Great video. I have a degree in Economics and I believe, it might be more important to understand the clients business requirements then to be an expert in Python. why I say that: looking for an education or training as a BA almost all courses or university programs focus on coding instead of understanding business data and solutions of real business requirements. Excel, SQL, Phyton ect. are just tools then, but if you don't understand the business problem in the first place, you cannot help your client.
That would be something given the more you interact with clients... you can spend months doing mock problems... which is cool.. but a relationship with your tools of trade in depth is not bad also.
So happy to find you! Thanks for the detailed overview. It's intimidating for me to approach the BI field maybe because these kind of jobs are used to have majority of males. Watching your videos are like the breath of fresh air.
Thank you, I'm in the process of selecting a degree and I have been wanting to aim toward business analyst when all is said and done and I intuitively THOUGHT I would be good at it but this video actually helped me to see it more clearly now im so excited 🥰
Thanks for this video, it really helped me understand what a business analyst does. I'm currently in college majoring in Information Technology with a focus on Data Analytics. Some of the things you explained in the video were concepts we learned in class. For example, I built a computer network and recommended software packages for business and explained why. Your video helps me because it's more in-depth. Thank you
Great video to understand the job of a BA. It would be great if you can share with us, which tools you use in your daily business and how you analyse the clients data, e.g. you mentioned Excel. Do you use a BI Software (Tableau ect) or doing coding in Phyton or R or using SQL? Your toolbox would be a great insight into data analyst daily job.
Thank you so much for this video, this will really help anyone to get into the head of a business analyst and understand what to improve and learn to be a better business analyst.
This is really interesting. I have a window cleaning & pressure washing business & really trying to standardise & systematise my business. This video is thought provoking!
I have been wondering what does a business analyst do, but I am now happy that I found this video. Thanks for everyone who helped make this available for everyone.
Good question! The answer really is different based on each case. With this particular case, some of that 80% product are easy to add on services. They have a good profit margin and add value to the total service options. Other ones we identified are too much time and effort with a low profit and so will be discontinued.
Hi Jen and @thecareerforce, since I was stuck just below BA level, I just started an intensive 6 month course in Belgium at The Master Labs. We both learn Business and Functional Analyst. I just tried the quiz and got 'lateral positions' as a result. I somewhat expected this. The thing is, I was looking for a guidance towards either FA or BA to start with, so I can learn deeper on one of those paths before starting. Do you have a secondary quiz (or 3th party quiz) that can answer this ? Thanks in advance.
I don't have any additional quiz and I'm not aware of any third party quiz that goes deeper. Both FA and BA are good options. With a FA focus, you're going to have more limited jobs that you have the skills for, but you're also going to be a better match for those jobs. With a BA focus, you'll have a wider variety of jobs, but won't necessarily bring a specialty that makes you stand out more. Hope this helps.
Glad I found this video. This is a career path I am looking to embark on so seeing how people actually do this job is so important so I would know what to expect day to day. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for making this video! Most of the other DITL BA videos I've seen are very tech-infrastructure focused. It was super beneficial to understand what a BA's role could look like in another industry.
A very helpful video to understand the day to day requirements and expectations of a BA role which by the way I am trying to look forward to working in. Thank you for posting!!
Great video! I am in college studying business analytics and plan to find work as a business analyst after graduation. I hope we can ge in touch to learn more about the field before I start working.
You guys, there is no specific degree that will get you directly into a job. If you're looking for what degree to get that is centered on context knowledge, then business, IT, and statistics could be a good degree for this career. But, there's been Business Analysts who have a wide range of degrees or even no degree.
Thanks, that was very informative. I've worked at a top financial institution for years and recently began thinking about what my next move within the organization might be. I've been recommended to consider a business analyst role but wasnt really sure what exactly it was. You've given me a lot of insight and thank you for that. Very interesting 😁 Liked, subscribed and hit the bell! Keep them coming!!!
Business analysis is not only a career; it is driven by passion and qualification.. lots of half literate engineers always circle around money and they start to bend towards what title offer more money. We find them saying - I want to do that. In reality they don't know a shit about that and neither 90 % of them are even qualified... if you ask them if they have any business degree to actually understand business ?? They will start giving some of highly lame answers. Most of half educated (or even less) engineers who don't like programming or want to earn more money tend to use these words as hiding the facts and pretend that they have real interest to become business analyst... While in real time on job they do nothing but System Analysis in name of business analysis and get things worse for organizations by zero value addition. - An observation based on two decades of journey in same field.
if you want to be a business analyst, which programming language should you first learn ? (I am new to any language) I googled this question, HTML , R , SQL, Python showed up. A bit overwhelmed, what should be my first step?
Excel, SQL,VBA and Python in that order. You need to know excel shortcuts and how to manipulate sheets quickly and effectively without having to search much on google. HTML is not needed.
I agree with soccerFP I got my BA job only knowing advanced excel and experience with power BI. SQL was the next thing I had to learn. honestly I have seen many people land at least junior analyst jobs with just advanced excel. So master that first
is the salary growth rate similar for business analyst and the data analyst? is it true BA has higher chances for the on site opportunities. My dream is to go the US. I wanted to work as a data analyst but i heard for onsite opportunities one should choose BA. need your perspective

Hi, I'm currently applying for a role as a business analyst apprenticeship in the UK. I've got experience in sales, marketing and customer service with some experience in learning the Tableau software... But my maths level is horrifyingly poor. Do you think I could still work as a business analyst and are there any great resources for what I need to learn to be ready for interview questions and on the job experience. 😇👍🏼 Greatly appreciated by the way!
Would you recommend going for a Diploma of Business Management + learning SQL + Tableau + Excel would be good to find a job entry level as a business analyst?
And I handle all the inventory for two warehouses, and when I started we were in a small office space. Find a company to grow with and you’ll be much happier than getting a cookie cutter degree to climb some bs corporate ladder.
Hi Jen, thank you for sharing your videos, I love all of them. May I ask what's the difference between business analyst and business operation analyst? thank you
Hey, I am an IB Y2 student and will begin my undergraduate degree in the second half of 2022. I love the job of business analyst and truly desire to be one. However, I am a bit confused in choosing the right degree for this career. Should I do a Bachelor of Economics degree OR Bachelor of Commerce degree (major in information systems, etc) Which would provide a more clear path to becoming a business analyst? Hope to receive a reply by anyone. Thank you🙏🏻
Question...when and how do you get your hands on the data dictionary for the database you are working with? Do it happen that an IT person would be able to get that for you or do you request it in a different way without bothering the client?
Sometimes I get it from someone in IT. Many of the companies I work with don't even have an internal IT department though. In those cases, I'll work with whoever in the client's organization that's most familiar with the data. Even when I get it from IT, I usually set up a short meeting with someone familiar with the data. It's not uncommon for the data dictionary to not fully document every practical aspect of the data that I'd like to know.
I work in IT after being an investigative analyst and an underwriter at an investment firm and a regular bank respectively. How good are my chances that I could wiggle my way into being a BA? I think it would be a better fit for me.
I was wondering if you can give your input on applying to Business Analytic grad programs. Does it matter the school you go to or is the curriculum you think is similar enough, to where as long as you get into a program you are good?
Hi Trehnt, business analysts don't just optimize operations . We first put in the work to understand what the people are trying to achieve out of the process. This is something I talk about on my channel as well: business analysts are not process driven, we are people driven. The big question we ask is what are the people using this process trying to do? Once we understand that, then we can truly design solutions that make their lives easier. Hope that helps!

Love this video! This is the prefect kind of stuff for a PhD student like myself planning on moving into data science /analytics career to get a feel for where I need to focus on my skill development. Are you planning on making more videos like this for a data science /data analyst type roles specifically? It seems like data science /analyst are just a more niche aspect of the stuff in this video and probably more common in larger companies where 'business analytics' captures a broad range of disciplines, apart of which are data scientists /analysts. Am I on the right track there?
What degree in college do you get to become a data business analyst? I see business administration with a minor in business analytics in the college near me but I want to make sure this equips me to become a data analyst.
Hello! I saw for one of your replies that you majored in math. The question is, do you have to be good at math to be a business anylst? At best I can complete calc work lol. This kinda worried me, how often do you use complex math?
Hi Jen, thanks for this informative video and the series! It sounds like something I could see myself doing. Are you self-employed and if so, how do you find clients? Have you made any other videos on that subject? Thx
I majored in Biochemistry. I’m trying to see if there is something else I can get into. What are some programs that you recommend learning to help for interviews that employers may want their potential hires to have knowledge of?
Advances excel/SQL/python/R/powerBI/tableu. Honestly I was hired as a business analyst with just advanced excel and power bi knowledge I learned everything else on the job
Hey Jen, Thank you for sharing this video. I had a question.. like I am pursuing a master's in business intelligence and digital marketing .. so business intelligence is somewhat related to business analyst. So. would you mind sharing how can I start with the internships or work under someone. I am not from an engineering background but seven working experiences with corporates as a customer consultant. PLease suggest.. Thank you
I'm not a fan of numbers, but am analytical/logical and use numbers a lot when thinking about personal financial goals and what time frame I need to accomplish those. I've been involved in sales for a while and have taken marketing and finance courses. I'm personable and enjoy a social work environment with more flexibility, I tend to think a lot as well about things; would i be considered a good candidate for business analyst role? I ask because I need to find a new job now and wanted to try something new, thank you
Same here, I’m an accounting major with almost 7 yrs of experience in finance field. Make me think of changing my career which I can create and give more inputs and benefits to my clients and stakeholders which I really find very interesting.
You mentioned doing "some coding work" and I'm interested to know a little bit more about that. I'm a business analyst looking to add coding to my skillset. What do you recommend as the best beginner coding tools?
@Dianah Spencer i am looking to move my career into Business Analyst, I've been doing some training and reading, what are the essential tools or skills to learn? what help or advice can you give in order to get a job as a Business Analyst.
Tbh you don’t need university although it helps, here in the uk you can take professional courses which are much cheaper alternatives and get you the same kinda job as you would uni
so most of the things i cannot understand but i am pretty sure now i am built in business analyst not a data analyst Thanks for clearing my thoughs about and More guidance from your side will be appreciated thanks
Hi Jen, First off, I would like to thank you for putting up videos like this. Almost all of the "day in the life of a data analyst / business analyst / data scientist" videos out there try to be vlogs - apparently, it is important to know that data / business analysts make cheap ramen. Your video is a goldmine of relevant information for people looking to transition into this field. I appreciate that. Now my question is: What underlying concepts and tools should I know if I want to be able to help a company "standardize and optimize their pricing and quoting system". Did you do most of the work in Excel? Did you end up using any statistical software? Any Machine Learning concepts?
I can't believe I missed the ramen-making part of my day! 🤦 Vlogs can be fun to watch, but it does seem like most job day in the life videos focus very little on the actual job. For this particular project which was working with a small company with a relatively small amount of data, I mainly used Excel. If I was working with a larger dataset or more complex inputs, I would have used a statistical software (probably Python, but there are many equally good choices) to analyze trends and additional factors affecting sales conversions. For mocking up a flow and explaining the new pricing process, I used Lucidchart (again, plenty of other comparable mindmap tools exist).
I do, but it depends on the project how detailed I get with it. If it's a project where I'm the sole person consulting a small business and I'm personally doing the project management, business analysis, and implementation, I'll usually keep it simpler and focused mainly on stakeholder understanding as a goal.
Hi :) I'm in Ireland and am looking to do an online course in BA. What type of traits does a BA need to have? I've been told it would suit me - that an Project Management. Can I ask, is it contract work/reliable/agency/full time?
Hello 🙂 I'll be a freshman in college this year and I'll major in Statistics! So excited. I plan to become an analyst in the future, I just don't know my niche yet. 1. I just want to know what types of software you usually use for analyzing data? I've done my search and it's mostly Python, SPSS, SAS, or R. I'm planning on learning them while in college and do freelance so I can practice in the field. Also, I just want to have insights from a professional. 2. How do you acquire clients? Do you make the offer to them or do they call you?
@@syl7180 I'm doing good thank you. I think i made the right choice so far. Most of the stuff i took is in the actuarial exams that i will take next year. From what I've noticed, statistics majors are more technical because it's a specific niche. A lot of career exits need a masters or in my case actuarial exams, etc. Finance is more transactional and possibly you can go to the banking career path. Or consulting. Either way, what matters are the internships and the experience. And certifications.. just my two cents though
This video is good, unlike other day to day job where they start waking up, brushing teeth etc for first 5 mins and doesn't explain the job in detail
I know right! Like I click on these career videos to learn about the career, not what coffee you drink or what your outfit is for the day 😂

If 20% of product gives 80% of income then should we remove other 80% product or give offer on them?
Good question! The answer really is different based on each case. With this particular case, some of that 80% product are easy to add on services. They have a good profit margin and add value to the total service options. Other ones we identified are too much time and effort with a low profit and so will be discontinued.

Very well explained! These are the details I wanted learn about.
This was the strangest "day in the life" type of video but there was a ton of useful information!
Very nice summary!!! Dynamic, easy to follow and understand!! Congrats!
What is the diffirant between claint & stakeholders?
What degree in college do you get to become a data business analyst? I see business administration with a minor in business analytics in the college near me but I want to make sure this equips me to become a data analyst.
Hello! I saw for one of your replies that you majored in math. The question is, do you have to be good at math to be a business anylst? At best I can complete calc work lol. This kinda worried me, how often do you use complex math?
No
Awesome video, thank you!
Do you think major in accounting for Bs and business analytics for master?
Hey Jen, Thank you for sharing this video. I had a question.. like I am pursuing a master's in business intelligence and digital marketing .. so business intelligence is somewhat related to business analyst. So. would you mind sharing how can I start with the internships or work under someone. I am not from an engineering background but seven working experiences with corporates as a customer consultant. PLease suggest.. Thank you
Hi Jen, do you work as your own company and get hired by companies as a one off job? Thanks
Thanks for the clear video. So can I say that BA is a company GP ?
You mentioned doing "some coding work" and I'm interested to know a little bit more about that. I'm a business analyst looking to add coding to my skillset. What do you recommend as the best beginner coding tools?
Dianah Spencer SQL
Check out datacamp: bit.ly/TCFDataCamp. I'd suggest learning Python (though SQL is also a good choice).
@Dianah Spencer i am looking to move my career into Business Analyst, I've been doing some training and reading, what are the essential tools or skills to learn? what help or advice can you give in order to get a job as a Business Analyst.
What type of tools you use as for ba

What do you need to study to become a business analyst?

Thank you for your video. I am an HR professional and don't have technical skills. Am I eligible for the Business Analyst role?
so most of the things i cannot understand but i am pretty sure now i am built in business analyst not a data analyst Thanks for clearing my thoughs about and More guidance from your side will be appreciated thanks
Great video
Hi Jen,
First off, I would like to thank you for putting up videos like this.
For mocking up a flow and explaining the new pricing process, I used Lucidchart (again, plenty of other comparable mindmap tools exist).
amazing video.. can i know what softwares you are using for the work thankx
Do you use BPMN?
I do, but it depends on the project how detailed I get with it. If it's a project where I'm the sole person consulting a small business and I'm personally doing the project management, business analysis, and implementation, I'll usually keep it simpler and focused mainly on stakeholder understanding as a goal.
Is this BA in salesforce?
Can business analyst be CFO ?
Did you go to university for this job, if so what course did you take?
Hi :) I'm in Ireland and am looking to do an online course in BA. What type of traits does a BA need to have? I've been told it would suit me - that an Project Management. Can I ask, is it contract work/reliable/agency/full time?
What minor do you recommend taking after taming BA as a major
Bsc honours in Business Informatics 😎 or Computer science, Bsc IT or Bsc Data science, Mathematics major, Economics degree
MINE OF INFORMATION
THANKS FOR THE QUALITY VIDEO
RESPECT YOUR HARD WORK
Great video!
Please how do i become a business analyst?
Do I study it in school?
And guide on becoming a self-taght one?
I think you should have a degree in finance. Tho I’m not sure but it’s requirement for this job where I live
Thanks for the video, great content!
Which CRMs do you generally use, are you using SalesForce?
Difference between business analyst and data analyst?
This video really helped me, I just subscribed 🙂
Just started my internship as an BA. Also is it a good choice to switch from Developer to a BA..?
Usually people use BA as a stepping stone to eventually becoming a software developer. Do you dislike development work?
Love your videos! :)
U forgot one thing! Learn SQL!
Hey how's your statistics major going? Do you find it useful for future job prospects? I'm torn between majoring in Statistics or Finance
@@jchung5066 do you learn programming during the stats course? Or is it something you have to learn yourself online?
Thank you!
Thank you for this vid
