    I've been working with Unreal for about two years, and as many who use it for filmmaking, have avoided the game aspects as much as possible--I second what he said about actually learning it. It really slowed me down to fight that aspect rather than incorporating it. This is an awesome video and resource, Josh, thank you!!!

    This dude is giving up the sauce. Been struggling to create a curriculum for myself but 100% agreed when you said don’t waste time learning modeling. That’s what’s so insane abt unreal are all the free assets that can get you up and running as a filmmaker

    I started at the same time as you did, February of 2022 to make films myself. Your work is so good man, and inspiring! I share a ton of these lessons as well. Im now full time working on different productions, and my own now. Heres to a huge 2023!

    So hard for me to hear not to waste time modeling because I love doing it! yet learning Unreal on top of extending my modeling knowledge seems tedious. Yet having both skills under my belt seems paramount!

    I finally started to learn unreal for vfx, thanks for the great tips man! You are absolutely right about the importance of learning the game part of unreal, i though i could just skip those but they are really important for animations! I'm looking forward for your tutorials on what you have learnt so i don't make the same mistakes! Gotta be a exciting realtime year! :)

    Great video! That stage in Vancouver sounds awesome, but I know I would never be able to shoot there, haha.
    What is the wireless transmitter you are using for your vCam? I build a VCam for my mocap project, but I find the latency on most wireless stuff I buy is too high, so I end up just looking at my computer monitor when I capture.

    • @JoshToonen
      @JoshToonen  Рік тому +2

      I used the Hollyland HDMI transmitter. There’s still latency but I ended up looping and practicing a few times to be ahead of the latency. Here’s a link
      amzn.to/3WZLd9Z
      I’ve heard on Avatar Way of Water they would playback at half speed because of the latency and that worked!

    @0:04 - yes!!! finally someone who says it! And UE5 tutorials that they put out are absolutely no assistance for instruction to someone who has never been a "gamer" or has touched any software other than AutoCAD or SketchUp Pro in almost 15 years. ~that being said, I'm looking forward to your videos in this playlist.

    • @BingGeaux
      @BingGeaux Рік тому

      @2:56 - "don't waste time modeling" perfectly said because that is exactly what I've been doing - wasting time - with modeling in UE5. It is ONLY a frustration. UE5 might make some visually pristine aesthetics, but it has no way to make things architecturally accurate with any kind of ease - even in fantasy architecture. I'm better off sticking with SketchUp Pro and exporting with Datasmith or sync with Datasmith to UE5.
      Currently as a side job, I've been modeling a local casino and in UE5 what has taken me 4 hours to get a shell or façade I could do in 4 minutes in SketchUp Pro. And with more accuracy in SketchUp !! It doesn't matter that UE5 units are cm rather than standard inches. There are no measuring tools in Unreal. Oh, there are the details and parameters, but the dern gizmo/widget is always in the wrong place, snapping sucks royally, offset and scale don't work well, axis origins are always defaulted to the center ...my list goes on...let me continue with the video

    • @BingGeaux
      @BingGeaux Рік тому

      @9:01 - this is something I'd like to do, but the demands at work do not allow for any time spent in one of the editors for very long.

    • @BingGeaux
      @BingGeaux Рік тому

      @12:28 - this is the kind of video scenes I'll be doing here in the next few weeks.

      @22:50 - this form of exercise is exactly what we are currently going through at the office.

    Thank you so much for making this video and learned a lot. I'm in the same industry in Van, and seen the demand of UE is getting bigger and bigger. I am used to traditional ray tracing rendering engine but how would you actually discribe the difference between real time game engine? I played with UE and felt very different and there are so many gotchas but cannot discribe exactly. What happens if we just try export all the things from DCC tools into the UE and hit render? I know it does not work like Arnold or Vray but what's the road blocks you faced in the past? Thank you and please please keep added!
