Scott, you have such great lines in your videos! My favourite this time: “Acid trips are not fun if you’re the supervisor.” Your enthusiasm for Enright matches my own. Out of the five Enright novels I’ve read, I think The Gathering is the one I would recommend that you read next. The ending of The Wren, the Wren was my favourite part, btw. My favourite dog breed: mixed mutts like my own little darling.
I think The Gathering sounds like a winner for my next Enright. Some of the best dogs are mixed and they're so under appreciated. I guess my dog is mixed 2, although, I'd probably say he was a cross.
If I can rebutt a bit on the Fitzcarraldo book covers, I actually really like them, how plain they are. Plus I think it makes the brand distinguishable, that's their look, I've seen a lot of booktubers these days have a Fitzcarraldo section on their shelves because the books are so uniform. I also really enjoyed this video, I like how international and diverse your taste is, of all my years watching booktube I don't think I've ever seen a Cameroonian book review, great insight!
I agree that the Fitzcarraldo covers are great branding, but I think it's branding the publisher over the author and the book and I'm not a fan... They do publish some wonderful books, so I guess I'll live through the US covers. Thank you so much. I love learning about new to me places through reading, so I'm always looking for books from afar.
Whenever I think I have a favourite dog breed, I just see another breed that I love. Easier to say that I don't particularly like small, yappy ones! 😅 Every time you mentioned Nell the character, I was just getting confused. More coffee needed... 🙃🙃
Great video. Loved especially your review and comments about the Book of Daniel. Do want to read The wren, the wren. Thanks again for the great reviews but next time have a few DNFs.
Another brilliant video, Scott! Thank you for these intelligent reviews. I’m in awe of your preparation for these videos. I, too, loved The Wren, The Wren, and I’m looking to read more Anne Enright now. I have a copy of The Gathering. I may read that next. Hmmm…favorite dog breed? Irish setter, actually! 😊
I think I misrepresented my Mum - she isn't an Olympic medalist, she is an Australian National Track and Field medalist. She got on the Victorian 4x100 metre team and they won. It is still a very impressive achievement of hers, but not Olympic level. Golden Retriever's are such silly dogs, so much personality!
I love these Recent Reads videos! While Still Born sounds interesting but I could see the subject matter being probably not good for me personally. The Wren, The Wren is going on my list right now! (I don't have a favorite dog breed sadly)
CAT! That's hate speech! No, I love cats too, before I ever owned a dog, I preferred cats, but then I got a dog and he converted me to dogs... Maybe I would be a cat fan if I owned cats first.
Good video! Surprising that you didn’t have a single DNF. Learned By Heart was decent for me, but I also knew nothing about Anne Alister going into it. I could see it being a bit boring for someone who knew more of her story. Still Born is going on the TBR. Ooh and Book Of Daniel got added to the TBR back with the discussion video, but thank you for reminding me I need to read it. Do Irish people even write bad books? I’ve yet to find one.
I know and the next recent reads video I only have 1! That's 20 books finished from 21! I wasn't familiar with Anne Lister either, but I think she didn't need to do a lot more to excite me, so maybe just a minor different in our preferences there. Hope you love Book of Daniel and Still Born.
Labrador Retrievers! I agree that Irish writers are having a moment this year. I am finishing The Bee Sting, and also read Sebastian Barry for the first time this year. Both authors are fabulous. I am also a big fan of Sally Rooney, and Claire Keegan.
I’m super excited to get to The Wren, The Wren. Great review! And I can’t possibly pick a favorite dog breed. A few of my favorites are corgis, Australian shepherds, and samoyeds.
Happily skipping away with some new recs in my pocket, thank you! Excited to get to my last innocent year, and ive been saying this! The Irish novel is where its at! Ive been enjoying them so deeply, so will definitely be adding the wren the wren to the list as well! Wonderful vid!
I’ve raised two boxers and can’t imagine switching breeds anytime soon 🐶 immediately added the wren, the wren audiobook to my library hold. I too am currently in the vice grip of irish authors. Lol i had the apology as a library book bc i was so entranced by that persimmon cover illustration (and ive been trying to read more korean lit) but it’s so hot apparently they immediately demanded it back so i didn’t even get to read it. And now maybe i never will! Very intrigued by what you said about my last innocent year. And the book of daniel! As always, great video with so many recs to dive into!
It's so interesting how we all seem to raise one dog breed and that's our favourite, kind of points out to me just how many awesome dogs there are. Boxers are so friendly, which is extra funny because they look really scary if you don't know them. Yeah, don't worry about the Apology, just buy Persimmons from the shop and enjoy them when they're at the delicious in between stage between soft and hard instead. Hope you love The Wren The Wren.
Hey Scott! Just passing through and saying hi. I find cockapoos adorable but I think golden retrievers are pretty great. I'm not sold on The wren the wren, I had a go with it in August and just wasn't landing.
Crazy Beagles! I think you both have sold me on The Book of Daniel and The Wren, The Wren. I think I'm one of the few people who didn't like The Gathering, despite the excellent writing. Actress is beautifully written too, I liked it more but it found it a bit forgettable. I was into athletics, back in the day and I remember watching Jane Flemming in the heptathlon, she's about my age, guess that means I'm about the same age as your Mum 🙂 Happy Reading
I've never read any other Anne Enright, I obviously will after The Wren The Wren, but I her writing style honestly is not something I like in other authors, but it was just so good I didn't care. Haha, maybe you and my mum were friends or something. :p
Learnt by heart bored me so not sure I will be checking out any Emma Donoghue any time soon. Added The wren, the wren to my TBR. My favourite dog breed is probably Cavalier King Charles Spaniel just because they are super cute.
I find Emma Donoghue a bit hit and miss, really liked The Wonder if you want to give her another chance - but she's somebody I am going to wait for reviews of in the future. My friend used to own a King Charles Cavalier, and they're very cute. :)
Mixed breed for sure. But if I would have to pick a breed, it might be Weimaraner. But let's talk about Still Born, because I love a good book discussion, even more when the opinions differ. What I liked about this book was the brutal honesty. No sugarcoating of possible thoughts and experiences of being a mother, becoming a mother, not wanting to have children, being a woman. Everything is straight into your face. Also I liked that disability was described as something connected to fears, but not as something that is pure misery. This book is talking about mothering in many forms, being motherly caring can come in different ways, not only in having children of your own and also not necessarily caring about children only. It is also a book about friendship and how friendship can change when one friend becomes a parent. I expected a bit more on this topic from this book, but it explored this theme quite a bit, especially at the beginning of the story. What I didn't like was the writing, I didn't think it was that good (might have been also due to the translation). It didn't really feel like a well drafted novel to me, more like a testimonial. It also sounded like the main narrator was also telling Alina's story in third person, but how can she, if she isn't given all the details? Maybe I missed something here, I don't know. The imagery of the pigeon story was totally unnecessary and a bit too much on the nose for me. This book generally wanted a bit too much in my opinion. The mother/adult daughter relationship fell a bit short and was as much shoehorned into the story as the feminist protest theme. I could have done without both, because this is a feminist story in itself anyway. I was also a bit annoyed by some of the unnecessary depictions of women's bodies and that the priviledged situations of the main characters haven't been adressed. Overall I felt much more distant to this book, than I would have usually with a story on this topic. This was mainly due to the fact that for me it was written a bit in a way like rattling something off.
Mixed Breed is a fantastic answer, so many good dogs are mutts. Sorry for the delay replying to your thoughtful comment. I love what you said about disabilities being presented as relating to fear and not misery, it wasn't something I realised the book was doing until you mentioned it. When the writing of a translated book doesn't work, I always wonder if that's the author, translator or language. I often find Korean novels are very simply written, and maybe that style means certain books don't work while other books are improved. For me, my enjoyment of a novel, writing is probably the least important aspect, it's more of a pass or fail thing. I didn't mind the mother daughter theme, I felt like that gave the novel a cyclic feel to it. I agree it was a feminist book with or without the protest, but it didn't harm the novel for me.
I liked The Wren, The Wren and I thought Learned by Heart was fine, but passable and not a favourite. However, I cannot respond to your question. I am a crazy cat lady.
No dnfs?? is this even a scott video?? I passed up the opportunity to read a house for alice and it sounds like that was the right choice. I agree learned by heart was too slow and shallow. And I think some of the everyday schoolgirl stuff needed to be trimmed. Being behind on wrap ups is a feeling... I know well 😅 The Book of Daniel has such a boring cover but the themes and topics sounds so interesting and well developed and delved into? You also said it's Nelle's favourite and that convinced me enough already. I find it so fascinating when the writing is done in a unique way and has a lot of moving parts in structure but really manages to work nonetheless. The wren, the wren sounds great.
I know, I was confused when I put this together. Because I'm behind in wraps, I can see that there's a period of almost no DNFs, followed by what I can only call a correction. Book of Daniel is really well crafted, it is just a step above most other books. Daniel is very hard to like, and that influenced my enjoyment, but still 5 stars.
Scott, you have such great lines in your videos! My favourite this time: “Acid trips are not fun if you’re the supervisor.”

This is the correct reaction to best dog breed!
I love your take on books. You're honest and, at times, humorous comments are refreshing . Favorite dog breed...Chow. 😊
They're so fluffy! I've not seen many Chows, but theyre really cute, got that little hint of bear in the way they stand too, they look strong.
Great video. Loved especially your review and comments about the Book of Daniel. Do want to read The wren, the wren. Thanks again for the great reviews but next time have a few DNFs.
Haha, there's more DNFs in the future. :)
lol I love your honesty, please do more reviews where bad books are called out instead of being ignored or sugarcoated with polite icing.
Haha, deal!

Irish Setters are so pretty. I'll probably be reading The Gathering new year too.
All the breeds obviously.
Correct answer.
Golden retriever. I am blown away that your mom is an Olympic medalist! That is super cool. I only run if someone is chasing me….. with a big knife! 😂
I think I misrepresented my Mum - she isn't an Olympic medalist, she is an Australian National Track and Field medalist. She got on the Victorian 4x100 metre team and they won. It is still a very impressive achievement of hers, but not Olympic level.

My favorite dog breed is 🐈. Jk, love cats andddd dogs despite the only one rule

So many good Irish authors at the moment! Labs are great dogs.

I love the way corgis wriggle when they run! 😂
@@GunpowderFictionPlot me too! They are so freaking cute!
Liking the sound of the shapiro and nettel.
Just read a great Irish book from a debut author - they really are having a fab run.
Book of Daniel has gone on the never-ending tbr. As for breed of dog, it’s got to be German Shepherd 💕
Enjoy! And good choice, Shepherds are great.

Great video! You gotta read The Bullet Swallower - Elizabeth Gonzalez James. It was so good!
Thank you for the recommendation, it's not out until January here, but always good to know.
Wow - The Book of Daniel sounds amazing!
Favourite dog breed - anything that isn’t a Viszla?
Hahahaha, poor Rudi!
I love a book that leads to a devastating ending so El Doctorow goes on the list. Cavoodle as my Lola is looking over my shoulder….
