This is my second podcast .. and I’m so thrilled I found a community that feels as passionately about some films that I have thoroughly enjoyed .. my first podcast was Anurag Verma with chashme badoor .. choti si baat is a movie I have watched several times , similarly with Rajnigandha, Baaton Baaton main .. something about simple movies with a simple plot and ofcourse Bombay / Delhi as the backdrop.. what beautiful films to immerse yourself into .. ❤❤❤❤ loved the conversation ..

This movie will always has a special place in my heart. The only Indian actress which could melt my heart by just her smile, Vidya Sinha ma'am. Thank you for this one. I was also in awe of the guest man, how can you be so resourceful?

Regarding the morality of the movie, its showcased beautifully.
Yes, in the start of the movie - first half, Arun is doing not so great things but you have to understand that he is not crossing the line.
He is not following her with undue intentions, he is not cat calling her or want her. He is smitten by her and somehow wants to advance the conversations. But how do you do this with a stranger.
So that is shown beautifully in the movie. Also when Arun is doing all these things Prabha is aware of all the things. And she is okay with this. In fact she looks forward to the day he will get a chance to converse.
Regarding the second half of the movie, the training Arun gets is something to take care of his naiveness.
He gets scammed, he gets interrupted by Nagesh when he gets to have lunch with Prabha and his junior doesn't respect him.
The Colonels training helps him deal with people who are taking advantage of him. And by doing these things he stops Nagesh's undue attempt at Prabha.
We know it's undue because he knows about the tactics and he uses them despite knowing Prabha has an inclination towards Arun.
And Arun in the final act of the scene, attempts to do the tactics with Prabha but she is already in love with him and Arun has a moment of realisation that these tactics helped him deal with people taking advantage of him but these won't help with love.
He gives up on the tactics and thats when Prabha confessed her love for Arun.
A beautiful Choti Si Baat ❤

Thank you so much for a doing a show on this movie, these movies are hugely underrated simply because they are simple. I have been watching Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Sai Paranjpye & Basu Da since the 90's now. Eminently rewatchable & immensely entertaining they deserve high praise and represent our lives much more than regular Bollywood fare. Kudos to Eshan for having such in-depth knowledge and understanding of these movies. Please do an episode on Chasmee Badoor at some point as well
    🙏

Just wanted to add in something about the company Arun works in being Jackson Tolaram. It may have to do with how companies in Bombay owned by British people, post independence were sold to or partnered with Indian businessmen which resulted in these names. You may see that in P. L Deshpande's writing as well. Great episode overall though, a really sweet little film it is.

Absolutely LOVE this 'chhoti si' film.
Talking about Alpha male stuff in the movie, I think Basu Da redeemed himself in the end where Arun leaves all the Alpha shit and just let his feelings and his love do all the work. Even Col. Julius understands this and rushes to stop Arun. So in the end director showed that all of that Alpha stuff ek taraf, but nothing conquers the true love.
So IMO, that Alpha stuff only helped Arun to eliminate his competition and raise his self confidence. Prabha already had feelings for him so there was no need for him to be insecure from her side.
Col. also helped him to get his money back from the cheater. So all the mentorship was not for the waste.

Woohoo! The best episode of HIAW, 3 of you make a great panel. I always enjoy the episodes on 90s movies, but this episode pushed me to watch an older movie that I never considered watching. This 70s movie was so much more relatable and enjoyable than dunkies, animals of 2024!!

I’m pretty sure these movies were successful but with the urban educated middle class because my extended family who were all working in education, art or govt employees in tier 1-2 cities and industrial towns would only watch Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Mrinal Sen, Shyam Benegal and Basu Chatterjee movies. They found the fake choreographed violence of mainstream Bollywood movies very disturbing and immature. Working class would not watch this as much probably - the equivalent of today’s single screen audience. Amol Palekar was like the Ayushman Khurrana of those times (minus the preaching and the heavy north indian chhichhorapan)

    - This movie is a shy person's fantasy. Being confident helps a shy person professionally and personally, but how far are you willing to change yourself?? Where is the line between confidence and assholery??
    - It also shows that Prabha would have definitely left Arun, had he chosen to go ahead with the original plan.
    - Also if social media stalking is okay today, then cant blame him for following her around with the intension of asking her out but not having the courage to do so.

The amorality of amol's imaginations, so to speak, is the shadow side of the nice guy. So one might judge it in hindsight, but its actually a humanising, although irredeeming, side to his psyche.
Edit : the historian addresses this, somwhat, later on.

Feedback/suggestion : consider transitioning to Hindi for this Has it aged well show - it is bollywood after all 😁 and may help increase your audience. English works better for shows like cyrus says (also a fan) .

It was actually Rajnigandha which was Basu Chatterjee's first big hit, though Piya Ka Ghar had also done reasonably well. Rajnigandha was also Amol Palekar's debut. You are right - Chitchor came after Chhoti Si Baat. All three were superhits in a row - Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat and Chitchor. They made Amol Palekar, Vidya Sinha and Zarina Wahab big stars. Zarina Wahab followed it up with Gharaonda (though it was not made by Basu Chatterjee) which also starred Amol Palekar. But Vidya Sinha and Zarina Wahab's stardom did not last long.

For God's sake, please, please, please don't produce any more episodes on movies from the 1970s and 1980s unless you are willing to put time into research. If you don't know the reason behind the British-Indian names of the companies, the "dahi wada" dialogue from "Golmaal," the name of the legendary actor Utpal Dutt in "Shaukeen," or the range of roles played by the first superstar of Hindi Cinema, Dadamuni Ashok Kumar, don't act like an expert and make expert comments. There's nothing wrong with being ignorant about the facts, but invest time in reading books and watching movies-not just a particular movie for that episode, but related movies of the same director or actor from that period-to better understand the cinema of that era before producing a show on those movies!
