In 2021, in the height of Covid, 88 Rising, their international label, hooked AG up with Money Mark, erstwhile Beastie Boys producer, for an extended sabbatical on the creative process, conducted at an AirBnB in LA which served as the girls' headquarters and makeshift studio. There were a few goals including: a.) to come up with new visuals beyond their usual school uniform schtick, b.) to find more common ground with their international audience, and most importantly, c.) to demystify the music-making part of the process so they could participate, instead of having the music and lyrics handed down to them from above by senior producers.
Money Mark tutored them well with a very playful experimental approach, making sounds with found objects, fiddling with samplers, and free-associating lyrics. The story goes that he showed up at their door the first day with a fresh pineapple in his hand, and they sat around and constructed a story around it, mashing together American UFO cliches with Japanese tokusatsu monster movie elements, building it into what became Pineapple Kryptonite. I haven't seen the movie you mentioned, but I would not be surprised if it they saw it while holed up in their temporary home, and mined it for inspiration. Most of the songs from the Snacktime! EP came out of this stint with Money Mark. Debate rages among fans about whether this material is the most brilliant or the most ridiculously childish of their work. I say it's both, and AG themselves repeatedly say that the experience was critical for them and continues to inspire them.
A short hard-pounding EDM version of this song, the Yohji Igarashi Remix, has become a staple of their concerts. They change into long military coats traditionally associated with macho boys cheerleading squads, and Mizyu's pigtails are transformed into the handlebars of motorcycle --- or is it a plane? I dunno, but I can say that it turns the crowds insane.
