      Hi Brook and victor am a truck driver from fort lauderdale and i enjoy a lot watching your fishing videos, they really made my trips fun. Brook this happen to my 2002 proline sport 27ft gas tank last year and now i have some soft spots on the floor, salt water do alot of damage starting with the gas tank and ending in electric problems and wood damage , I see you guys keep the boat on the water, dry the hull interior with fresh water at least 2 time's a week and let the bilge pumps run for at least 20 or 30min to take the salt water out of the hull and believe me you guys goin to spend less money on the future

    rtv and a short sheet metal screw is better than patch jbweld just say in!!!
    nothing holding that patch down or 1 " square sheet metal with 1/4 hole in middle coat with marine white rtv then put screw thru hole then into tank screw down never mess with again no new tank something made the holes and then some body tried patching

      Looks like salt water corrosion on the tank top. Great idea on replacing the tank. The worst thing that can happen on a boat is a fire. If the JB weld doesn't stick, I would go with the short SS sheet metal screw with rtv, or JB weld. The screw is a mechanical fastener that will hold the patch is place for a while, till you get the replacement gas tank.

    You’re super lucky with the access you have to the tank. My fuel tank goes under the console. Also, store the boat slam full with gas, keeping it at half leaves an air gap where air and moisture can corrode the metal tank.

    Holes in the top of the fuel tank are a good source of water contamination too. I hope you get a new tank. Fishing is fun but you have to earn that by doing boat projects. I think I'll have some custom canvas work coming your way in a couple of years. My $1 Catalina C-25 was delivered to my back yard today. I haven't even climbed up into the cockpit yet. I see a whole lotta boat projects in my future.

    Don't underestimate the danger of these leaks. Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and it is explosive. I would not run that boat at all. Sorry for the bad news but you are taking quite a risk using a tank like that especially since i am sure you realize that there are most likely other areas of the tank that while not actively leaking may be bad and cannot be seen.

    You should put a stainless steel screw in before you patch it.

    • @DeeCeeTheGreat
      @DeeCeeTheGreat 5 років тому +1

      I was thinking a stainless steel screw with some 5200 all over the threads and a flat washer, :)

    • @redpillcommando
      @redpillcommando 3 роки тому

      I'm not sure about this. I know from bitter experience that stainless steel and aluminum don't play nice in salt water. A few years back, I was using two brand new aluminum tanks on my rebreather. I dive a sports kiss with a stainless steel case. The tanks were strapped to the case with metal bands and my dive buddy told me that when I was in the water the tanks were fizzing like alka seltzer tablets. I checked and sure enough, I had little corrosion pits all over my tanks. I fixed it by slipping plastic tubing over the tank straps and making sure both tanks were electrically isolated from the case. However, I will admit that I am far from being a fuel tank expert. A new fuel tank is much safer.

    Those two holes might not have been leaking much liquid fuel, but they were venting plenty of vapor into your bilge. That's a super dangerous situation, and quite honestly the best thing about outboard vs. inboard power (you get more margin for error in a situation like this since you don't have a heat and spark producing beast beneath your feet.)

    those holes are due to electrodes eating away at metals on your boats. check your zinc pencils in your engine and zinc plates. could be a lose screw in the gas tank causing it or a fish hook even....

    Love these kinds videos. I don’t have a boat myself, and actually that’s partially due to the fact that I’m scared of getting one - I can’t afford a new boat, so I’d buy used, and since I’ve never had a boat I’m afraid of the problems and pitfalls (everyone always uses that BOAT acronym $$$) but videos like this make me realize that not everything is the end of the world - it can be fixed with the right knowledge and some sweat equity.

    i just replace the tank on my 20 ft century is from 2000 , every 20 years should replace the tank because it gets corroded giving the fact that the aluminum they are made of is just 1/8 thickness so it gets thinner and when you fill up the tank this is what happens because heat and vapor expand the tank and eventually cracks and release from the thinner corroded areas of the tank , so if using that tank while waiting for new one just keep it have way filled by the way we (family) love to see your guys videos especially my little boy , we learned from Victor and Brooked we can say

    Aluminum corrision. I fight this often in my flounder gigging boat. Dissimilar metals causes and continuous contact with salt causes.
    Right now you are dealing with spots you can see. There are likely more spots you cannot see on sides and bottom of tank. They may not be leaking now but they may soon leak. You dont want to take a chance of gas leak on a boat. Only takes a small spark. Remember with gas it is the fumes that burn, not the liquid.
    Replace the tank, preferably with one that will not corrode iin future. Fiberglass or epoxy paint coating.
