I'm curious to the reason for the existence of "tractor hydraulic fluid" (THF) and if a more standard hydraulic fluid could or should replace it. THF seems to span a range from generic mystery liquids right through to Chevron industrial products. I'm only talking about hydraulic systems here, not the shared use of "universal tractor fluid" in transmissions, differentials, and hydraulics.
It seems to be a very one size fits all fluid for many tractors from the 1950s through today. Maybe the main goal is only cross compatibility when farmers start sharing and changing implements that operate from the tractor hydraulic pump.

Hi great video, first channel I've found that has in depth information on hydraulic oil! Where have you learned all this info on oil?

Thanks so much! Got some experience as a lubrication engineer so seen a pretty broad spectrum of applications over the years. There's literally infinite topics to cover, but we'll try to get a few more hydraulic oil videos done.

Hi nicely explained.. can you tell us the name of oil which pass this Bosch rexroth test?

There are quite a few that do, but at the time I believe that Mobil DTE 10 Excel was the only Zinc free hydraulic oil that had passed. Being able to withstand the wear test without the advantage of a ZDDP antiwear system is very challenging. But not having ZDDP in the formulation helps reduce deposit formation.

I didn't understand the need of FZG test for hydraulic oil. Can you please elaborate it little bit. Thank in advance.

It isn't really needed for hydraulic actuators, more for auxiliary systems that might also be lubricated by the hydraulic oil. For example, the oil pump for a hydraulic system could be a geared pump that requires scuffing resistance, or there may be bearings.

Could you add zddp 1200 ppm to chevron regal r&o 68 turbin oil and then use it in chevron rando hdz 68 application

Hello, the current ambient temperature is -4 Deg Celsius and we had used CT-68 oil. At low temperature the oil fails to function. Can you please suggest hydraulic oil grade which we can use to solve this problem. Viscosity range 32 to 220 cSt

Depends on the failure mode. If the oil is no longer circulating at low temperature you may need to go to a 32 grade. Alternatively look for a product with a lower pour point.

I have an LS MT342SHC Tractor which is a servo valve controlled HST hydraulic system. It calls for 32/46 hydraulic fluid. Which would be the best fluid to use in it? Is there a full synthetic, zinc free VSI hydraulic fluid you would recommend?

    Hello ,rafe
Can are we use engine oils instead of hydraulic oils or no ???
Are there a difference between hydraulic oils and gear oils ??
    Thanks in advanced

Depends on the application really. There are some hydraulic oils that are basically cut-back engine oils, but it's not ideal.

Yes, these are the sort of issues I was hoping would be explained in the video.
