There's a fan patch for this game that makes it so every character has their own theme playing during fights against them in story mode, which I'd recommend because otherwise you're just listening to Reimu's theme eighty times in a row.
I'll provide some extra information on how the Story Mode fights actually work here. There's a hidden value in the game that increases whenever you perform the following actions: Killing enemies = 1 Killing spirits = 5 Blocking pellets = 5 Getting kills while the combo is high = 10 Using a skill (C2) = 20 Sending an Ex (C3) = 300 Sending a boss (C4) = 350 Once the value reaches a specific preset threshold, the game will automatically trigger the next "phase" of a stage, which will be to send either an Ex or a boss onto your screen. Once you get through all the preset phases and defeat or timeout the last boss phase of a stage, the enemy is immediately defeated. Reimu is probably the single easiest shot in the entire series to get LNN with. Her C2 clearing bullets and dealing obscene amounts of shotgun damage means that you get to just sit in front of bosses and decimate them before they get to fire anything threatening. I cleared her LNN in just 9 minutes...
The boss sprites got a major update only because ZUN got Tasofro to chime in on the danmaku visuals for once. I don't think I've seen a few sprite for an old character in a long time done by ZUN, he's been using that Reimu since PoFV. That being said, ZUN or not, the update is welcome. I feel like wishing for a new versus shmup was the monkey's paw wish. This game is just as good as it is Weird and honestly most of that is in the story mode. Glitches galore, some horribly imbalanced characters, pretty much all the volatility you expect from a versus shmup, little danmaku of quality to my eyes, basically no traditional system or replays... At the same time incorporating some long due upgrades to the single player (having boss spells be a trigger to end a stage is something long fantasized... No need to beat bullshit AI to win) and a multiplayer that's good if you patch the netcode and instate a few bans... This game is a little fucked up and evil. It's probably my favorite since 16 though
I admit that Touhou 19 is fun but... I personally dont like how the story mode works compared to PoFV. That and the ability cards feeling like an afterthought lol
I adore the sprites provided by tasofro, Ran's tails look fluffy. It's a shame cuz one of the things that i love of touhou are the beautiful danmaku patterns, and sadly phantasmagoria games do lack them cuz it easily de-evolves into "dodge this rng sucker". Chimimōryō is basically a Chinese term for "all the monsters in the mountains and the rivers". This term was used in games before, but this is the first time it was left as is rather than being translated as "monsters in the rivers and mountains", probably because as a difficulty level it would look too long. On side note, IIRC ZUN changed the way images were stored in this game, so it took people a while to actually translate the "text as image" things.
to clarify, the person who made the opponent sprites were the sprite artists for the fighting games like ULiL, AoCF, and SFW or GI wachu call it. and it was amazing a part of Twilight Frontier made it to the OFFICIAL base game dannaku

So we're finally here, huh. This game is a doozy and a half. It's broken as hell, both in good ways and bad ways. The balance itself can be even both! Sometimes the balance is frustrating, sometimes it's funny. There's not really much I can talk about that hasn't been talked about either in the video or the comments, but there is still stuff that was missed, some more obvious than others. Charge is actually gotten from these small items, obtained from killing enemies (the higher the combo, the more items you get from each), as well as grazing/scoping or deleting bullets. Not only that, but this game actually has a Point of Collection for them, so you don't have to go pick them all up manually. Though they are more visible in some backgrounds than others. Explosions from enemy chains actually deal damage to bosses. Not every character can abuse it as well though, and not every wave is good do to it on, but it can be useful. Fun fact about lives and barriers: in the demo, you used to only have three lives, but they refreshed after every stage. (Demo ended after 3, as is traditional.) You also didn't have barriers at all, and I'm convinced they were only added in the final game because the balance of this game would make it fucking unplayable without them... Speaking of the demo, did you know the title screen used to have an Extra Story option? That's completely gone now. Hell, I think it was removed in v0.02? I forgot, but, that was also the demo version that added online PvP, since ZUN hadn't considered it at first, and was talked to about it by people like even his friend beatMARIO. Also, speaking of content that's gone, hooray, no replays... Sure as hell wish I was recording when I accidentally got Marisa LNN when trying to test how easy an LNB would be! Reimu's level 1 being underwhelming couldn't be any further from the truth. In PoDD, sure, they didn't deal that much damage at all, but in this game? Lay them on top of a boss and watch them crumble. Anyway, on Reimu, I'm not gonna lie, this game lowered my opinion of her a bit. She's so overpowered that it feels so blatantly intentional on ZUN's part, I really don't like this kind of favoritism. And no, this video doesn't scratch the surface, even if Omega was barely using level 2s at all. SUIKA GET THE FUCK OUT I SWEAR

Since the two Windows Phantasmagoria games have very chill and pleasant Reimu themes, something I've always wondered is if they were both originally composed as Stage 1 themes, which IIRC are the first songs ZUN composes whenever he starts making a new Touhou game. Perhaps when he decided to make PoFV and UDoALG versus shmups, he repurposed them both as Reimu's themes?

As a side note, I notice that you're playing the game as it is in base. It also fixes a few bugs that make characters really mean to control.

While she may be on a losing streak recently, you do have to remember that she did resolve every incident pre-HSiFS minus UFO, which is more games than HSiFS onwards, and certainly a much longer timespan in-universe than the time between this game and HSiFS. Besides, Reimu not being the one to canonically resolve a game's incident in recent games is a fresh development and allows characters like Marisa to at least resolve an incident rather than being the secondary character whose routes are non-canonical.
im a normal mode player and even i could beat story mode with reimu on lunatic with 2 misses and no bombs, very balanced game (you can also probably guess where the misses were...)
