Your videos are well planned, well explained, and have clear video. They have been extremely helpful with my boat project & I am very appreciative

This means the absolute world to us, thank you so much for the ( Super Thanks ).
That was extremely kind of you to do, thank you again. Please reach out to us any time. 😁👍🧰
Wow you are the BEST instructor. I never sow a video with explanation and perfect video shots. You are number one.👋👋👋👍👍👍
Means the world to us, we really mean that. Thank you for taking the time out of your Friday afternoon to share this.
Hope you have a great weekend. Many more helpful videos to come, we promise. 😎👍
I watched all of your videos as well as plenty videos on YT pertaining to the Alpha One. Your precise explanation, camera position, and calm tone make your videos exceptional. I watched part 1-6 this past week every night after work. Made some notes and referred to Service Manual 14. Even though I have a Gen 2, your videos made it sooooo ez peasy and I got it done! The manual leaves a bit out but your vids cover everything! The only difference for me was the GL hose and the assembly of Ujoint bellow to the bell with retaining ring (no clamp). Used the right install tools & I'm happy to say the boat has been water tested and is working perfectly! THANK YOU & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
P.S. My 4 yr old daughter has been constantly reminding me "Dad, DO NOT CROSS THREAD IT" 😂🤣
Good morning ☕️
This feedback means the absolute world to us, thank you. We put a lot into our filming and any and all helpful feedback is greatly appreciated as it continues to help us stay on track and create the content that the DIY community deserves.
It’s great to hear you completed the project as well as water tested newly installed parts. We also know the amount of money you saved by making this project DIY.
However our favorite part of hearing about your DIY project was that your daughter kept reminding you of the importance of not cross-threading the bolts. 😁👍
She gets an A+ for that and having her working beside you through it must have been enjoyable.
We really appreciate you sharing your experience with us this morning. Reach out any time!

Did you install the drive and exhaust bellows to the transom side first, then onto the bell housing second? Also, did you drive in the retaining ring for the exhaust bellow with adhesive in it? Or put it in without adhesive? Thanks!
@@andrewbrown1463
Good morning ☕️
We have an alpha one gen 1. We installed the exhaust bellow to the transom as opposed to the Bell Housing.
U-joint bellow, water tube, and shift cable were installed to Bell Housing before shifting Bell Housing into transom.
After we shift Bell Housing into transom, we can connect the bellows in the following order.
• U-joint / shaft bellow
• Water tube
• Shift cable bellow
• Exhaust bellow.
As far as the gen 2, it will be the same as our steps however you will have the additional oil hose. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you for putting these videos up. (1-6) I did my bellows and bearing about 5 years ago. Your explanations and correct tools to use are going to make a huge difference this time. I wasn’t looking forward to doing it or the price to have it done. These videos are awesome!.
We are very honored to read this, thank you. That’s awesome you are making it a DIY project again this time around, you’re going to save lots of money.

Commenting to say that Michael, you got us through our outdrive replacement with zero prior knowledge. We just started her today and everything works great. We are so proud of our work, and not to mention, we saved $1000’s doing it ourselves. THANK YOU for these videos!!!!
EXCELLENT VIDEO. Helped a great deal with my Teardown, waiting for the new parts to arrive and will be using the videos again for the rebuild. Thanks Again, Great Job!!!!
We appreciate that, thank you. That’s awesome you’re doing this as a DIY project. We are just a comment away if you have any questions.
It means the world to us that you took the time to reach out to us, thanks again. 😎👍🧰
Brings back memories when I worked on my boat, great video Michael 👍😁
Thanks for watching Dave, hopefully good memories….along with a few annoying ones as well…as we have all ran into annoying issues with the boats we have owned.
😁👍
All these videos have been amazing. You're explanations are great. I recommended your videos on a Mercrusier Facebook page, so hopefully you get a bunch of views from that. One question I had is where did get the bearing seal from? Thanks and keep up the good work
We really appreciate that, thank you. We do our best to get OEM and this project allows you to do just that.
Mercury and Mercruiser continue to manufacture OEM (Quicksilver) parts for a substantial amount of older drives…compliments to them on that.
In regards to the bearing seal, are you referring to the Gimbal Bearing Grease Seal? If so…if interested in purchasing this product, visit our Amazon affiliate link below. I earn from qualifying purchases.

You can get an OEM seal from a local Mercruiser dealer/MX shop.

Best "How to video" Iv'e ever seen. Thanks
Good morning ☕️ we are very honored to read this. We do our absolute best to put together videos for the DIY community that gets the info to them without wasting their valuable time.
Thank you. 😁👍🧰
The head of the screw securing the "binding cable" broke off in the bell housing. What is its function, is it really necessary and how do I fix the issue if it is necessary? This was a huge project for me - one I have finished yet - and there is no way I could have gotten this far with out your videos. Thanks so much.
@@MarkFowler-m1x
Thanks for watching, hope your DIY project is going well. Are you referring to the screw that we apply Loctite as well as safety-wire to secure it in place?
If so, this alleviates the possibility or chances of the shift cable extending out of the shift cable bar/housing.
Without the screw/pin…the shift cable would not be able to operate as designed…meaning not shifting gears through neutral, forward, and reverse.
Thanks!

I have an Alpha One Gen 2. Should I attach the drive shaft bellow and exhaust bellow to the transom first then to the bell housing second?
@@andrewbrown1463

Also, does the silver ring that gets driven in to secure the drive shaft bellow get bellow adhesive? Or put it in dry?
these videos are a home run!! Working on a 2018 Bravo 3 where it seems my bellow's are still it good shape but the seal towards the coupler went allowing some water in, Can I just redo the seal with gasket glue or is it best to just replace new ones. Also can you offer where to locate serial number so I can purchase proper service manual.
Thanks for watching and sharing this, we do our best to produce helpful videos that give you the info you need without wasting your valuable time.
If it was us, we would install new seal. Do you see any stickers on engine that provide any serial number info?
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders i was able to locate the service manual thanks. Another question..am i able to remove bell housing without removing shift cable or that has to happen?
@@keithjetter6349
Awesome, that will come in handy moving forward. The bell housing can be removed without removing shift cable however it will require shift cable bellow clamps to be loosened to allow shift cable bellow to shift away from transom as you pull bell housing out.
👍☕️
This was a very informative series! Do you have a series on the throttle shift cable replacement?
Hello Michael, great video and very informative. I have the same drive and would like to rebuild it. Unfortunately I don't have any service manuals and the serial number is illegible. I think it should be between manual 4 and 6. Do you happen to have one of the two as a PDF or know where you can download it?
Thanks for watching, we used manual 6 and you can contact Mercruiser direct for a PDF download.
Hard copy is an option as well.
Hello Michael
Should I attach the u joint bellows to bell housing first with the gen 2
Thanks for watching, we recommend following your service manual to-the-T which will guide you on that process however in our case, our specific serial number service manual guided us to install all bellows to the bell housing first, except for the exhaust bellow…which our manual guided us to install inside the transom first as shown in our videos.
😎👍
did you put bellows adhesive on the shift cable boot?
Your videos have been great up to this one where you skipped getting the shift bellow on. One shot it was hanging loose and the next it was on and you were doing the clamp. If you’re implying that it just slips on, I’m calling BS on that one 😉. I got my u-joint bellow on and tightened but then couldn’t get the shift bellow on to save my life. It feels like there isn’t enough clearance with the exhaust bellow to get it on. I had to take the whole thing back off and I’m going to try again tomorrow. Seems like I need to slide more cable through, attach the shift below, and then feed the cable back through the bellow when I go to put the u-joint bellow back on.
Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback, always welcome here on our channel. Any bellow can be stubborn at times, we have had a few of those over the years. 👍
Looking forward to hearing back from you on how it goes tomorrow.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders it still wasn’t easy, but the gimbal ring is back on. Not fun, but the exhaust bellow was in the way so I had to push it out of the way and do the shift bellow first. I put the adhesive on the u-joint bellow and then worked on feeding the shift cable through the bellow while it set.

We appreciate the update, good morning. 😁☕️
Sounds like you’re getting closer to getting your project complete and getting back on the water.
Did I miss the u-joint bellow install? I can't get that retaining clip in.
Good morning ☕️ the U-joint bellow is installed in PART 5. Below in the comments and description section, you will find a link to PART 5. 😁👍🧰

Thanks Troy, sharing a comment and a 👍 means the world to us.
U have a good show need your help I have a 1988 mercruiser 3.0 4 cylinder and the engine is moving faster than the prop. It picks up speed after five minutes.
@@MarcoPizarro-zd7bg
Thanks for watching, any update? It may be that your throttle cable needs adjusting.
It may also be that your clutch dog is beginning to slip out of gear. Do you notice any free-spinning of the engine while at high RPM’s?…or the sound of the engine slipping out of gear and revving up in high neutral RPM?
Is the loctite on the hinge pins factory recommended?
It is indeed. 😎👍
Hi! Wow fantastic video series. The one thing I didn’t see you cover it where to put the large rubber gasket which is part 3 on the drawing. I can’t figure it out. It should be obvious. The drawing says it goes in after the u joint bellows goes on. It’s the same diameter as the unjoint bellows mouth.
Help! Lol
It’s this one
Thanks for sharing this, we believe you’re referring to the outdrive seal that is placed inside Bell Housing cavity and mates with the upper unit u-joint assembly retainer nut.
We cover this in our (How to install outdrive onto boat/transom) video which has already been filmed, edited, and is in the Que for upload.
As far as the upload date, it may be a few weeks before that video makes it to the front. There are several videos in front of it at the moment.
This entire series was filmed over a year ago and we are excited to bring it to the stage.
Many more helpful videos to come, we promise. 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders thank you so much! I look forward to seeing it.
Does that need to be glued in? I’m still at a loss as to the exact location of the seal placement. It is placed inside the upping bellow all the way to the bearing?
@@malquid3811
We are happy to help. It will be placed inside the bell housing and pushed flush with the beveled stopping point. In PART 3, you will see us carefully pull it out of where it’s seated.

What about the oil tube you cut in yhe begining?
Good morning. Are you referring to our water tube on the left side of transom area? We have the alpha one Gen 1, which unfortunately doesn’t have the oil tube.
The oil tube came into play with Gen 2’s moving forward.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders no the oil tube on the right side you said be sure to put a drip pan down
@@ricping9103
Thanks for the follow up. The oil hose will need to be disconnected from the bell housing to allow you to pull housing off.
That hose feeds all the way into boat and connects to oil reservoir. “Cutting” it will be personal preference however it will need to be removed.
My bad
I went back and reviewed your video and you did not have the tube it was another
Wonder if i can splice it?
@@ricping9103
Very cool. You can even siphon oil out of reservoir. That will definitely help alleviate a mess.
We can even share the siphon kit we use for siphoning fuel out of boat and jet ski fuel tanks.
