I really liked the format of this video. So many times gardening channels will plant something and forget it so you never know how they turned out. This is fascinating way to grow potatoes, it's kind of like a treasure hunt when you dump the tiers into the kiddie pool. I would think the fingerlings would be great for the greenstalk. Hmmmm I may need to rethink one of my greenstalks this year.
Thanks for your tips! I just got my first GreenStalk this year, on Black Friday, and they have a lid for the water reservoir at the top, so I got that too. The covers are really expensive though, $99 for each type. Might have to wait on a sale for that one.
I did an experiment this winter...I planted up 3 containers with chitted potatoes to see if they'd grow indoors. I kept them in a sunny window, watered, fertilized, and wouldn't ya know it worked! The harvest was small and kind of pale in color, but it was enough for a small batch of potato salad 🤣🥔👍
Thank you for sharing this video with us! We purchased a GreenStalk vertical 5 tower for the first time this year and we love it. We’re growing lettuce, kale, spinach, Zinnia flowers, and strawberries! Never thought one could grow potatoes in it!!!
@@RainbowGardens How tall is the unit when it's completed? Do you have trouble working the top tier? Do you have recommendations for which type veggies work best top tiers to bottom? Can you grow cantaloupe and small melons in this unit? Or is there another type container you recommend? Edit: Great videos!
I agree, I planted potatoes this past spring in the vertical greenstalk , never again. The potatoes are small baby potatoes and not worth the time and effort based on the amount that is harvested. I did also grow potatoes in grow bags and reaped a better harvest and size of the potatoes. The green stalks are not deep enough to yield a decent size potato. But it works well for flowers, herbs, small peppers like jalapeños or hot peppers, lettuce ect
I got my Greenstalk this season after so many great videos from you (thanks!). So far so good, although next time I might need to tweak the soil mixture ratios. It's drying a little too fast for hot/dry Texas weather. But that's okay, just need to water a bit more often. I love the small footprint for the yard.
Thanks for sharing! You are probably able to grow year round in Texas? I grew spinach all through the fall, winter, and it's still thriving here in the spring, zone 6b.
@@RainbowGardens yep! You can do salad mixes pretty much all winter. Even if we do get the random frost it isn't enough to bother them. Same with carrots and other cold tolerant plants.
@@LynnDot Sounds wonderful. I started gardening in zone 8b, northeast Florida, wonderful growing weather most of the time, except for late summer! Whew!
@@RainbowGardens Did you use fingerling _seed_ potatoes? Where does one find those? I'd like to try growing potatoes and those fingerlings look like just the ticket for my needs. I've never seen them before! Congrats on your new 14lb harvest!
Hi new subscriber Why don’t we want to use the potatoes that have sprouted, please I’m a new Gardner and didn’t know this about potatoes. Thanks for sharing
I just came across your channel. Wonderful information. We have 2 greenstalk planters that we are trying for the first time this year. So far so good. P.S. can you use Perlite instead of vermiculite at the same ratio?
That's a good question. I don't plant them there because, as you mentioned, potatoes love the sun. But also, I need some room for the potatoes in each pocket to expand, and the will grow into the center. I like garden experiments, so if you try it, let us know how it goes! Happy Gardening!
Did you put a seed potatoes in each pocket of every tier? If you alternated pockets did you leave those pockets empty or what were you able to plant in them? I got my first Greenstalk last week and im planting tomorrow:) Did they get any water at planting time in the pockets?
@@RainbowGardens is it better to plant them in top or bottom tiers. And would I do same for sweet potatoes or did you plant those any differently. Thankyou 😊🌻
I make it and also buy some at specialty nursery centers. The big box stores do not have a good selectin of compost but I can pick up a couple of bags there too.
I get 4 pounds of potatoes per tier, planted one potato per pocket, when I grow the smaller varieties. Here's a video which should help: ua-cam.com/video/vE6iUT3rmEg/v-deo.html
I am waiting on my potatoes to arrive- yay. I got 2 varieties- determinate- because they don't need to be hilled. However, what I need to know is- how many per pot? It says 12 to 18 inches per plants for spacing. I'm thinking only 2 plants per level. Any tips?
Just got the Greenstalk might give this a try. QUESTION.... How do you store your potatoes. i usually store the ones from the store in a cool dry dark space like a basement. but if you have a lot of them could you store them in trash bags or would that keep to much moisture in. Maybe a big plastic bin?

Small harvest because they aren't deep enough. Use the GS for other items better suited to shallow planting.

Did you get 10 lbs of potatoes from one tier or 10 lbs from the whole greenstalk?
Hi new subscriber
Why don’t we want to use the potatoes that have sprouted, please I’m a new Gardner and didn’t know this about potatoes. Thanks for sharing
I plant the potatoes when the sprouts are very short and green. When they are long and white, they are not good for planting.
I just came across your channel. Wonderful information. We have 2 greenstalk planters that we are trying for the first time this year. So far so good.
P.S. can you use Perlite instead of vermiculite at the same ratio?
can you plant them in the middle of the planter as well even though those new leaves from the original potato wont reach any sunlight?
That's a good question. I don't plant them there because, as you mentioned, potatoes love the sun. But also, I need some room for the potatoes in each pocket to expand, and the will grow into the center. I like garden experiments, so if you try it, let us know how it goes! Happy Gardening!

One in each pocket. If it's warm, go ahead and water your soil good. They'll be up in no time!
@@RainbowGardens is it better to plant them in top or bottom tiers. And would I do same for sweet potatoes or did you plant those any differently. Thankyou 😊🌻
Where do you get your compost, thank you, have a great day.

Looking for the bug cover
It is on presale now on their website. I think they will be in later this month. lddy.no/3l75
First time using the Greenstalk. How deep did you plant them?
I think around 3 to 4 inches
@@RainbowGardens thank you.
Roughly how many potatoes were grown on each tier? I know you planted 1 per section of the 6 divided sections on each tier. Thank you :)
I get 4 pounds of potatoes per tier, planted one potato per pocket, when I grow the smaller varieties. Here's a video which should help: ua-cam.com/video/vE6iUT3rmEg/v-deo.html
@@RainbowGardens Thank you! What a fun thing to grow in them!
Can you tell me how deep each greenstalk container is?
Sure, the Original Greenstalk has 10" tall tiers and the new "Leaf" has tiers which are 7" tall. You can find the leaf on their website: lddy.no/3l75
I am waiting on my potatoes to arrive- yay. I got 2 varieties- determinate- because they don't need to be hilled. However, what I need to know is- how many per pot? It says 12 to 18 inches per plants for spacing. I'm thinking only 2 plants per level. Any tips?
I had great results planting 1 per pocket, 6 per tier.
Seems like a pain in the rear to fill, stack and empty then refill and restack for potatoes then followon crops.
It's much easier than weeding and watering a regular garden. Plus, no animal damage!
Just got the Greenstalk might give this a try. QUESTION.... How do you store your potatoes. i usually store the ones from the store in a cool dry dark space like a basement. but if you have a lot of them could you store them in trash bags or would that keep to much moisture in. Maybe a big plastic bin?
No, don't store them in a plastic bag. I put them in a cool dark place, single layer with ventilation.
You can just use your own potatoes as seed potatoes year after year, buy once!
You sure can! Just have to store them properly so they do not over sprout before the next season.
Too michntime wasted in showing the sign or writings!:(
Not advisable. Just use stem cuttings. Saves you 2 months trying to grow a 3-inch seedling.
Will not watch your video again… EVER
This is a man…ha! So obvious
Seriously? That's very funny....
