I really enjoyed this one with its realistic position. It was less creative, more clinical.

Been watching your videos for about a year, I think. Subscribed several months ago. You are obviously a good instructor, because this is the first time I have paused, and thought the problem out, as you do, and came to exactly the same moves for the exact same reasons! I played a lot of chess as a boy, through mid-high school. Then girls and cars seemed a lot more important. Getting back to it later in life, it is a pleasure to walk down those paths again. Thanks for rekindling my interest in the truly greatest game on earth.

Note about the position at 2:45: queen vs pawn on the seventh rank (and the defending king by its pawn) is a win for the side with the queen only if the pawn is on the b-, d-, e-, or g-file. It's a d-pawn here, so that would be a win for Black.
If the pawn is on the a-, c-, f-, or h-files, the position is drawn.

At the end, after e8Q+, black can play Qb5, but Qxb5+ Kxb5 Ke4 Kc6 Ke5 Kd7 Kd5 wins, as white has the opposition.
Maybe this variation also should have included. 🙂

Yes. Above there was a question on it, which I answered with the same idea, re Ke4, then Ke5, then get the opposition wins for white, and that he likely should have included that line for completeness.
Generally, overall though, he does a GREAT job including the relevant lines, IMO.

this is, that everyone has his own way of thinking and it is impossible to adapt it, we can only try to learn from each othsr, that is the nice thing of life, and our problem are stockfishes that try to overwhelm us, because they are only machines. I hope we will always be able to find where to switch of early enough! 😊

Instructive. may be some ending book published it. ( Maizelis? I don't know...)
Just an aside comment, In the principal line black may intercept with Qb5 but after queen exchanges white takes the oposition and wins, but I think is a better black defense, nevertheless white wins :).

    😁👍
I got all of the tactics except 1, but as you walked through near the end I realised where I had messed up.
Visualising these shorter set pieces is becoming easier, but still a challenge.
Thank you for your excellent explanations.

Excellent excellent puzzle. I asked my son to look into it and he had lots of learnings. He enjoyed the thought process like me. You are just brilliant in bringing out these amazing puzzles for learning. Thank you and God bless you

I solved it, although I almost went with the d file pawn first. At 5:11, you say the best we can do is a draw. Yes, but black has an easy win since white wastes a move when put in check.

Many thanks for posting. I won it 1st time against Stockfish, thanks to what I learned by working on your other puzzles.

Instructive. Also, a very pretty symmetry in promotions.

I love endgames. The subtlety required here to understand what to do with the various lines in such puzzles is a great illustration for why:
The ECE (Encyclopedia of Chess Endings) volume with just K and pawn endings is needed, and also why a revised volume was published (with various corrections, etc).
People thinking "endgames are simple" are delusional, IMO, given how complex even king and pawn endings can be, and then there's ALL the other types of endings. I like the purity of the theory in that you CAN figure it out if you're good, but how HARD it is to figure it out with anything like solid consistency.

So close. Got the starting move and the b3 and Qb5/6 lines but missed that in the Qa4 line the e pawn promotes with a check while d pawn promotion can’t stop perpetual checks and capture of e pawn. Nice, realistic puzzle for practicing pawn end game!

@6:54 what if black plays Qb5 to stop the trade of queens so far back?

    • @rogergeyer9851
      @rogergeyer9851 14 днів тому

A 6:54, white just promoted to a Q with check on e8. If black blocks with the Q at b5 (only legal queen move), then white simply plays QxQ check.
After KxQ, white gets the win by moving his K forward the next 2 moves, and can gain the opposition, being in front of his pawn. It's a good question and a good try, and for completeness, the host probably should have shown that line, but the concept is that the WK has a dominant enough central position that he can easily force gaining the opposition and therefore promote his pawn and win, after exchanging the Queens when black plays Q-b5 after white promotes the e pawn.

I think there's one more variation worth looking at. After 1. Ke3 Ka4, 2. e5, the black king can turn around and start chasing the e pawn with 2...Kb5, 3. e6 Kc6. At this point, continuing to push the e pawn is just a draw because the black king can take the (promoted) e pawn and get back in time to block the d pawn. Instead, White now needs to reconnect his pawns with 4. d5. Now White can go collect the black pawn and use his connected pawns to finish the job.

1)Ke3 -- Ka4 ( forced to promote pawn to Queen as K at a3 Stop pawn from promoting) Now march e pawn to Queen & exchange Queen to promote d pawn to Queen and win.
