I do a very similar method. No stir plate. But I will shake it more vigorously from now on. Thanks for another great and well thought out vid.

I've started using SNS some time ago, it works very well. Also started to keep slurry after a batch being transfered to keg. WLP013, has become my go to yeast when it comes to British beer.

Does it not leak out of the airlock hole when you shake it or do you put a finger over it? Just wonder about contamination risk if your finger is touching the starter. Great video thanks!

I am glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I cover up the grommet hole with my thumb. I do ensure my hands are clean and sanitized. A more ideal container is probably one with a solid lid with the lid left loose.

You added 2 grams nutrients for 1 liter starter :O? fermaid O?

It is the Wyeast nutrient. I have been adding the amount I would normally add to the boil into the starter, but looking around, that might be too much. 2.2g = 1/2 tsp. I see a Wyeast page that recommends 1/8 tsp in a 2L starter. Thanks for the comment. I might play with adding less, though I have not seen issue with the amount I have been using.

Did you aerate the Porter wort or do you not need to with S-N-S?

One of the concepts from an Escarpment Labs webinar that stood out to me was a statement like "Your goal is not to oxygenate the wort, your goal is to oxygenate the yeast." The SnS starter has done a good job of providing oxygen to the yeast to building up their cell structure and energy. Some aeration occurs transferring into the fermenter. This is a fairly low gravity beer using a fresh yeast pack and an active starter. With higher gravity beers, direct pitching a pack, questionable yeast, etc. I might put more effort into aerating the wort.
