I don't know if Mads has been coaching Ava, but her explanation and presentation are amazing. That was the best tutorial for sewing up those types of covers I have seen in a long time. Bravo Ava. Of course Mads is no slouch with the winch install. Athena is approaching the point of being a test bed for every type of modern electronics you can possibly put into a sailboat. Great episode, Love the improvements over the years.Perhaps putting a Sail Life logo on one one of the Jerry can covers. Perhaps it’s over the top but also possibly including Athena and a UA-cam logo. Or maybe just appreciating the clean look. Athena is becoming more and more spiffy. The teamwork and attention to detail is wonderful to see.
Flammable material warnings on the covers is 100% more important than spiffying them up. Any body coming on board to fight a fire in an emergency might assume that they are water containers instead of massive fire bombs.
@@tonysutton6559 I agree. Fuel cans are flammable and should be labeled as such. My suggestion was shameless self promotion rather than safety. I was mistaken to suggest a sail life logo. Safety first. I would hate to see anything happen to Mads and Ava.
@@tommcintyre5608 There is nothing wrong with having the sail life logo as well (in fact it would look good) but we clearly mark the containors and lockers for flamable materials on the safety boats at our sailing club. We know what's in the cans and lockers but other people don't. It's not like the "good old days" when the helm of the boat could sit next to a can of petrol while puffing away at his pipe.

I hesitated a long time before installing a Selden E40i . I just didn't like to loose the possibillty of using a winch manually.
Also I had already an electric winch handle.
Last winter I have installed the winch on the cabin-top too, to reefe the genoa and to hoist main sail.
Best investment for the boat after I discoverd to have a arthroses problem in the hands.
I have sold the electric winch handle because indeed you can redirect lines from other side to the winch.
And ludicrous mode? I like that one too 😇

Great job on the Jerry can covers Ava, I really like how they came out.
Transferring fuel from a Jerry-can to a deck fitting while underway can usually be tricky. Here is a cool tip I discovered. Get a length of clear tubing that is fuel proof and of a diameter that fits snug to the jerry-can opening. Get the length long enough that it can go from the bottom of the can up and out the top and down long enough to fit into your deck fill and close enough that the diameter is nearly air tight. When the seas are calm enough and you are ready to transfer, move the jerry-can close to the deck fill. Insert the hose into the can and push it all the way down to be near the bottom. Put the other end into the deck fitting. Gently squeeze the can just enough until you can see that the fuel is around the bend. At that point you can stop squeezing. Voila, the siphon will start and you are spill free. Remember to try and practice this because when things are rolling you will need to be able to do all this, secure all the plastic lids and manoeuvre things one-handed while tethered.
Diesel is really a mess to deal with. Eva could probably whip together a nice fuel-resistant storage pouch for the fuel/syphon hose. Maybe a temporary Velcro pouch on it where you can temporarily whip in the plastic fuel cap pieces.

I must admit something. I have been watching many sailing channels since 2017 and you are, sadly, one of the newest ones i subbed to. I have almost always favoured the diy-typed channels as i work with boats and have been living closely connected to boatlife on the swedish westcoast all my life. When i start up the youtube app, i usually scroll through to see whats new from the different channels and then decide which order i should watch them in. But when you have released a new episode, i instantly click on it, as i know its going to be top quality diy work with great editing. Thank you both for the excellent work that makes my sunday nights so enjoyable!

I see lots of boats carrying jerry cans and other things on deck. Let me offer a warning of what can happen. Waves do sometimes come out of nowhere, and moving water is a force most people can't imagine. In the Caribbean 1500 rally, I think 2007 or 2008, I was crew on a boat that only had 80 gal tanks, so we carried extra diesel on deck along with the inflatable dinghy rolled, bagged and lashed tightly on the foredeck. We were in the Gulf Stream which was a pretty bumpy, but not "oh shit" levels or anything. We took a rouge wave over the boat and it took everything with it. Jerry cans, dinghy... It also took whatever that stuff was tied to, stantions, lifelines, pulpit... We spent the next hour cutting away lifelines and twisted metal and EVERYTHING, us, the boat, the interior was covered in diesel from the cans getting thrown back onto the deck with every passing wave and exploding diesel everywhere. We sailed for like 9 more days with everyone sick from smelling diesel. I will NEVER go to sea for a true ocean passage in any boat that carries jerry cans, dive tanks, propane tanks, etc on deck.

The amount of wiring and boxes and work for a single ewinch was astounding. You must really need an ewinch, even if it can't be used manually (wtH !!??).
I had a similar reaction to the can covers until Ava was done, when she said it made the deck look great, and she was right, they do look quite good (spfy).
Me watching Ava super attentively and learning how to make complex jerrycan covers... until I realize I’ve never sewn a sock!
It's amazing to me how much wiring is in a boat.

Just a little FYI. When using your hot knife, don't hold the trigger down continually, get it hot and pulse the trigger as you go. It'll last much longer. 😁⛵️
Really like the jerry can covers. They look GREAT!!. Like the electric winch idea but I think the Selden is way over complicated with data busses, PSU's and what nots. It is not any different than a vertical windlass.

Great Jerry can covers, you should go into business. Thanks for a very interesting vlog, good luck to you both.
A much easier method is to drill through the deck for the winch bolts, then use a hole saw to drill through just the top grp layer and core, leaving the bottom layer intact. Then rake out the core for 2 to 3 cms round each hole and fill with thickened epoxy to form a plug. You then drill a final time through the plug for the bolts. You are left with an incompressible plug for each bolt, and through holes which are completely sealed - no chance of wet core. It would also be advisable, whichever method you are using, to fit extra large washers or, even better, a backing plate below deck. Backing plate from, ply, Tufnol or stainless.

You can use a clipper stapler for holding your seams together while sewing. It works great for leather, vinyl or canvas.

Be mindful that the electric winch has a big start up draw. When our Batts are a little on the low side the winch can cause a voltage drop that will trigger a reboot on the chart plotter and Nav instruments, The first to show weird displays in the wind instrument. Good video
He has 300 amp hours at 24 volt I think in Winston lithium cells. The whole boat is electric including the oven and induction hob, if he runs out, he is in trouble!
Looking at how the winch starts up, from the looks of it, it's a soft start, so unless really loaded, there should be no problem. (Also, I suspect, things are going to get interesting if he uses multiple synchronized winches, as they are all supposed to run off the same PSU.
Run out of juice=turn on the generator and let the “dino-squeeze” top off the batteries?
That particular winch has a fancy speed controller. It may not have a high startup current. Probably doesn't.
I draw Mads attention to this potential problem because the first time it happened to me I was about to cross a very busy shipping lane into a strange port when the chart plotter GPS went down. On that occasion I hard to do a hard re-boot of the system to get everything back working but it took many minutes and could not have happened at a worse time/place. The drop in voltage drop was transient but just low enough to affect the instruments. It took a while to fathom out the source of the problem and was only spotted by switching one of the displays to read voltage whilst we checked the system over. The true cause of the problem turned out to be a a faulty battery which gave up the ghost completely within ten days, but the symptoms were masked by the voltage display reading across a bank.

You seem to have the manual winch option covered, but when batteries are low or you just need the exercise(!) it's invaluable. You can also sense the torque/restriction when you operate manually. That was an expensive freeby though, so well done! The covers look great. Our biggest issue is stowage of fenders. Great video.
Great work on the Jerry can covers, I've never seen better. If time permits there are covers that close fit on inflatables over the tubes to prevent sun damage. If decide to make them, I have not seen any just buy it ready made, please also include a thoughtful tutorial as you have done with the Jerry can covers.
