I once had a mysterious creak that took me a month to track down. After a fresh drivetrain cleaning and lube (which is like every other ride for me), it would be silent - until 20 minutes into the ride. So annoying! I finally tracked it down to insufficient grease on the inner part of the Eagle cassette.

I had a mysterious creak once which I couldn’t seem to get rid of. Checked everything on the bike, though didn’t actually replace loads of stuff. Turned out to be my shoes. No, not the cleats, (I tried changing those) one of the shoes creaked on every pedal stroke! I only found out when they started falling to bits and I bought another pair. I only bought them in the first place because they were cheap!

Great video Savant! You are telling me that my bike will creak if I don't maintain it???!!!! NO!!!! lol I had a creak on my SB6 a year ago and I thought it was the bottom bracket, the sound was coming from the BB but it ended up being the steer tube on my fox fork. I solved the problem by selling my fox 36, replacing it with another fox 36 and not then buying anymore fox components lol. And I've had too many other issues with PF bb's until I swapped it out with a Wheels threaded cup bb. The was one of the greatest purchases I've ever given to my SB6. Green lock-tight works much better on chain ring to crank interface than grease.
Same same as when installing the actual press fit bottom bracket bearings.
Fills the small voids. Grease will push out eventually and your creak will return with the little bit of movement between the two surfaces.

I had a noise that only clicked 2 times per complete full cycle, on riding uphill or first few cranks starting out from a complete stop; HARD to find on the stand with no stress!
I just bought for my brother, a practically new bike from someone that never found time to ride it. I knew it was not a tired bottom bracket or anything serious of course; I found it was a loose nut on the back wheel; looks like it never got assembled right; there's only 300 miles on this bike, and it has a loose wheel nut? Not tightened to spec from the bike shop or factory. It was only on the left side away from the gears; was quite loose, without much play in it however; but not even finger tight.. 3/4 inch nut, or mm equiv.
The loud click was from the loose nut and the lock washer caught between nut and main washer. Wheel did not come off when riding; but I'm amazed original owner did not see that, before selling it to me. It made all the difference to fix one thing at a time; test ride it, and I could tell instantly I had my culprit!
Had to re-align the back caliper too; glad I just purchased a rotor alignment shoe that fits over the rotor when adjusting; worked like a charm; I find them difficult to adjust properly otherwise. It was definitely out of alignment once the wheel was on tight; it would not spin for long when on a stand, without realignment, and when I loosened the caliper, took it out of the equation; all was well... nice to have a bike stand, can't recommend it enough; if you like bikes, get a stand.
Finally, glad I did not just assume it was my bottom bracket first!

For some reason my spokes always make pinging noises. Started of with a hardtail, and the spokes would ping, recently upgraded to a full suspension and the spokes on it are also pinging. I have tried tightening the spokes, but doesn't seem to help much.

Check the fork for a "top out clunk" or sounds like it could be suspension pivot related.

I had an annoying noise when pedaling hard... I cleaned, grease and/or replaced bottom bracket, derailleur pulleys, derailleur hanger, chain, cassette, pedals, chainring, rear hub and nothing... At the end, the whole frkn issue was a worn out chainring... even though it didn't look bad at all. I discovered it after watching a Park Tool UA-cam video (rumble noise)... Duh!!!

other things: worn bushings in linkage or in fork.
    spoke nipples or spokes.
    stones in pivots.
    weak BB dying
dirt and stones between chainring & bb.

    • @WildOutdoorLiving
      @WildOutdoorLiving 5 років тому

It won't if you torque it correctly. Friction paste is a good alternative if youre having issues, but if you dont use something your seatpost will eventually bond to the frame.

Had a similar creak that would only happen with a hard push on the crank. Turns out it was a crack on the swingarm, last time I buy a "budget fs bike", it was a diamondback recoil

I can't thank you enough. I have been chasing a clicking/creaking for months, even the local bike shop couldn't solve it. I just took off the derailleur hanger off and found the screws that attach it to frame were quite loose and it was seriously gunked up with dirt, grit and grime. Cleaned it up, greased it and now it is silent! THANK YOU!

I do quite well with maintenance, so everything gets inspected regularly, sadly most kids and parents don't do it, so bikes are death traps, they sohuld watch some videos like this. I've seen a lot of bike abuse. also having a multi tool with you is a must. I am prepared for most things, but my bike is a mess, so I would need bearing press to press bearings back into place, cus my bike sucks.
another thing, dry seals, cracking and making squeaking and creaking scraping noises, but that means you neglected the bike absurdly long.
another common mistake I see often is loose headset, stem, iahahaia knock knock.
the saddle it self so clean and apply some lube. as you mentioned about the seatpost.
tiny dirt/gravel/stones between chain, cassette, chainring rear dérailleur.
a I ssue I had few moths ago with my old hardtail was seat post/seat tube knocking, creaking, but cleaning and applying assembly compound fixed that issue. Like shown here: ua-cam.com/video/vS812szCCUQ/v-deo.html
