  • 👉 My full beginner bass course: yeah.bassbuzz.com/mistakes
I’m gonna give you 5 tips to ditch the beginner bass mistakes that you're probably making.
Tip #1 is about avoiding the main mistake that beginners make with their plucking technique. I’ll give you a simple test to make sure you’re plucking like a pro.
Another big beginner bass mistake is worrying about gear too much. For Tip #2, I’ll show you why it doesn’t matter all that much, and that gear should never hold you back from sounding legit and moving forward with your playing.
Next up, Tip #3 will make sure you don’t have a case of ‘beginner-itis’ in your fretting hand - can you guess what we’ll fix? (A lot of people miss this one without a good teacher, especially people coming over from guitar)
Tip #4 contains some important info about the ‘talent’ myth, and why you can TOTALLY learn bass even if you don’t think you can.
We’ll finish up in Tip #5 by dialing in your plucking tone even more, and playing some music together. I’m positive you’ll be able to integrate all these tips because we’ll apply them in context as you watch the video.
If you want more help avoiding beginner bass mistakes, learning bass essentials, and having fun, you can subscribe right here: yeah.bassbuzz.com/subscribe

I’ve been playing guitar for 25+ years and recently decided to learn some bass, properly. Not just picking single notes in place of corresponding powerchords, but learning the instrument and the vibe. Naturally, us guitarists assume we’re superior to bass players...🤣 Gotta say... we’re not, and it doesn’t take long when a guitarist decides to really learn bass properly that there is some guidance needed, and I’m loving your vids. i dont understand what the big deal is :/ i play both guitar and bass yea theyre different, but bass you have a lot more room to make mistakes with finding your strings, i mean each string is like 1 mile apart from each other, compare this to the guitar and it doesnt take long before youre skipping octaves all over the fretboard on opposite strings, you also only have 4 strings, and the strings are huge (Seriously man how could you miss them) also i play bass with my finger pick, its basically an invisible pick i make my fingers like im holding a pick, BUT the difference here is there is no plectrucm/pick on my fingers and i just hit the strings with my nail, and no it doesnt sound like a woman is playing the bass because idont use my index and middle finger with my nail down rubbing against the strings (which sounds like nails on a chalkboard) i use only the index finger part of the nail to rub against the strings which creates a more pleasing growly tone on precision basses and a nice fret buzzy sound on jazz basses, and the same way i play the bass i play my guitars, and if i want to do some fast tripple picking like on the song iron maiden the trooper i just move that invisible pick faster i dont change my style, people at a music store are like "do you need a plectrum" im like "naaa i have my own" *proceeds to take out an invisible plectrum*

Squiers are great instruments. You don't need an expensive bass but do invest on a tuning pedal and a setup to take care of fret buzz, extremely high action and pickups, and an amp that doesn't buzz at low volume (where most of your practice will happen). If possible try plugging in different outlets around the house as some may have grounding issues. A dirt pedal, even as a beginner, will also improve your sound and make it immensely more fun to play which means you'll practice more. I recommend a Boss SD-1, TC Dark Matter or EHX Flat Iron to start. Without getting too technical, even at low drive setting most dirts will boost your mids and compress your signal, which makes everything sound closer to how most music we listen to is recorded.

Like the bass clarinets or baritones or something are always like ‘we are never appreciated’, but come on we have it a lot worse😂 it’s probably because not all school bands have basses...

exactly what i was looking for man, I hope for all our sake you have a lot of videos. Hard to find fundamentals lessons for new bass players. I know from other instruments that this kind of stuff is so important to get right at the beginning! going to do a deep dive of your videos now :D
When I got my (admittedly shitty and cheap, not even a squier level) bass guitar, I was really worried because I'm using DI, no amp and the sounds of the fretting and plucking are SO sensitive I thought it was unusable, you've already got me sounding much better. I think because the pickups are so cheap and it doesn't sound the best, the only way to get any decent sound out of it is to be extremely sensitive with plucking. If I lose concentration for a second and pluck without the exact right angle / energy it clangs out almost sounding like an electric guitar string.
Anyway, thanks a lot, hope there is much more to come!

    • @BassBuzz
      @BassBuzz  4 роки тому

I doubt it's the pickups, the sound (probably) has more to do with your technique, and what you're listening through. Playing through DI/headphones is gonna be brutal as a beginner, amps sound way better and you'll be happier even with a cheap-ish amp, IMO.
      Glad you're digging the videos!

This might not influence you but along my tiny but proud music career I learned that gear in fact does not mean a sht. Our small city lacks of musician amount, so we stuck with what we have. We have a old AF strange guy who plays keys. He has like 70 euro bought from pawn shop keyboard. The way he plays makes everybody think that this is some kind of a shitton expensive nord stage keys. He does not need to change his keys, he does a godlike job with them. Why ever bother?
If you play crap instrument, use shit gear and still produce at least decent sound, then you would reach unreachable heights when using expensive gear. This does not translate to poor playing skills. You going to sound little bit less shittier if you use good gear, but you are still shit so who cares? Better to start with average gear for starters. Something cheap but decent too. Nowadays Harley Benton is one of leading cheap gear sellers and IN FACT their gear sometimes is incredible. I have HB bass amp for 80 euros and Ashdown for 350 euros. There is difference but calling it significant would be same as saying dumb stuff. Price on the other hand... The same characteristics Fender Rumble 80 would send me back by approx 300 euros but trust me it would never sound quite like my HB. Cheap quality gear - the bargain of century.

I really love these videos. As a long term guitar player trying to combat the boredom of the pandemic induced isolation, I've satisfied a long term desire of mine and bought a Fender Squire Bass. I mean, it's 4 strings, how hard could it be for a seasoned guitar player to learn? Your videos are super helpful. And yes, I won't suck forever :) Thanks, Josh!

Do it. You'll appreciate tempo and timing structures better for it, which will help you with every instrument. (Looking at you, lead guitarists who cant seem to find the beat that me and the drummer have been methodically laying out for you to play with over and over the whole practice sesh)

Hello fom Norway😀 I ordered my first bass guitar to day, an Ibanez gsr 200. I'm 56 years old, so it's maybe crazy to start learning to play an instrument at my age ? But i love music, and have lots of spear time so i give it a try. When being a child, i learned the cello for about four years. But this was at my parents demand, so sadly i ended it due to(at that time) lack of love for the instrument. After finding your channel, i will follow your teaching to try to learn playing my new bass. I like to build valve audio amplifiers, so i will try to build my own bass amp. Looking forward to try following your teaching. Thank you.

Really enjoyed this, more importantly it is basically important bass info. And delivered in a light-farted way, so positively. As to the gear aspect: years ago I re-signwrote a Fender logo on my friends old Hondo bass. At his next gig, everyone complimented him on much better his "new" bass guitar sounded. Practice is the discipline that makes the difference, for me at least 15 minutes every day or longer is the key. Not an hour on a Thursday afternoon type of attitude. Just regular stuff. Thanks sincerely Josh!

HAHA that's an amazing story Stu! Reminds me of a Lee Sklar story about his "producer switch," which he would flip when producers asked him to get a different bass tone. He'd flick the switch, change his right hand position, and they'd love it... but the switch wasn't wired to anything. At all. I've always loved that story. :)
