    Good assessment of these e-outboard engines. The ePropulsion has been driving the tender of our Beneteau 40 for about two years now before we had him on an open sailboat to get in and out of the harbor. Overall we are pretty pleased with the engine.
    Our main reason for choosing the ePropulsion over the Troqueedo was none of your mentioned reasons. For us, it was how the drive works. The Torqueedo has gears between the electric engine and the propeller. The eProulsion has direct drive where the propeller is mounted directly on the motor shaft. The gears in the Torqueedo can fail if the propeller hits something and the geared drive is significantly more nosy.
    Two things to be aware of, like every battery, getting older, there may be some surprises, the power can drop faster than projected.
    The other one is the battery housing, specifically the black part. It has cheap injection molding and can crack easily, and not much force is needed. Ours broke while it dropped from just a couple of inches on a wooden pier. I thought it was no big deal. I will order a spare and repair it. The problem was that this piece was not available as a spare part, and ePropulsion suggested getting a new battery. In the end, we got lucky, and our local retailer had a defective battery and was willing to sell us the lower part of the housing.

      When the motor is under the waterline the possibility of water ingress is greater. In many places it is considered rude behavior or poor etiquette to lift a dinghy motor up and leave it that way at a dinghy dock because with the people coming and going and crowding causes sharp props out of the water to slash and damage inflatable boats.
      If you need to leave the motor under the water for hours each day if you spend a lot of time ashore then the possibility of the seals eventually failing increase as the years go by. That's why regular outboard motors are supposed to change their lower unit oil regularly. They can take a tiny bit of water getting in past the shaft seals. Fancy electric motors really can't.

      The Torqeedo 1003 and 503 models were geared. They have been replaced by the 1103 and 603, both brushless direct drive. I never found the 1003 to be that noticeably loud except in videos. The 1103 is as quiet as the Spirit 1.0 line.

    99.99% done? It has been a special era following the coming of Athena and I assume a whole lot of us feel a little bewildered when there are no more Sunday updates and how to do things properly. Mads, I hope you realize that your refit/remake/new-make have made a profund impact on the entire DIY boating community. A really really big thank you.
    So now, at the commencement of a new era which hopefully will entail lots of actual sailing, I'm sure many of us will continue to travel with you and Ava on your exploratory passages across the seven seas. Good and safe luck to both of you.

    Bravo Zulu for wearing PFDs in the dinghy. Here in the states we have found that only about 1 in 100 cruisers ever wear them and will even make snotty remarks to those few of us who buck the trend and always wear them. "Not a good swimmer, huh?" Is one of many things folks have said. Whatever, we care not for peer pressure and religiously wear them in the dinghy and on deck.
    Because of moisture after a rain in a dinghy, and theft concerns at the many weird places we tend to leave our dinghy for hours at a time as we explore towns and wildlands, we use cheap Type-III non-inflatable ski vest type PFDs in the dinghy that don't mind getting a soaking or being left out in the UV rays of the sun.
    We have nice inflatable PFDs with an integrated harness for tethers when we are sailing and always-ALWAYS wear them whenever we leave the cockpit no matter the conditions unless we are at anchor or docked. If it gets bad or dark they go on and we even put on the tethers -especially when one of us is belowdecks sleeping.
    Cute little E-outboard. It does make a lot of sense to have an electric outboard since you already are "All-In" on the heavily electric-powered boat systems including the all electrical galley. I am afraid that 3 knots is not going to cut it though in many areas with even a halfway strong current. We once got stuck in the marina at the dinghy dock when in New York City because we were unable to make it back to our mooring ball since the current was too strong to return to our boat. We had to wait hours for the tide to change and by that time it was pretty cold and dark. We hadn't prepared with warmer clothes or lights.
    IMHO a dinghy needs to make closer than 5 knots minimum. Maybe if you row at the same time you could make that speed to beat the current.

    • @Garryck-1

    To give up a little speed to get rid of the noise ,smell and maintenance of a gas motor is a win . The only thing I'd invest in is the extra battery just in case you want to travel farther without the worry an stress of being able to get back to the boat. Great video as always. We bought an eprop plus last year and it is fantastic. But I have a longish walk to our dinghy to get out to our sailboat and the combined battery and lg still weighs enough. Then I discovered a ‘Kicker’ from thrustme.no this has the same power, much less range but weighs only 4.5Kgs! It’s as easy to use and as powerful as the big one and the range is enough to go to shore and back (charges easy on a dc system). I haven’t got them but they say they have add-on batteries. I think if I had known about this first - I would have just had this and extra batteries. As it is I have both 😜. Happy Sailing!

    I've been a service technician on these motors and most of the faults were user error. Thinking they could lift the whole engine out of the water with the handle or using the cable and connector like it was a steel pipe instead of a cable. The same people destroy their smartphone cables. Other than that, really sturdy!

    • @svbarryduckworth628

      On the mains end of the cable.. I loop it back and use some electrical tape wrapped around (hope that makes sense) it takes the strain off the point where it goes into the hard plastic.
      Also the mains sockets location is worth getting right.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 2 роки тому

      As a commercial electrician and a full-time cruiser now for the past 5 years or so I have tried all the tricks. Phone charging cables are just very delicate and not up to the stresses of marine full-time use on a small boat.
      Short of wrapping the cord up and stowing it EVERY time it is not being used it will eventually get pinched on something, be it the nav desk hinged lifting top, the bench seat hinged lifting top, something else tangling and pulling on it, lifting the berth cushions and yanking on them, or a million other things to tangle with a cord in a working boat.
      The reality of a smart mobile device is that it needs to be charged often enough that it will spend as much time plugged in and charging as it does not plugged in. We have 12v lighter sockets all around the boat at all berths and workstations for Anker USB plugs. Cords are often dangling and don't.always get neatly hung up and out of the way. That is the reality of a working boat.

    Once you're satisfied with the outboards performance, you can always reinforce the inside of the handle with fiberglass as a preventative measure. I'd slather that battery connector with dielectric grease, considering how likely it is that it will be splashed with salt water regularly in use... 😎

    You will want to pay attention to tides and currents with that out board. In the Pacific North West where I live you'll often find yourself moving several knots backward with the motor pinned forward. I suspect that you'll run into similar situations through out the world.

      We once got stuck in New York City on the Hudson river at the 79th Street Marina dinghy dock and could not get back to our boat at the mooring ball because of the current. We had to wait hours for the tide to change until we could go back with our laundry, and by that time it was well after dark plus we had not prepared with any jackets or a light.
      A dinghy needs to go about 5 knots for a cruising tender.

      We got inexpensive ski vest type PFDs to use in the dinghy -and we wear them there religiously even if the dinghy dock or beach is within sight.
      Inflatable PFDs are too much of a theft magnet to leave in the dinghy when ashore and not something you want to get wet when it rains or leave out in the baking tropical sun.
      We have come back to our dink to find the rain has nearly swamped it while we were out on a shore excursion. Everything inside was floating around. An automatic inflatable would have self-inflated while we were gone.

    I know a little of the story behind the junk rig Warrior. She was for sale ~3yrs ago and we viewed her. She was built in 1996 and was conventionally rigged; the seller had had her converted to junk schooner. We were gutted not to buy her but for us, the price and condition did not match up.

    Here in St Martin, where we are currently anchored on the French side, the trip to the Dutch side of Saint Maarten is several miles each way. There is no way the electric outboard would be practical for actual cruising IMHO unless you want to spend half the day going in one direction. Saba is another example of the need for a powerful motor to move you a rather long distance through sometimes substantial waves. I’ll be curious to see how you feel about it once cruising full time.

    Electric outboards are great for moving around the marina in calm conditions, but if your anchored a few miles out somewhere and the weather is not calm, it will be very underpowered.

      Nothing to do with being electric. The same could be said about any tiny gas outboard with the same power. You can get electric outboards big enough to seriously scoot, but the bigger ones require stand alone batteries. Torqeedo and epropulsion both have options roughly equivalent to a 9 or 10 hp gas engine. Torqeedo has options up to around 80 hp equivalent.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 2 роки тому +1

      It isn't really 3HP either. 747watts = 1HP and this outboard is 1000w.
      It may accelerate like a 3hp but overall thrust at speed will be be barely over 1HP. Our 3HP 2-stroke.can push our dinghy nearly 5 knots and is fine in rough seas. Mads' "3hp" electric outboard can only do 3kt.

    • @FlesHBoX
      @FlesHBoX 2 роки тому +1

      @@svbarryduckworth628 Yeah, I really wish that these companies would stop with these inflated "HP equivalent" numbers. It feels dishonest, and only gives fuel to the anti-ev crowd.

    • @svbarryduckworth628
      @svbarryduckworth628 2 роки тому +1

      @@FlesHBoX it is true that an electric motor does have a different torque curve than a 2 or 4-stroke so they do pull up on plane easier and once there they don't need the same max thrust to maintain it. But it is getting ridiculous that they say a 1000w motor (at the motor shaft not the prop where modern gas outboards are measured for HP) is the equivalent of a 3HP gas outboard. In Mads' case that 1000w e drive is NEVER going to get anything but a tiny plastic kayak on plane, much less a RIB. In reality for getting to a top speed in displacement mode that 1000w e drive is really only 1.25HP -or less, if you include gear losses getting down to the prop. They are claiming more than double ehat it really is.

    Sophisticated lady have a regen outboard for their dingy...but they hang it off the boat while under sail to recharge the battery without going through any electrickery 😉 they also can use theirs as a back up motor for manouvring or if their main Diesel fails. ..its slow but will do it and their boats larger and heavier than yours. They tested it.

    It would be very interesting to see an unbiased comparison review of both ePropulsion and Torqeedo equivalent models. Looking at the published specifications, they are similar. I think it is good that the two companies have each other as competitors. We customers will benefit.
    I have always been interested in electric motors in vehicles and boats. I started experimenting with a Minn Kota Endura 50 on my O'Day 19. It was reasonable but had only 3 knots top speed.
    I have been using a Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 on my Capri 22 since 2011. I added a Torqeedo Travel 1003 in September 2017 when I had a lead acid battery problem yet still had some sailing/racing events left for the year. I switched to lithium for the next season.
    I found that the selection criteria and speed/distance stats that Torqeedo publishes have been very accurate. The Cruise 2.0 drove the 2250 lbs Capri to hull speed (6 knots) and comfortably handled the 20 knot+ headwinds. The Travel 1003 easily drove the Capri to 5 knots. The Travel is now relegated to the O'Day 19 and an inflatable dinghy.
    Both my wife and I enjoy the quiet when motoring with an electric drive. Two seasons ago we purchased a Catalina 310. It has a diesel. I wonder how long it will be until she will long for the quiet of an electric motor in the 310.

Torqeedo with their Ultralight 1103 AC is .540kw converts to .72 hp. I'm sure it will do just fine for you dingy hopefully if you get some water current doesn't cause problems, will just have to test her out :D.
