    Onkyo actually addressed their hdmi chips overheating and failing early (taking down the whole unit)!

      @@DavidSusiloUnscripted Hello, I knew it but I wanted to be sure. Thank you for your help. I am interested in this Onkyo because I have an Onkyo 9130. I had Cambridge cx81, naim 5si, Rega Elex and Elicit, Musical Fidelity, Audiolab 6000A, etc. One day I read an article, very rare, which talked about the Onkyo 9150. The tester could not believe the quality of the sound of this amp and even more when he saw its price. A year later he tested the lower model, Onkyo 9130 and there he did not understand how a lower model sounded better than the 9150. I bought both and compared them to some models that I mentioned above. I didn't believe it, the 9150 was excellent but where I was surprised is the 9130. It's the model I still have.
      That's why I'm interested in this new onlyo TX8470 but also in the new Integra DTM-7.4, very similar. For a little more money I can have an Arcam AS30. So I'm waiting

    Excellent review!! Dear expert, please I need your valuable advice. I want to buy a stereo amplifier again. I recently sold an Onkyo TX 8260 because I felt that it lacked power, and the volume began to increase after 50% of its initial level. It is important to make it clear that the sound was good and clear. I need the new amplifier for music (Jazz, Rock, Metal), but I can't decide between the amplifier in your review, the Onkyo TX 8470, and the Denon DRA 900 amplifier. Which of these two do you recommend according to your personal opinion?

    • @DavidSusiloUnscripted
      @DavidSusiloUnscripted  19 днів тому +1

      I personally would choose the Onkyo over Denon. I never liked the sound Denon amplifiers in the last decade.

      @@DavidSusiloUnscripted I have the IntelliVolume feature on my TX-8555 STEREO receiver, which is why I asked. It's not geared strictly towards home theater; it's meant as an input source adjustment, regardless of application.

    I love the aesthetics of Onkyo gear, and this one is no exception. The problem is that, like other modern two channel amps/receivers, there's no Tape In/Out jacks to connect a CD recorder (forget about a Tape 2 loop/monitor for an EQ) and then the strange decision to label one of the inputs "Tape/TV."
    Who at Premium Audio Group thought THAT was a good idea??
    I'm going to stick with my TX-8555 until it's on its last breath.
    * On a side note, I have a Tascam CD burner very much like yours, but it's the slot loading model, and I still use it. What do you have that connected to via the Onkyo, David, since there's no Tape In/Out for recording?

    • @DavidSusiloUnscripted
      @DavidSusiloUnscripted  Місяць тому

      I use the recorder to record 2-ch mixdown from my late multi channel recorders. I hardly use it for recording anyway. I purposely bought that version because I have slot loading. They tend to eventually scratch the edges of the discs. :(

    • @MikeMargolis-j8f
      @MikeMargolis-j8f Місяць тому +1

      @DavidSusiloUnscripted Yeah, I hate the slot loading decks myself....wish Tascam never made them. I also made the mistake of running a laser lens cleaning disc with brushes through it, so it's almost impossible to load or eject a disc now.

    • @DavidSusiloUnscripted
      @DavidSusiloUnscripted  Місяць тому +1

      Yikes !!! :( :( the Tascam recorder I missed buying is their MiniDisc recorder. They are now selling at crazy prices.

    • @MikeMargolis-j8f
      @MikeMargolis-j8f Місяць тому +1

      @@DavidSusiloUnscripted Yes, I didn't know at the time that those cleaning discs with the brushes aren't supposed to be used on slot loading recorders or players ... apparently screws them up.😡
      I never used anything other than cassettes and CD-Rs for recording; the lack of tape inputs and outputs on modern amps and receivers is a concern because without them, there's no way to record analog signals going through the system.

    The front panel is plastic or aluminum ?

    • @MikeMargolis-j8f
      @MikeMargolis-j8f 5 місяців тому +1

      I was wondering the same thing. Most amps that aren't flagship models are aluminum looking; I have a predecessor of this receiver, the TX-8555, and it's built VERY well for it's price class. Real aluminum front face and heavy, smooth volume knob. Plus, 100 watts per channel. I would consider this Onkyo if mine dies, for my two channel system.

    Andrew Robinson's review of this model was excoriating... or rather, it was death by a thousand cuts... he used words like, "shouty". Since I'm currently thinking of purchasing one, your review was the balm I needed to thoroughly experience to begin to heal from those cuts; I'll assume you would not you use the derogatory "shouty" term with reference to the sounds produced by the OnkyoTX-8470? Thank you so much. -L.

    • @DavidSusiloUnscripted
      @DavidSusiloUnscripted  Місяць тому +2

      I can’t comment much about Andrew Robinson. He doesn’t have any background in audio production or audio design, yet he carry himself as if he’s the authority in audio. There is yet a single audio review from him that is truly objective without any conjencture or subjectivity.

      @@DavidSusiloUnscripted I'm going to assume you meant: "There is NOT yet a single audio review from him that is truly objective without any conjecture or subjectivity." Because if you didn't mean to add NOT, that would beg the question, What IS that single audio review that is truly objective etc.?

    David,
    Have you seen the new pieces Onkyo announced at CES this year? First, they unveiled their revised logo, which basically just spaces out the letters O N K Y O (totally unnecessary), and then they showed three new high end hifi products - a preamp/power amp (with meters) and an integrated. Boy, is this new design language they're using to "rebrand" their image ugly (IMO)... instead of the industrial looking brushed aluminum faceplates and brawny, beefy chassis elements Onkyo was known for, these pieces look "softer" with plastic-esque center mounted volume knobs that are just plain off-putting. I don't know what Premium Audio/Voxx was thinking with these redesigns at $2K a piece, but this isn't a good direction for the brand.
    As such, the stereo receiver you reviewed here is the alternative for folks like me who value the classic Onkyo aesthetic, but it just doesn't offer what equate to deal breakers for me - the IntelliVolume input leveling system (even more important for two channel gear than for home theater) and tape in/out connections for the CD recorder (as we've spoken about in the past).
    I truly hope this design language doesn't trickle down to their AV receivers, because then I'd truly lose my Onkyo brand loyalty.
    Fortunately, I'm not in the market for a replacement of my TX-8555 just yet...
    Looking forward to your thoughts!
