I was 10 years old when I first heard this album my dad bought it and I listened to it many times before buying the vinyl when I was 16.Now I have it on vinyl ,cd and remixed editions it's my favourite group even after 50 years I never grow old of floyd there are some albums I haven't got ie atom heart mother but I love all the others.
Been listening to Floyd since i was like 15 years old, what 1976? The whole album is fantastic. Ive always interpreted the slow buildup at beginning as to a baby getting ready to be born, and at birth the emotional feeling of both mother and child and then the middle of the vocal the whole experience of a lifetime going by and then coming to full circle at the end of life. It fits in with the whole album. Ticking away the moments that make up the dog day......
The Blonde gal is Sam Brown who had a few songs out and the 2nd is Durga Mcbroom (i think thats how its spelt) she was the singer from a group called (Blue Pearl) I had the greatest pleasure to be at this very same concert and it was breathtaking!
The original singer Clare Torrey had a cold when she layered the tracks, she didn’t think she sounded good. The group was blown away. Told her it was great… I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Pink Floyd twice in my lifetime in a 40yr span. I’m still amazed how the younger generation is discovering them ….. what a pleasure ❤
@@jamesbondbond8388Calm down. It's a question of semantics. You knew what he meant, why do you need to emphasize that you're technically correct with 57 exclamation points?
The lyrics are the human souls crying out against the dying of the light! If you don't understand that then please don't waste the oxygen that is passing your lips by trying to explain it to others!
This song is so great that I'm enjoying watching people react to it. Not one word and it says a lot more than many songs. They were part of my late teens.
My new found sister and brother. I'm Sam hello from Yakima Washington. I'm responding and subscribing to your channel. Your true reaction to a song with no words takes you on a smooth ride of calmness. Thats why your reactions are the same as mine. Peace
Listen to the song again... Notice the introduction by the voice in the background. The Great Gig is when you are dying... Grief, anger fear, helplessness, turning to truth and acceptance. " I am not afraid of dying, why should I be. Why should I be afraid of dying? We all have to go sometime."
The original album featured Clare Torry, a British singer, was born in the United Kingdom, November 1947. Known for performing the scat-vocal part on the song "The Great Gig in the Sky" by Pink Floyd. She did it unscripted and had no significant direction. She was only asked to feel the music and let out how it made her feel.
I'm an old guy. This song has great meaning even tho there's no words. It's about the stages of grief one is in when they find out they're dying. 20 years ago a long-time friend was diagnosed with cancer. When I went to the hospital to visit, I asked him how he felt about his circumstances. He said, remember the "Great Gig In The Sky"? I said of course and he said, well I'm at the second verse ( for lack of a better word since there are no lyrics) if you know what I mean. The third verse would come 2 weeks later. I will never forget him or this very powerful song. Great stuffs folks..
The stages of dying…without words. The whole album should be listened to. It’s a whole story, about life and how we get through it. I don’t smoke anymore, but if you do, light a joint, lay flat on the floor, head phones or volume up to piss the neighbors off, and go from beginning to end. Then you will understand.
i've been listening to this song since the 80"s and i still get chills every single time , i read a quote one time saying , it's basically a saxophone solo
How you doing guys!...I saw The Floyd on this tour when I was 21 years old in Rotterdam, (now 51). Honestly, possibly the best night of my life (and I have 2 daughters)😆When those ladies sang this song I was mesmerized, a truly ethereal experience. You could review 100's of Pink Floyd/Roger Waters songs including a few of my favourites: Comfortably Numb, The Gunners Dream, anything really from The Wall, Animals, The Final Cut, Amused to Death - the list just goes on!! Once you get in to Pink Floyd there is no way back. xx
It's not an interpretation of a life time, just the 5 stages of death, starting with processing the idea that you're dying, and ending with the soul's ascension.
The original was an organ instrumental, then spoken word lyrics were added to piano, finally they wanted a sung vocal, Alan Parsons suggested Clare Torry whom he had worked with, Clare recorded 2 and a half takes which were edited together, after some instuction she was basically given free rein.
No need to constantly tell people to subscribe or comment. They are here for the music and your reaction and do not need to be given instructions as though they are 10 year olds. This is one of the greatest vocals in rock history, originally composed and sung by Clare Torry an English Londoner known for her exceptional jazz and blues improvisations in the 1960s and 1970s
🤗 Subbed for Pink Floyd. Hoping for more tracks (Comfortably Numb) from the Pulse Tour! 😊 Saw Pulse at The Meadowlands in NJ because MSG tickets were waaaaay too expensive! 🥰🐰
This is NOT “laid back and chill”!! This is dramatic power and pure emotion - an evocation of three stages of leaving this Earth. Nothing could be less chill than that. Depth and complexity of feeling - maybe we’ve forgotten what that is in our music? I hope not.
May I suggest you listen to the studio version with Clair Torry doing all three parts herself. She is an incredible singer. She was a session singer who went into the studio and threw down IMO THE BEST PERFORMANCE EVER!! She improvised the part on the fly! Please check it out!!❤️✌🏻
Many years ago (in the early 2000s) I was in a band whose leader loved Pink Floyd. We covered this song, among many other Pink Floyd songs. I had the honor of singing a version of this song as a male vocal.
Great reaction. :) This has been one of my favorite songs for decades. The five stages, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance are a part of the framework that makes up our learning to live with the one we lost.
I was lucky enough to be at this concert...........this made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.....amazing, and beaten only by the original recording by Clare Torry.
Great Gig is phenomenal. I follow a Pink Floyd tribute band called Which Ones Pink and their female singer is just as good as these ladies, she brings a tear to my & makes the hairs on my arm stand up!!! Ck them out, her name is Natalie Azurand
I think you two should do reactions to all the songs at this concert, it's called 'PULSE', and all the songs are masterpieces, well worth a look and listen, check the play list on Wikipedia, three cheers to you two oo thanks
New sub....The studio with the great Clare Torry is the best version IMO. Done in 2 takes! If you didn't hear soul from the blond lady you must have been just settling into the song, Great smiles, great reaction. My top 5 always include Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers Band, Steely Dan and... All worth your reaction! I'd be happy to make suggestions.
Heartfelt lament absolutely MADE for a black girls voice. That said, the original album performance by the white Clare Torry is the ultimate. have a listen.
I've never been able to listen to this version of The Great Gig in the Sky without crying. The studio version is amazing - raw and wild. But this one is polished to a high shine and it just kills me every time, especially when Durga McBroom (the second singer) comes in. This is one of the greatest concerts of all time and I hope you listen to more of it, because the only thing better than Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd live. ✌🏽🤘🏽🖖🏽
You can't find anymore, the true reason of what Claire Torrey was told when she sang it (orig). HOLOCAUST w/out words was put in her head. The unknown, wait-what?...then. The gamit "from-too" inevitable acceptance. Lambs too?
Pink is perfect as always thanks for your action. I’m a new subscriber six-year-old white man having fun. Listen to Pink Floyd like I always did sitting in my bed late at night in the 70s with my headphones on with my parents thought I was sleeping thanks mom and dad for that sad ass Sansui stereos.
Named in homage to two old black blues musicians from North Carolina, USA, "PINK Anderson and "FLOYD" Council. The band as drawn to their raw, blues sound. No other band like them to compare them with, the cerebra band of rock & roll!
The best thing to do is listen to the track within its album setting. Listen to the whole album in one go. Lay on the couch, put your headphones on and close your eyes until its finished.
Everything already said. Album version is even better. Clare Tory was a session singer brought in for an afternoon, paid £30, given no real guidance apart from no words. She did it in a couple of takes and left feeling she had done a bad job. Now she’s music history. She later caught and got a writing credit for it so she ended up with more than £30.
At the end of the song, at 7:40 in your video, you say: "Not many lyrics..." Sometimes words are simply not enough to express the emotions experienced by a person, having to face the worst moment of their life. This song is a cry from the heart, which calls out to the listener's heart.

By definition, not really lyrics. Those were spoken recorded responses to questions written by Roger Waters and given to people who happen to be working or visiting the Abbey Road studios one day. They added selected responses throughout the album in the spots they thought worked best.
This song always brings tears to my eyes. My own opinion, if you can believe it, is that the original album track is better. Do yourself a favor and listen to it too, then decide for yourself. On the studio version, it is sung by one vocalist, Clare Torre. It's a very special treat either way.
The world and his dog knows Claire Torrey did the original studio version but this is a reaction to this particular live performance and for what it's worth I do prefer Sam Brown
Claire's version is fantastic, but if I'm choosing based on voice and tone, I'm going with PULSE. Sam Brown's chops here are next level, as are Claudia's and Durga's.
This video always gives me chills. Yes, it is about the five stages of death. Sam Brown does Denial and Anger (superbly). Durga McBroom does Barganing and Depression (what a voice) and Claudia Fontaine (no one could have done it better) does Acceptance. Three of the best female voices ever. Sadly, Sam Brown, the blonde singer, lost her singing voice. But I am happy to have recently read that she has regained her singing voice! You go girl! Oh, and by the way, I am sipping a single malt scotch. ;-)
For no lyrics and a great groove see Rush "YYZ" And yes I'm a Floyd junkie. Listen to the entire album from start to finish and have more than just some sips. (doobie also while listening, if it's not against your ethics). After that you'll probably want more sips and more Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd and these lovely backup singers are very cool. And so are you guys. Thanks for sharing your enjoyment of good music with us.
Beautiful

Pulse 1994 at earl's court London. Was there.
I grew up with this band and album among so many others. It was a time of music magic and mayhem.
Pink Floyd is one of my favorite bands.

this is a three part song. fear of dying, coming to the realization of dying, and accepting death as a blessing.
beautifully said.
