The fact that he asked if he was okay and the rookie said, “Yeah. I wasn’t hit or anything,” and then the state trooper said, “No. Are you okay”? He knew it was an intense situation and the rookie was struggling with having to fire.

Or maybe that was just the secret all along. Boys are so self-assured from such a young age I have found. I have 3 sons and a daughter and they were *vastly* different. When my daughter is certain of something, I am certain as well. I even have “Certainty” tattooed on my wrist to remind me to be more like her. When my boys are “certain” of something, it is a toss up as to how successful they will be lol. Could just be our family though. I’m an only child with no contact with my family so what do I know! 😅

I've seen the Trooper in videos from two other UA-cam sites, and he always meets the highest standards, but his concern, compassion, and reassurance given the officer was an example of what truly makes the Arkansas State Police a top agency. Most of all, the first 9-1-1 caller is a prime example of how to remain calm & clear while relaying vital information necessary to get the incident handled fast and safely. I'm grateful no civilians were injured, that the K9 handler & officer recovered, with no other officers injured, and finally, that the suspect has been adequately sentenced for his actions. I hope that while serving his sentence, he can receive the mental health services he sorely needs.

Thats gotta be such a tough thing to go through. Obviously it HAD to be done though because the criminal proved (through shooting the ground) that he would hurt those officers if not stopped. I cant imagine the emotions the officer must be feeling as he wonders if he killed the guy. Hopefully they got him some mental health counseling and some time off.

I was trained in Critical Incident Debriefing and at first of course we were met with the tough guy resistance which we totally understood but eventually it really was a great tool for all of us. Sometimes I was on the debriefing side and sometimes as a Paramedic I was involved in the traumatic incident. I'd imagine his body language would be clear as day. The way the story was re-told and his tone of voice.
Tis a lovely thing - the ability to what if? Could it have been avoided? Did I make the right choice?
Did you read the signs correctly?
Eg the shotgun shot would have been triggered by the reflex of being shot (finger jerking)
You can't truly know the intent, the fella might've merely raised it and not used it, with finger at the ready.
At least I know I would question my choice. What if the officer with the taser responded quicker? Did I fire too many shots to incapacitate? Would half as many have sufficed?
Needless to say though, a good outcome. Versus some of the stories you see around.

As a nurse, I must say that we are legally obligated to treat the most critical patient first and foremost in these cases! Many of us don't like it but in this field, we are faced with things we don't like and don't particularly agree with often! We MUST do our jobs because we signed up for this! It sucks that they had to treat the person that caused all this before an innocent, injured, officer received his treatment. When licensed to save lives, that license didn't come with a personal preference of who we want to save and when. It came with an obligation to treat each of our patients with dignity, respect, and empathy. During a trauma, our personal feelings DO NOT matter. We put all our attention on performing the skills we learned to save that patient's life! When a patient is lying on the gurney in the middle of the trauma room, it doesn't matter if that patient is a homeless drug addict, a psychopathic murderer, a child molester, an inmate, a bank robber, or an abusive spouse. They are a patient and what they did in their lives to make them what they are labeled as DOES NOT MATTER! Legally and ethically we have to provide them with the same level of care we would provide to one of their victims. Sometimes it doesn't seem fair but after you've done this for a while fairness is not a top priority. We do our jobs within our scope of care and if a patient requires further treatment/care we ensure they get that extra level of care.
The person narrating this video used an important word when explaining who received care first. That word was TRIAGE which is an important part of emergency room care. If a patient comes in with a stomach ache, nausea, and vomiting, then another patient comes in with mild to moderate back pain, and then another patient comes in with a bad laceration, each of these patients will be triaged. The patient with the higher acuity will always be treated first.

A shame the state trooper had to be the one to finally come over and reassure the rookie cop who just shot a man. His own sergeant sure didn't seem to care much about how he was doing. smfh. . .

Sergeant was doing a bosses job at a crime scene…not the best time to care about his feelings.

You're just a cowardly cop hater who knows nothing about policing. The Sargent has to make sure things run correctly. He's very busy making sure everyone is okay and getting the scene locked down. Get lost with your lies and cop hate.

@@nicefish10 He could have put another officer on the matter if he was too busy to do it himself. Leaving the guy basically alone like he was just seems wrong. Again, good on that state trooper for taking the time to ensure his mental state was OK.

I like how they help each other the way state trooper did. It sould feel great to be part of a "brotherhood" help each other, always there for each other mentally and emotionally.

This same type thing happened on the street where I grew up. An older man was off his medication & walked down my street shooting every person he saw. My mom & our 2 pups were outside preparing for a garage sale when he came walking by my house. She grabbed the dogs & laid flat hoping he wouldn’t see them. Thankfully they survived, but many of our neighbors didn’t nor did the shooter. It was a very traumatic situation. It’s terrifying to be minding your business & suddenly facing death due to a person who’s not mentally stable. So thankful the officer & pup made full recoveries.

The media doesn't reveal the level of responsibility most police officers carry on their shoulders. And they rarely report on all the times police do their job to a level of excellence that the average man on the street would not attain. Thank you for your insights.
