspect of “oh make Velma black and Daphnis Asian and get rid of scooby doo” they stuck to something original and made a new plot out of it that’s still faithful to the source material and I love it

I really liked this movie-easily in my top ten Scooby things-but I'm not entirely sold on the animation, and despite being bi myself, I've never liked Lesbian Velma, for the same reason I don't like Daphne/Fred: it's just ascended fanon with little textual evidence before "modern" Scooby. If anything, Velma historically has had more chemistry with Fred.

I missed the Cartoon Network airing Friday because I had to go out, so I skipped directly to the review segment. Maybe I'll try to free up some money to buy a physical copy because of the glowing recommendation. Anyway, I'm here because I wanted to hear about Velma. I'm so glad that her being a lesbian is no longer a drunken college student joke about how she's the less conventionally attractive girl in the group. Something that would be in a Robot Chicken sketch or Family Guy cutaway in the early 00's. Taking something like that and realizing it can actually be done as a sincere character trait instead of some Gen-X-er disconnected humor bit was just wonderful, and I'm glad to hear they did a lot with it.

A great video on this movie. Also loved to see the original lineart tests and concept art! Still need to comment on your Goblin King video. Trick or Treat seems to be a nice film. I mostly like Velma's little romance here. But I'm honestly worried about future projects. If they increase further on the zanyness and the meta jokes on future projects, this might be a bit much for me. I mean, I love Be Cool, but that new era of films might head to a whole different level. Sure, they have to change the direction to go with the times and I might be a bit too old to judge and maybe you'd say, I babble nonsense. 😅

I feel like the comedy level here is more to do with the Director since he tends to come from a very zany background when it comes to writing and directing, so we will have to see if other directors carry that on or if he was just bringing his own sense of humor. We don't even have any other movies announced so far, so we will have to wait and see in general for what to expect! Hopefully we know something soon!

I loved this movie when I watched it. I know everyone was going crazy over Velma being canonically and unambiguously lesbian here (and don’t get me wrong, that is great because Velma has a great story here while doing good for representation in the franchise), I was initially just shocked because the movie just kinda came out of nowhere- literally, I only heard about it when all the lesbian Velma gushing happened.
I loved the movie, though, because it used all the characters well. Fred’s slow insanity, Shaggy and Scooby’s usual antics, Daphne trying to find herself, and yes, Velma in her endearingly awkward crush with Coco were all fun looks at the gang. And Coco was a fun side character in the movie, and the resolution between her and Velma was nice. And the animation on everything, Coco included (like, they were so excessive with her movements in the best way) was so incredibly done. The trailers didn’t really look great, so I was admittedly worried on that front, but I was very happy to have been wrong there.
It’s definitely up there for Scooby movies, lesbian Velma or no, because it just works as a great Scooby story. And really… it’s more lesbian Velma or yes, since Velma’s story here was great and also worked in pretty cleanly, not being too heavily overblown and more subtle as just one aspect of the story. It’s hard not to talk about when discussing the movie, since everyone gushes over that subplot, but also it’s an incredibly fun part of the story I’m right there with all the Velma love in this movie.

I can't believe the writers of the Scooby Doo series would decided to make Velma come out as a lesbian because the original Velma from past Series of Scooby is into boys as seen in What's New Scooby Doo, the live action movies and the cartoon movies so why would they suddenly decided to change all that.

As mentioned in the video, it's technically not sudden at all since Velma also ends up in a romantic relationship with Marcie in the second season and end of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated way back in 2012-2013 🙂 I have a whole video on that storyline and arc as also mentioned in the video

@@Scoobytopia well I mean why not just have her be BI? It feels like just making her lesbian after all the years of her being with men is weird. It very much seems like BI erasure.

Considering they didn't label her in any way whatsoever, I don't think there's any reason to assume she isn't already presented bi, or even any other way. It's for that very reason I opted for the more nuanced "Velma's Queer Evolution" instead of "Velma's Lesbian Evolution" or the like when discussing her arc in Mystery Incorporated. The creators for that show did write her specifically as a lesbian and not straight or bi, but that doesn't necessarily mean queer fans who see themselves in her shouldn't be able to read her that way as well. In cases like this movie, the lack of labeling while still making it clear that she's queer is able to give that kind of power. She doesn't need two love interests in one movie, both of different gender, to establish anything, just one enough to communicate she's on that sexuality spectrum and can be read that way so however that audience member wants to see her, they can, and it won't inhibit the others who might read her a different way instead of putting her in a box.
