    Can't help but wonder if Jimmy would have accepted that case from Mike if Chuck hadn't shown up and rattled him in that way. Running scams is Jimmy's way of coping with stress, like Marie Schrader's kleptomania.

    I love that lighting contrast between Jimmy and Chuck in the board room. Jimmy’s face shining with sunlight, while Chuck is covered in shade.
    Not only is it nice symbolism, especially for the two characters, but it’s also just a really nice shot.
    Like you said, Jimmy might be shady himself, but we know that deep down, Chuck is no better at all.

    It’s heartbreaking to see that Jimmy was on the right track, working in a large firm on a big case, knowing how he ends up by the end of BB. He had a good thing going at this point in the series.

    When chuck says "to bear witness", he doesn't mean he wants to watch Jimmy fail. The meaning of the phrase is closer to "reveal the truth", like how "bear false witness" in the bible means to lie. He intends to have an active role in exposing Jimmy, not just to watch.

    Jimmy did a couple of things that could result in disbarment before he found out that Chuck didn’t want him to be a lawyer. He hired the twins to scam the Kettlemans, and he took some of the stolen money from the Kettlemans. I don’t think you can put the entire blame on Chuck.

    It actually bugs me so much when people say "Chuck was right." Chuck never wanted to allow Jimmy to be a better person and he's the person whose love and respect Jimmy wanted the most. Chuck told him over and over he could never change. He wasn't right about Jimmy, he made Jimmy.

      Jimmy is a grown ass man who got so many chances from other people and had people who supported him in his life. Chuck not approving of Jimmy certainly didn't help but in no way did it make Saul. That was result of Jimmy's own decisions he made over and over again.

    I hate the way people say "Chuck was right about Jimmy." Theres a quote from V for Vendetta that always stuck with me. "What was done to me was monsterous and they created a monster." Treat people a certain way and they tend to rise to the occasion 💯

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 7 місяців тому

      The cause and effect is not as you claim though. Jimmy has had a long history of cutting corners and breaking the law, that Chuck is very well aware of. And in the show Jimmy gets many chances to do the right thing, but he cannot help himself and consistently breaks laws or cuts corners using some scam. Like the cup that didn't fit his company car, he did not fit into a world where he is constrained by rules and regulations like other lawyers. He shines when he can use his charm and wit, to build up a scam to achieve his goals. He even left the fancy company that gave him a huge chance, because they wouldn't let him break the rules to get clients faster.
      I have to say that I originally though as you do, but I changed my mind the more times I rewatched the full series.

    While Chuck probably is the catalyst for slipping Jimmy to become Saul Goodman that still doesent exuse his actions. Jimmy still activley went down the path that he did. Last episode he flicked the switch and unless we say that the whole Chuck situation caused this because of stress or somthing he just did that because at the end of the day he really can't help himself with this. Chuck should have helped Jimmy get on the right to path but because of his own many flaws he just could not see Jimmy as an equal because he knows what he has been doing and even if and when Jimmy is genuenly changing his ways Chuck can't see it because in his mind its inevitable that Jimmy slips back. Sometimes Chuck probably causes this but at the same time Jimmy would probably do it on his own after enough time.

  • @TheUnknownDungeon
    @TheUnknownDungeon 9 місяців тому +17

    The portrayal of Chuck's anger at not being able to control Jimmy is the perfect example of what it's like living with a narcissist. To them, you are nothing more than a servant or a means to and end. They need to be able to control every aspect of your life while not missing a chance to tell you how awful you are and that you aren't good enough nor smart enough to live your own life and that you should be praising the ground they walk on for "taking care" of you. They are never wrong about anything. Chuck is so far off the deep end that instead of taking responsibility for the trauma he has inflicted, he has gone ahead and made himself a victim - and when a narcissist makes themselves a victim they REALLY believe it. Not only that, but he is a victim of an unknown and extremely rare fake illness that only HE can feel and verify. Very convenient.

    i actually don't think Chuck wants to see Jimmy fail. Its a little different. He knows slippin Jimmy is sliplin Jimmy. he doesn't want jimmy to disgrace the law or his firm.
    i think he shows up like, "alright. i want to see for myself."
    the end conversation with kim kinda reflects on this. Jimmy fabricating evidence is a HUGE deal. this could irreparably damage Davis and Main, another major reputable law firm. By doing that, it hurts clients they are helping. Not only that, in tarnishes the law, which Chuck holds sacred. This is what Chuck worries about.
    We think about the effect chuck has on jimmy. but imagine the effect slippin jimmy had on Chuck before this.

    Man bro, every time I think of Jimmy’s character my heart aches. 😢 I can relate with how he feels only it was my dad’s support & approval that I needed rather than my big brother. From first hand experience it’s so hurtful when the one person you need to uplift you is against you, it hurts on a whole other ineffable level, even more than romantic pain cause it’s in such a deep rooted bloodline generational soul level. And kind of like Jimmy I went to a dark place & became the shadow, only the angsty rebellious goth dude version of that. 🦇🕷️🕸️

    The Chuck Jimmy thing is beautifully done. It's a Chicken? Or The Egg? Argument Chuck did dedicate his life to the law and has grown up watching his brother scam steal manipulate and cheat his way through everything.
    He meant what he said the law is sacred
    Slipping Jimmy I can handle just fine bit slippin Jimmy with a law degree is a like a chimp with a machine gun.
    Ultimately chicken probably knew Jimmy best and I think the ocd and jealousy of Jimmy's charisma.
    Jimmy wouldn't have become saul if his brother was more supportive and nurturing
    It should be said there's a lot that leads Jimmy to lose his soul and Chuck plays a part but Jimmy really can't help himself and it's easy to get lost in the charm until it's destructive

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 7 місяців тому

      The cause and effect is the other way around. Slippin' Jimmy existed long before the start of the show, and Chuck's treatment was based on that not the other way around.
      But even in the show, Jimmy got many chances to follow the rules and do things the right way. But he always chose shortcuts and scams to achieve his goals, exactly as Chuck expected from experience.

    Simply put, if Chuck had simply supported and helped Jimmy. There would've been no reason for Jimmy to go down the criminal path. He could've easily made it big as a normal attorney with Davis and Main being his first start as a full fledged lawyer.

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 7 місяців тому

      The reason he left Davis and Main was not Chuck, it was because he did not want to follow the laws, rules and regulations. He could not help himself and consistency chose shortcuts and scams to achieve his goals faster. Like the cup that didn't fit the company car, he just did not fit into the rule-following world. This is exactly what Chuck knew.

  • @xyrots
    @xyrots 9 місяців тому +1

    14:18 your reasoning can be applied to so many different things. The Jedi Order and Anakin Skywalker for example. Had the Jedi Order trusted Anakin and stood by him, he never would've went down the path he did. The Order ended up being the cause of their own downfall. Like imagine Mace Windu was like "See! I was right!! I told you we couldn't trust Anakin" after the events of RoTS lol. Like your hesitance to trust him is what put him in this position the first place. Same with Chuck and Jimmy. Chuck beat him down so much to the point where Jimmy felt like he had no other choice but to become the person Chuck always thought him to be.

    chuck is afraid that jimmy will be a better attorney. jimmy is more of a people person than chuck too

    • @element4element4
      @element4element4 7 місяців тому

      Chuck is not afraid of Jimmy being a better attorney, he is not even close. He is afraid of Jimmy not following the rules and laws, instead always try to take shortcuts and use scams to achieve his goal. Which is exactly how what he does consistently. He even leaves the fancy company that hired him, because they wouldn't let him break the rules to get clients faster.
      For Chuck the respect of laws is paramount, and it's a huge sin to make a mockery out of it for him. Image a Priest that truly believes in god and considers christianity the most important thing in life. But his brother becomes a priest without any genuine belief in god and uses christianity to scam people to achieve his goals. I think that's a more correct analogy.
