We are in Braunschweig visiting Nicole's father... while here, we decided to share a trip around some of the oldest buildings in the city, and in Germany! While wandering around, Craig remembers enjoying a Turkish treat with Nicole over ten years ago, when he first visited the city - WOW! How time flies...
Many of the buildings we look at today, survived the bombings in World War 2 - a great deal of the city was destroyed - others have been and continue to be faithfully restored to their former classic style. We also found a very interesting fact about some buildings constructed 1000 years ago - the Jakob Kemenata we visit is one of only three remaining buildings of its type in the city. These buildings were constructed in two parts - a wooden framed front building, and a rear built of stone. The stone building could be heated - some were used as bowers to house animals, as well as human dwelling. But, the stone houses also offered a protection from fire - if the front of the building was attacked or caught fire, the residents could hide in the back for protection...
We will be back at the beach next week... until then - our best wishes to you all!
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

I absolutely loved this episode. Not only do I love ancient architecture, but my great grandfather came from Germany (and also my mom), and my family name is Michaelis! I was thrilled to see the Michaelis quarter.❤ Thank you.
Aww that's a fantastic coincidence ! How amazing
Scotland is beautiful with all of its architecture. I was in shock when you said the last building was built in the 1200’s. Nice tour glad you filmed ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜
Thanks so much Susan. This is in Germany, in my hometown or Braunschweig :) Nicole
@@scottishmudlarking sorry Nicole, it’s been one of those crazy days 😂😂😂
😂🎉😊 love this.
Loved the video. Nicole your hair is beautiful. You should wear it down more often. Thanks.
Aww thanks Sharon! My hair gets in the way in every day life ;)
Thank you for taking us along on the really nice and informative tour through Braunschweig
Thanks so much Rita! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Wow, thank you for sharing, really amazing the buildings have stood the rest of time.
They have all been lovingly restored :)
What a wonderful tour! Thank you for sharing. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow .. what a great video!! Thank you for taking us along on your trip. The architecture is amazing and the history to go with it was so interesting.
Thanks so much Sheila! It's always amazing to look at old buildings and walk over stone steps that are 1000 years old... imagine how many people have walked over them!
Such beauty in Germany. Amazing tour. But, I still think Scotland is more gorgeous ! 😊✌🏻💗🙏🏼
We haven't explored any castles in Germany yet and there are beaches too - but quite a bit away from Braunschweig :) Scotland is much more rugged but also colder ;)
What a beautiful place!
Aww thank you! It's Nicole's home town :)
Its insane how narrow and low many old European buildings are.
That's very true! I think the narrowest houses might be in the Netherlands!
Enjoyable tour! I can understand that building was old, but holy cow, 40 Euros for breakfast? O.o
Needless to say - we didn't go there for breakfast ! Bit pricey
Thank you for sharing your vacation! The old, old buildings are marvelous. It’s hard to wrap your mind around exactly how old they are, and the things they must have seen. Looking forward to being back on the beach ☺️❤️
It's always amazing walking on old stone steps that are 1000 years old... if the steps could talk and tell you about the people that walked them!!
The glass panes in the windows is interesting.
Thanks so much!
Certainly a lot of history attached to the city, worth the visit - no modern day graffiti(am I right Nicole)? Do they have a grade listing system in Germany, also?
I am sure there is some graffiti somewhere but mainly on concrete or under bridges. Yes these buildings are also protected and to restore them there are strict rules :)
Hope you had a great holiday in your home city 😍
Thanks so much! We did - it was sooo warm :) A proper summer!
Another great and interesting vid guys.❤
Thanks so much Richard!
@@scottishmudlarking I stay in aberdeen I used to love walking and fishing along the rivers dee and Don. Where I was brought up in summertime there is a stream or burn called the Denbury it would be interesting to walk back along that one day. I can guide you a little bit with its history.x
Oh my goodness this is an incredible video.
Reason number 1:
The beams.
I love old buildings with old beams.
The ,well I call it graffiti, but, presumably it’s woodworkers marks, that you showed at the beginning, wow!
Which leads me to number 2,the PATINA.
That old wood,I just want to touch the smoothness of it,that only comes with time,it is this funny way of verifying, with one’s hands, the very thing that you see with one’s eyes,it is a rare pleasure of the senses.
Thirdly, umm…wel, thirdly,I have forgotten,as I was mezmerized by a quick moment,a moment not needing to be bound by sea swept winds, hair allowed to lay free, across shoulders, allowing an observer to marvel at the otherwise hidden cascade that is Nicole’s hair.
It is delightful 😌
Oh I shall be purchasing one of your advent calendars again this year!
I will do so in about 3 days, when I have a free moment
Ohhh! I remember the third one!
The Kebab.
I love that you two got to share kebab from that same place from years ago.
A lovely couple,the two of you❤️
Aww thanks Charles! The old wooden beams sometimes have carvings with mottos in them ( usually about being devout ) . Even when the buildings get restored these are redone in the old style . Some carvings are dates like the ones in the Ritter that says , I believe , 1647 or so!
It's always amazing to walk over stone steps that are 1000 years old and to imagine how many people have walked over them. What conversations might have taken place next to the old city wall... ah if walls could talk!
I am sure you'll love this year's advent calendar as much as last years :)
PS My hair usually gets in the way at the beach with all the wind we have !!
Oh,is the Advent calendar available now?
I will pre order one ,if that’s the case.
And yes, clearly, you can’t allow your hair to be all whipping about,in the Scottish seashore winds😅
