Woolwich is a district within the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It's located just over 8 miles from Charing Cross. Up until the 19th century, it was part of Kent. It merged into Greenwich borough in 1965 and remains the administrative centre. Because of the '-wich' part of the name (the Anglo-Saxon term for a settlement full of artisan activity), people believe the name 'Woolwich' means "trading place for wool".
The first ever McDonald's in the United Kingdom was opened in Woolwich in 1974 and is still there. Cheeseburgers were 21p and a quarter pounder was 48p.
Arsenal F.C. (the famous football club) originated from and takes its name and inspired logo design from the area of Woolwich Arsenal.
Since 1308, the free Woolwich Ferry service has carried vehicles and passengers across the River Thames over to North Woolwich on the other side. The Woolwich foot tunnel is a lot less known but it's entrance is currently hidden behind the doomed Waterfront Leisure Centre.
The Thames Barrier was opened in 1984. It was designed to stop London being flooded by abnormal sea levels from the North Sea. They test the barrier a few times a year, but it's slowly loosing its effectiveness for purpose.
Woolwich was an important naval, military and industrial town. After years and years of economic hardship and social deprivation, it's finally turning its fortunes around. Vast regeneration projects have already radically changed its infrastructure and culture and this is just the beginning of things to come.
Woolwich is served by two mainline train stations, a DLR terminal station, Thames Clipper boat sevices and a large variety of bus routes. It's 2 short stops from London City Airport; a 5 minute journey. From December 2018, Woolwich will be connected by the Elizabeth Line of the new Crossrail train service for a faster, direct connection to Central London and Heathrow international airport.

I was born in Greenwich, lived on Broad Walk, shopped in Eltham, worked in the arsenal , and was married in the church half way up Shooters Hill. I emigrated to to the US and have no idea all these beautiful changes had taken place. I had tears streaming down my face watching the film clips. I had planned on coming back for a visit; I now know for sure I'll be back. Love u London!!!

The reason Woolwich was chosen as the 1st MCDS was because it was geographically good for the American Soldiers that were located in Suffolk and Norfolk bases... the company would still be in London but also help the Soldiers eat burgers... 👌🤣

Interesting to see a more up to date view of Woolwich. I was first acquainted with the place, in July 1984, when I came down on the train from Scotland to do my training up at the Royal Artillery Barracks. I ended up staying until Feb 1985 as my unit were over in Belize. Woolwich was a pretty grim place, at that time, to be fair but we were generally never allowed out during basic training, unless we sneaked out over the fence but you didn't really have any time for anything other than sleep back then. I've had a few trips back to Woolwich over the decades, simply for a trip down memory lane. The place has been redeveloped significantly and the local demographics are completely different.

It’s a tale of two towns now. Affluent professionals in the river side complexes and the old Woolwich. The two don’t mix. Nowhere decent to drink or eat

this is where i did my 14 weeks basic training in march 1980 with the RA (Royal Artillery ) loved the area i remember looking at the piers to the flood barrier at that time i didn't realise that they were only constructing it as i thought it was in full use, but with coming from the north west it was all so strange, but walking round the town was great, i seem to remember 2 stations being at Woolwich as the first day we arrived to start training we got off at Woolwich Arsenal, and when i was sent home on sick leave i was told to go to a station called Woolwich & don't go to the Woolwich Arsenal station and i cant remember if it was closer or further away from the RA barracks, and i also know that Woolwich is actually classed as a garrison, also prior to my sick leave X2 was after having 2 operations in quick succession on the same problem at the Queen Elizabeth Military Hospital ( as it was called a Military hospital back then ) and these 2 operations were performed not longer after having the original operation on the same problem in Warrington just weeks before starting my training, i lost about 4-5 weeks of training all because the original operation and the first one during training failed so i was what they called back SQUADDIED back then, i eventually got right and completed my training, you could say i had a wonderful extended stay in Woolwich
