In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm playing along with the band on this soulful song by Lake Street Dive called Mistakes. Megan and I heard this band at The Late Show some years ago and were quite impressed with them. When I recently heard/viewed this song, I wanted to "join in" as a piano player. We do a bit of our usual analysis along the way. I hope you enjoy!

For Lake Street Dive, the vocals and trumpet jump out at you right away but when you start listening to Bridget on the bass you're hooked.

Lake Street Drive is a phenomenal band and are my "homeys" from Boston. Rachel is a killer vocalist, with perfect tone, control and phrasing and the rest of the band are great musicians, maybe the most captivating being the bassist, Bridget Kearney, who "plays the shit" out of her upright bass.

Yep, a terrific band. As you know, they all came out of New England Conservatory as jazz majors back in the mid-2000's. And you are right, they are spectacular live. All of their session recordings such as this one are live takes, and thank goodness they are all over UA-cam with literally hundreds of sessions such as this. So envious you got to see them in a setting like Colbert. I have seen them three times, and they really pack a punch. A big part of that punch I credit to Bridget's bass work, which produces a massive sound. She is considered a master and one of the best in the biz. They are prolific song writers, too, and all of them write. On this song, Rachael likes to tell the story of how she came up with that hook, "Look at what mistake I'm making now"...she was eating a hunk of chocolate cake by herself in the back of the tour bus. A funny story, but she took that one thought and came up with that line, then crafted this song. Thanks for featuring this!

Love this band! Heard them over the in-store radio at Barnes and Noble. Immediately went to the music section and asked the dude who the hell this was. Bought the cd and been a fan since. Great reaction.

Am I the only one who digs the song way more with his piano accompaniment? Even if it's not Doug here, I really think the song leaves space for a mid heavy instrument like the piano or maybe even the guitar to comp and give the song more groove and feel. Tbh it's kinda a missed opportunity to me, the song needs it (IMO)

To me this song is a bare bones duet between the singer and the trumpet. They have plenty of songs with heavy instrumentation, but what makes this song unique is the sparseness. Ive seen them live a few times and when that first trumpet part comes in everyone goes wild. Its iconic.

I love how sensible you were in preserving accents and rhythm, the track is simply perfect as many by LSD

This was cathartic! This is just about my favourite LSD song - super smooth and the vocals in this recording are spot on.

Such a great band, really nice to see them on your channel. I've been lucky enough to see them live here in Scotland.
Perhaps do a reaction to their live cover of Lola, or their original Call Off Your Dogs. Both are fantastic!

Hey Doug, great video, great channel.
I would recommend a band more like Lake Street Dive. The band is Tedeschi Trucks Band. Blues rock jam band similar to the Allman Brothers. Great vocals, amazing guitar work and a wonderful horn section. Hope you get a chance to listen to them.
    All the best

And this episode is a confluence of two of my favorite UA-cam things: Daily Doug and Lake Street Dive. Superb stuff. And Doug you could easily join the band on piano. Your groove was perfect. This was was 10 minutes well spent!

I came to leave a suggestion for you to react to. But at 1st I have to say this was a a pleasent surprise. Now that's was a quality performance. What a great band. Honey to my ears.
    Now to my suggestion:
TUOMAS HOLOPAINEN - A LIFETIME OF ADVENTURE
from his 2014 solo album "Music Inspired By THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SCROOGE"
a graphic novel by Don Rosa, the illustrator and storyteller.
The album was recorded in London with Pip Williams and The London Philharmonics just like the backing tracks for Nightwish. Tuomas paid for the album himself and he was pleasently surprised when Nuclear Blast records agreed to publish the album without even listening to it. They wanted to have a video for one of the songs, against what Tuomas had initially thought - no videos.
I'm glad they made the video. Don Rosa is in the video, drawing. And clips from the recordings. Vocals by Mrs. Holopainen, Johanna Kurkela.
Different from Nightwish songs, but as good, beautiful! It is not an actual Christmas song, but Christmassy, yuletide mentioned in the lyrics.
    Greetings from (cold) Helsinki Finland!

Just discovered your channel in the last week or so. I like the concept, even though jazz is my big thing, with current concentration being on jazz fusion bands tending toward funky., like my fave Snarky Puppy (you will LUV them) & Fearless Flyers. Secondarily, I really love jazz vocal groups (The Swingles---still around after all these years; Pentatonix, The Real Group, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Idea of North) & pop-A Cappella groups (VoicePlay & Home Free). You are sooo right that those of us who are less young (Refuse to get old!) can get into Lake Street Dive (I'm LXXV years young). Raclael Price & I have several mutual friends who kept sharing videos & hooked me---helped in part by their jazzy side. I was as surprised as anyone when McDuck Olson said "Enough!" in May and walked away, but guitarist James Cornelison seems to have slid right in as easily as Akie Bermiss did on keys 4 years ago. Like I said, Top 40 is not my big thing, but at least the one top pop band I dig has a string of platinum albums. I guess that's about enough... for now... Happy Holidays...

Love the song and the analysis! Rachel is also in a group called "Rachel and Vilray" where they do mostly original songs in the style of 30's/40's small combo jazz. Side note: recommend reacting to Methuselah's Children or The Ghost of Flowers Past by Moon Safari. It's progressive rock with Beach Boys/Osmond Brothers style harmony. Good stuff!

They've become one of my favorite bands over the last year or so. I discovered them on UA-cam because they covered another song I was listening to. They do a lot of covers and they do them very, very well. A couple of my favorite examples: I Want You Back (Jackson Five): ua-cam.com/video/6EPwRdVg5Ug/v-deo.html and Rich Girl (Hall & Oates): ua-cam.com/video/89Oc1UE7SS4/v-deo.html
