We west coast surf folks like to shoulder tuck or hip rest our rod butts. But in actuality, long butt rods are meant to be straddled, tucked safely next to our “sinkers” to help reduce elbow, shoulder fatigue.

How exciting is this video? I am giddy with excitement! I had bought a Rockaway reel a few months ago and just last month bought a Rockaway RH 12' rod so I was very excited to see your input on these combos. I did notice you mentioned memory on the cast, you hit the nail on the head, so far I am casting higher than farther, the rod tip is a bit stiff so I have to change my cast release to gain distance. I will say this was also my first fishing trip on the Heybike Brawn, which worked well in the sand. Keep up the GREAT work Edward, we are rooting for you brudder!

Hey Hook2Cook - just viewed this vid! Lots of stuff to like... first, love your "Shop" button that pops up during the vid (how'd you do that?); 2) your comments are always insightful and you your content is always well-planned which are enormously helpful and educational - anyone should get excited to get out on the surf once viewing your vids; 3). great idea about removing a few inches from the bottom of the butt... a friend of my father in-law built a custom rod for men when I got back into the surf.... starting with a 10' Calstar blank (fiberglass back in the 90's!), he removed 1-foot of the bottom blank for a 9-ft rod. Man, that was a durable and beautiful rod. It could handle up to 6 oz and heavy surf (Pt Reyes North Beach and South beach) and easily handled any striper in the surf. The reel seat was place a bit lower to in order to take advantage of the rod's backbone. It sat on my hip comfortably with the rod tip not too high...and the tip was very sensitive...
I was so used to heavy surf gear of any Dad's generation... Filipino, raised in Hawaii...came to the mainland after being discharged after WWII.... so, I am really looking forward to that future vid! I am hoping to get down towards your neck of the woods this summer as I slide into semi-retirement.... love all your vids and the sense of Ohana you bring to the community you share in a selfless way!
I am 63 and my bother is now approaching 70, but youthful in our minds! I want to take him down to SLO environs.... pretty much know which beaches to check out but any suggestions on rockfish locations. We both have knee replacements so we don't "hop" as well aqs our days past... anyway - stay with your passions... they keep us alive! Peace bro... I make a decent pot of chicken adobo too.... any events planned down there this summer? ok - out for now... peace! Love and aloha to your crew!
    Matt

Wanted a good permanent match reel for my 1072 just like yours. Yes, I took your advice as a Stradic, but there are many out there. Choose the 20-model 4000 SW a Japan import hopefully dark blue. Just got the SP not used yet only a week. I watch all the time and love your videos and ideas.

I use a shorter rod tip section which is firmer for tossing into the wind. This way you have the original and a specialty condition tip. Fly rod anglers do this with rods quite often, just adapting the same for the surf conditions. Nice striper, that's a true blue striper will full lines vs the hybrid variety

The SP version of the rockaway I found to be a little light and too parabolic. I do however love the regular rockaway rods. I had the sp and regular, and returned the sp for a lighter version of the regular rockaway for surf fishing.

I think the Rockaway SP 11’ would be rad for cut bait and weight on the reef for rock fish. I’ve been looking for something that weighs less for that. Might be perfect if it’s really durable.
As soon as I picked up the rod in my hand I could tell I wouldn’t want to use it for sandy beach fishing. Too fast action imo. And overkill power wise IMO.
The Hawaiian custom is hard to beat on the sandy beach. Ed casts so far with that rod, and it lands fish. I’m now experimenting with the Okuma SST 10’6” M to see how it compares. 👏🎣🐟

I remember you being a big proponent on using the phenix trifecta lite. Its been fun watching you now gravitate to stronger surf gear. What do you think about shorter lighter setups such as 7'3" inshore rods? I am currently looking at Zenaq Fokeeto Twitch and the Century Weapon Mag. Do you or any of your viewers have any experience with these rods?

    • @Hook2Cook
      @Hook2Cook  6 місяців тому

It’s been a gravitation to maximizing distance it seems. No other rod can launch a 5/8 oz bait with consistency as effortlessly as the Hawaiian custom. If I’m throwing shorter rods it’s usually a casting setup for the control of a heavier bait. Only experience with century I’ve had are 12 and 14 footers in Cabo for rooster fish casting 4 oz plugs

The okuma sp is a MF it is stiff in the middle and it feels exactly like a stiff wip on the hooksets and casting you can only flick it not wip it out there to get the longest distance the best weight to get out the farthest is 30 grams or 1oz

They say that if you’re going let the fish go, then you shouldn’t grab or stick your fingers in the gills. This actually damages the fish’s gills. This is how the fish breathes and how the fish obtains oxygen.
Let’s not hurt any fish so that way we can catch it again next time ok.
Great day of fishing. God is great

I actually started off with a Rockaway SP before the Hawaiian custom. I use the Rockaway as more of a finesse rod...casting from jetties or anywhere where there is a distinct danger of snagging with rocks poking out of the water. The HC rod I use mostly for open beaches and for the most part with a C-Rig or sometimes I post it with a fish finder rig to let it sit a bit (has to be a calm day though). I do use plugs for both rods..just seems easier with the Rockaway yet doesn't get a much distance as the HC using the same effort. Overall I bring both rods with me at all times...both are good.
