This was an absolutely great podcast. Well done. Would love to hear Daniel Levy on something like this. He’s someone who comes to mind and always gets the abuse.
I'm a Sunderland fan who will be forever grateful for Charlie's work on the board, stabilising the club after Ellis Short's total dumping of affairs, and handing things off to the new ownership
I used to support a championship club. It's now too expensive i now watch a None league side. Its affordable for myself and is enjoyable and you are part of a step 2 none league club. Players are friendly and approachable our board help around the ground. Supporters are leaving the higher league clubs because they are simply too expensive. The fall off in working class youngsters as supporters after 14 is huge.
Spent 4 years in league 1 is the reason why it wasn’t seen as a success. It was when KLD came in and had sole control after buying half the club that we eventually got promoted. They basically got the club for free on the basis the parachute payments payments went to the last chairman. Very economical with the truth this guy.
@@Micfri300 under no circumstances was it like they paid £50m - £60m for it, I don’t think I am the one with an issue with economics if you have come to that conclusion. They took the club on thinking they could get us up first season and flip for a profit which didn’t happen. They were then left them with a club that was to big for them.
@an4189 revenues in league 1 are significantly lower than in the premier league. You paid the price for paying over the hill big team reserves stupid amounts of money and nearly went under.

I know he is a bully. But that is business. It's harsh, but when there is a money at stake. They will sack anyone. Sunderland and Durham is a footballing area if they couldn't sell 40,000 with not much else to do besides there and pricing done right then what's wrong with them. Fleet Street 90s and The City, even market stalls, are ruthless it's business. I know it's harsh she was sacked as she had a baby, but the reality is these lads were never in a position to buy Sunderland they didn't have the capital and lied to the Mackems and gambled on going up and getting a quick sale... so they were chancers/charlatans and any Collateral Damage like the Marketing Lady were expendable to them. It's harsh but they didn't have the money, so they were desperate to buy sell flog high and that's the case in a lot of businesses. They'll be your best mate when they need you but sack you off the minute they can. Football has a lot of this, with low margins. Despite having big wages and expensive ticket prices. The business isn't run that well.
@daveseville7394 you dont need to behave in that manner. I've worked for and with some much bigger names and have never seen anyone behave so abhorrently to staff members.
I agree but Donald and him were frauds. They wanted to get Sunderland up on the cheap and the lack of enthusiasm for her trying shift tickets was a pretext to cut costs and sell for a big amount of wonga. And needless to say I'm happy they have new and better owners @jackb5640
didnt know he was back in football at charlton, good luck to them. does anyone know who he was talking about when he said sunderland successfully sued a player? all i could find was them suing a doctor over the medical on someone
Certain parts of this interview are downright appalling. Charlie: We turn "street boys" with "good DNA" into respectable people? Pox on the committee of, you know, "women" (apparently that's an ick) who advocated for equal pay? Mentioning the female player who recently committed suicide to bolster his sneering arguments about women's football? We don't know everything about that situation. We do know that her manager was sacked, at the time for an inappropriate relationship with another player. Keep that poor young woman out of this. Again, appalling.
Every club USED to be social and cultural clubs for the local community. Now sadly, football is not a sport - it's a business, making ridiculous amounts of money for parasitical business people.
If you’re club like our with 40,000 each home game you can make money Sunderland are the biggest club in the championship and bigger than some of the premier league clubs
Charlie Methven talking shite about his Sunderland time again. The bloke is so narcissistic that he's probably reading this comment, he's an absolute charlatan who will take money out of any club he gets his hands on. It would be nice if the interviewer pushed back with some basic research, Methven talking about revenues that didn't exist and were never achieved at Sunderland.
He left the club in better state?? Did he fuck He left it middle of league one, stripped it of all its assets with no saleable asset players and an average league one side The new ownership group have revamped whole academy, clear pathway to first team, clear recruitment model with many assets, got us promoted and stable in the championship If Dreyfus hadn’t bought us we were close to administration. This bloke uses big fancy terms, talks like some sort of pioneer of the sport Complete bluffer who rated himself higher than anyone else does
EPL1 and EPL2 leagues? That' would be a big change. Not sure why he keeps mentioning MLS as it always trails EPL in TV viewership and general interest in the States. He's probably targeting the Mexican league Liga MX who has the highest TV viewership among leagues in the States (~ more than the EPL).
@@callumalston5755 bloody hope so, since Duchalet came along and trashed Powells newly promoted side its been depressing seeing us tossed about by billionaires.
I like Charlie. He's a really intelligent successful person and I rate him. But I think he's not quite right about womens football- in the context of future potential value. Think about it like this. Let's say I've bought a property. The property itself is great to have in my portfolio but it's not really worth a lot right now because of the area that it's in. However theres indicators that the area could potentially boom in the not too distant future. So do I invest now and renovate it, or wait just in case the value doesnt increase and I cant get my money back. And then everyone else in the same town, get together in meetings and they start to discuss it and think the same thing - maybe I shouldnt invest in case it doesnt increase in value. Uncertainty is created, the developers back out. All the owners decide theres no point investing in their individual properties in case they lose money. The properties just remain low value. The area stagnates. Theres no money in it. This is womens football in the UK. The karen Carney review wasnt nonsense. It was just misunderstood. If you took at that report with a lens around regeneration and investment in a property developers environment it would make sense right? For me, hanging on to the Women's Football "property" waiting for everyone else or the league to make it a success to increase your value just wont work. Activity has to happen in the overall area. So CEO's need to get together and agree an approach. Do it together. You cannot compete without competition. Stop banding together sowing the seeds of uncertainty. Band together and think outside the box to elevate and innovate, start with the statement - "We want to make this a success. How can we do it together to ensure success". This is the view of every single owner that takes on a mens club - how can I make this a success. So why isnt it the starting point for the womens teams? And for the record - I have loads of ideas that could work.

I find it quite amusing that so many sunderland supporters detest him, but still listen to or watch the show!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Fascinating conversation.
I understand the dislike Sunderland have for Charlie but our experience has been pretty positive tbh.

Buying a football club with the expectation that its values increase and then you sell it....Sounds like a property bubble to me.
which footballer did sunderland sue (and why) ? he mentioned first ever club to do so after chelsea failed with Mutu
Pape Djilibody or N’Doye. Think it was Pape
