I´m the kind of person that fell in love with gintama at first sight, like it´s litteraly my sense of humor, so I liked it immediately, but I know what you meant.
An easy 9-10/10 trying to not be biased. Very funny, very emotional and when it gets serious you won’t be able to stop watching. Definitely recommend. It gets even better with more anime you’ve watched and how well you understand Japanese culture

an easy 10 for me! it’s pretty much the only thread holding my sanity together in med school, and it’s made me more emotional than most other shows cause it being a comedy most of the time makes the intense moments hit harder! the usual episodes tend to start off chaotic as hell and then turn around and hit you in the feels, plus the setting allows for tone shifts that don’t feel awkward! it’s really well done, and the voice acting in this show has gotta be my favourite out of any other anime :) and the openings!!! i hear one at the start of an episode at the end of a long shitty day, and the tension just seeps out of my body

I am so happy Sorachi and the staff are not ready to say goodbye to this beautiful series. We got Ginpachi sensei anime announce and then a thorny arc theatrical version whit some newly added scene that weren't in the series. plus we getting new projects until 2026 for the 20th anniversary of the series. We don't deserve all this but they are treating us to so much goodness. Us gintama fans are going to eat good in these upcoming years.

Gintama for the most part is a comedy show but it's really good imo, it has serious arcs and they're really well done

I'd rate Gintama a 10/10 unironically in both comedy and story, but that's only after completing the entire show. A lot of it is comedy but every so often theres "serious arcs" spread out.. The earlier serious arcs are decent but the few towards the end of the show are PEAK shounen imo. Amazing ride all the way through and I can't recommend it enough.
This video makes it hard to believe but this is a deeply beautiful and heartbreaking show. The character work is just masterful.
Crazy how it’s easily one of the saddest anime at some points, guess that’s what happens when you flesh out your characters and world to an amazing extent

Gintama it's mostly comedy, but the depth within the characters and some arcs are incredible, definitely goated. You should also react to the Top 10 Gintama fights

Gintama is everything, it goes from the most stupid and funny sh-t to badass epicness and saddest tragedies. I dropped the show 2 times but then it became my top 1 anime series.
10/10 for me. great comedy with so much parody, this show have so many reference/parody to other anime,japanese culture/celebs or even making fun of their own company/creator. and at the same time able to give very deep nice story especially around the end of the series. it might be hard to get into this anime at first since mostly early episode filled with one shot good vibe slice of life that looks like a filler of anime. but as the series goes on the story getting better and the comedy getting funnier.

Gintama is a 10/10 for me. Been my a absolute favorite for 11 years now and I absolutely love this series.
Not only is the comedy great, but when the story kicks in it has to be one of the best ones I’ve ever seen.
I just can't believe I've lived to see this moment. My favorite anime. I hope you will also watch the openings.

I would give easy 9/10. One of the best anime ever produced.
The 1 second gintama videos, or gintama out of context will never give you the bigger picture of why this series is beloved. In order to truly understand gintama you have see it it trough, and see why so many people have it as their number one including myself. Gintama could be anything. One moment it will have you bursting out laughing, follow by some truly amazing moments, and then will have you crying at the end. Sometimes that could all happen in a spam of one episode. GINTAMA is a 10/10 to me, call it bias or whatever but no other anime has made fell so many emotions than gintama, and no other anime has change my perspective of how i view the world other than gintama. Truly a life lesson anime, and Hideaki Sorachi magnum opus.

On the surface this series is sheer madness, and it looks like it'd be a major train wreck that's all over the place if you tried to watch it; which it pretty much is for the most part.😅
But GOD DAMN, if this series is not a freakin masterpiece. And we are not talking about a hyped, mainstream, "flavor of the week" level here.
We are talking about a legendary beast who has cemented it's place in the God Tier level of GOAT status. The ultimate "Jack of All Trades" in Shounen. And after it's magnificent finale in the form of the "Very Final" movie last year, it is unquestionably a series that will completely subvert your initial expectations in the best way possible.
Gintama's biggest draw is it's unique genre of comedy that is comprised of episodic scenarios, full of parody and wit. But within it's comedic base are many other genres that range from high adrenaline action scenes, to heartfelt moments that feel like a life lesson for everyday living.
And among it's many peers who it followed in their shadows (i.e. the so called "Big Three"), it has one of the best casts in the business, with (who I personally find) is one of the most top dog protagonists you will ever have the pleasure of learning about, who breaks all barriers and limits like no other.
And while it seems like a lot to take with over 360+ episodes, 3 OVAs, and 3 movies under it's belt, the journey of this series is like no other and will probably make you feel a lot of things that you didn't expect from a "Comedy."😉

10/10 I may be heavily biased but this was the one anime that almost made me cough up my respiratory system from laughing too much.
The arcs are really good and touching and its filled with a lot of hilarious filler episodes and if those filler episodes are gone then gintama won't be gintama
You should complete the full Gintama. Then you will realize, what types of Anime it is? It's totally masterpiece. There has some emotional and serious arc that will change your present situation.

Best comedy-parody anime hands down. It breaks 4th wall quite often. I actually rated almost every season 10/10 on MAL. There are few serious arcs and every single one of them is good, especially Courtesan arc, SA, and FS.
Gintama is not your typical shonen. The series starts with comedy but when it starts picking up the pace, it's better than any other shonen. Especially from season 3 the anime starts picking up pace when Gintama faces enemies from the past in the second arc.

Gintama is funny even without it's parodies, but if you get the references it becomes amazing, pulls a lot on anime and manga before the 2010s except things like koro sensei
8/10 anime, the start is really hard to get through and the comedy is hit or miss, but it gets better later on, and the serious arcs slap.
The series is kind of like anime Family Guy if Peter Griffin's backstory was that he was retired military with PTSD.

10/10 For me as its a perfect mixture of comedy and Action.... Most of the action comes later but the action in this show... man it is awesome...

if i were to be stuck in an island and I can only have 1 anime series with me to rewatch until i die, it would be Gintama. It may not be my top favorite but it's still high up and it's got everything and so random that it's never boring to rewatch. I realize it may not be for everyone especially to those who are not raised in Japan, new to anime or may be a little slow on the head because I've seen some reactors frequently get frustrated that they don't know what's going on even after watching 50 episodes when it's pretty much clear early on that Gintama is not a regular anime. It's been putting its characters in odd, ridiculous, and random circumstances, breaking the 4th and other walls beyond since the first season so I don't understand why some still gets very surprised and frustrated when it happens. Just enjoy the ride and try NOT to apply the logic of the regular animes you have watched to Gintama. it has heart and decent action, but it's comedy first and it's hilarious! if not, THE most hilarious anime I've ever watched.

definitely reccomended I would personally rate it 8/10. watched every episode and the movies. the beginning and some most standalone episodes are slow. but the major arcs are superb. The climax of the series super worth it. every character gets time to shine and the cast is utilized perfectly. Top 10 anime for me!
The only bad thing I can say about Gintama is that its a slow start because it introduces a majority of the side characters. But after that... Its PEAK SHOUNEN

Gintama is full of anime inside jokes or just Japanese inside jokes, but the main story is so deep, it's like an expert anime book, the more you understand Japanese culture and the more anime you watch the funnier this anime gonna be, definitely not anime for beginners.

I cried a number of times watching Gintama both from sadness and happiness, this is just a masterpiece shoved with all kinds of gags but at the end it always manages to grab you by the feels. Recommend to everyone.

0:55 You might not be ready to watch this show if you think kanchō is a naruto reference. This series has tons of references to japanese culture and meta jokes of animes/mangas from a long span of shounen jump etc. Show started 2006.

The action in Gintama is beautiful and strong, and there are a lot of heartwarming moments.
Also, I loved the recap arc endings.
But at some point it became too chaotic for me, and I thought 'yep, it's about to end', but it continued and I stopped watching it.

To give you the short version, which won´t explain anything: Gintama is a Comedy, parody, action anime based on historical figures, groups and events in a sci-fi setting.
To give you a bit more context: Gintama follows Gintoki Sakata, a samurai working as a free-lancer, experiencing all kinds of shenanigens in his everyday live as he just wants to have his peace while reading Jump.
The anime/manga starts as short stories, all taking about one or two episodes, telling how he meets the other characters and how they relate/interact with one another. As the story progresses, story arcs, 5-10 episodes come more and more frequently and get longer towards the end, until the story reaches its finale in multiple story arcs in a row.
The show is famous for its frequent use of obscenity and vulgarity, as you might have guessed from the frequent depiction of puking and dick-jokes, which won´t get less even in the main-arcs.
But don´t let yourself be decieved, the battles are top-notch, the drama is tear-jerking and the underlying mainplot exquisitely developed.
Gintama is one of Shueisha Shonen Jump´s big runners often overlooked in the west for shows like Bleach, One Piece and Naruto taking all the attention and stuff like MHA, Assassination Classroom and others taking their place.
I'm sorry but this anime, I will give 10/10!! I haven't watched many anime but this one is totally my fav among those I've watched

Gintama has anything that you want from an anime or every show but yeah i agree with others before ep50 it's may be boring but it depends on you for me that didn't work. Anyway i think 10/10 its the best number for this amazing show.
