Let me start with thank you for your service. Second, Thank you for your honesty and keeping it simple. Now I will be going to dollar stores to find grills so I can make a charcoal basket.
This is an ingenious way to mak a charcoal/ wood basket for your UDS Grill. I could maybe do this myself, and I need one badly. You have inspired me , thank you so much Phillip!!!!
Im a youtube watcher..not really a poster...but you have compelled me to say....Bravo, Fatastic Idea!...Just what I was looking for. I like your style!
this is a GREAT idea.......thanks for posting it. Built my basket out of cheap warming racks from the dollar store:) your design is long term goodness! Smoke on!
Build is FINALLY done. Didn't think winter was ever going to release her grip on us. Don't know how to post a picture of it though but it holds temp great and I'm very impressed with how clean it burns. TBS all day long. Thanks for all the videos and instruction!
This is awesome Sneek...This is the only thing missing from my UDS...I can not wait to start smoking...I am going to the store tonight and I am putting this together for a BBQ this weekend...Thanks man!!!
Simple! This is such a good solution and quick. The only mod I would make is make the crossbar slightly bent upwards in the middle so when you hook it, it lifts up from the middle and doesn't slip to either end.
Saw your video on the UDS a couple of months ago and now I'm going to try one myself. I just bought 2 55gal drums for $10 a piece last night. Can't wait to get started! Thanks for all the detailed videos on how to build one of these bad boys!
My wife and I put the basket together last night. Hopefully we can put up a video of it. I believe I used the wrong gauge of expanded metal though. It did not bend so easily. But after a few scraped up and bloody knuckles, it looks sweet. Thanks for the video! Great job as always.
Good deal my man and thank you for your service! I grew up in NC, a small town call Little Washington by the locals. Lived in Greenville NC most of my young adult life until 1995 and now living in Spartanburg SC because of grandsons, enough said.
Having watched your video's on building a UDS I think you have convinced me to build one of these BIG cooking machines I like your presentations and your overall demeanor, comparing the overall cost against buying a Weber kettle here in the UK very expensive for what it actually is. Weber 26.75 " £360.00 in $ 550.00. Watched some of your cooking view also like what I see, Have a Nice Day !
Hey !! Thanks for sharing I just got a 55 gallon drum to begin my UDS build ..I really like your step by step of the build .It will be my template ! Thanks
I built a UDS after watching this video 4 years ago. I’ve used my smoker more than I ever expected and the food comes out amazing. I’ve built one with a whisky barrel and built one for the neighbor. I’m thinking next spring I’ll have to build myself another one.
Lookd great! Great minds think alike, i was at Dollar General yesterday looking at little cheap grill for the same reason. Mine is a Valvoline barrel that never had oil in it but its only 13" across inside, CHEERS
Right, which is why I was glad to hear from Sneakeey that it wasn't necessary. He said once you load up the basket, it'll go 18+ hours and he's never needed to add any more. No extra work needed, set it and forget it, simple.
I was watching your video, and kept noticing the house, and the way the outlet was mounted and type, and the way your porch was screened in, and I kept thinking to myself, this guy's in Fayetteville. Then I see your credits at the end and see that you are in Raeford. :) Howdy neighbor. Great vid.
Hello! You must live in the Triangle area. They closed the Rose's up here in the triad. I plan on making on of these and completing it by the holiday weekend up coming up. Thanks for the well put together video. Maybe we can get together for a cook one day.
Just gotta say love your video's man!! I am strongly considering building a UDS and will more than likely go with your videos to help me in my build. Keep up the awesome video's man!!
Just about finished with mine! Found a barrel already sandblasted for $40, parts from hardware store at @ $65, just need the coal basket, which I am really diggin this idea!
Great job!! American ingenuity at it's finest!! Can't wait to start mine. I think I'll try Dollar General or somewhere for the cheap charcoal ash pit. The cheapest one I found on Amazon is $17.99 and that's without legs.
ha! great idea man...seen them little grills out there for 9.99 at cheapo stores in LA...hell yeah got to get mine. Building my smoker too once i pick up my drum. Thanks man for the idea
Sweet! Although I just bought a new smoker, I've always wanted to build a UDS. I'll stay tuned to see how yours turns out...looks like you've got a pretty good idea of what you're doing.
Great videos, DC! I live in Charlotte, NC and have watched all of your "NUUDS" videos and have decided to build my own. I'm in the process of getting all of my materials to start my build. Thanks for the info...will keep you posted and possibly film my process and upload.
great information, I just built a uds and was wondering what to do about the charcoal and wood burner. this is gonna be done for mine, thank you for sharing your great idea. Ron Nelson, Council Bluffs Iowa
charcoal and wood burner = your charcoal basket I just happened to call it the wrong name. I'm watching a bunch of your videos right now. once again, thank you
Well Phil thats the first manufactured ass catcher I've seen. I've ran across a few naturals. Looks like it would work really good but not for very many uses due to the thinness of those little grills. I know from my old hunting days they dont hold up to well, they tend to burn through. Nice vid and Ty for sharing.
Sneaky, nice going. Dump the legs. Not needed. Flatten the bottom of the pan so it sits flat on the bottom of the drum floor. You MAY want to use the first grill and save the one that came with the bbq for an emergency spare. If your drum is not new, burn it good. You can use a j-hook on the flat lid to hang the lid on the side of the smoker while tending to the food or coals. You are going to love the drum. Have fun.
Like your basket.. Was there a certain gauge of expanded metal, and bolt length/size. I watched the NUUDS making video too. Length of bolts used? Maybe put together a parts needed list. Love watching
I have a large LP Tank type Reverse Flow pit...capable of holding about 20 Boston Butts. It works great! But, that's a whole lot of work and smoke for 1 shoulder or a Beer can chicken. I've seen UDS projects before and considered it, but your build has me motivated. I have a question though. Is there a benefit to the pipe with valve inlets (other than just not having to bend over to the bottom and open for ventilation? Great build and step by step video.
Can you share any design modifications you found necessary after using the basket in your UDS? The lift mechanism for instance? Also in other vid, ash pan appears attached to the bottom. What works best to do that? Great videos!
looks awesome man! cant wait to see it in action also when you get a chance to look at your personal messages i sent you one with a suggestion on something to cook that me and maybe others would like to see.
Sry for taking so long to reply. Life has been ... .well life lately. Anyhow, I do have a video of the basket up on my channel ... if you wish to call it that. As I mentioned on you chicken video, the wife and I are finally going to finish the UDS up tomorrow and fire it up Saturday and hopefully get a good boston butt or two out of it. Swing by and see the vid I made of the basket if you like. Take care and keep on making your great vids. The wife and I love to view them!
Hey Sneakeey, Have you found that you don't need a hatch cut out of the side for adding more coals/wood during the cooking of whatever delicious thing you happen to have parked on the grates? I was thinking it'd be a PIA to have to take everything out to add more fuel. Or do you just put in enough at the start and keep the air low enough to make it last?
I have smoked Beef Briskets for 14 hours and had remaining fuel afterward. A full basket is more than enough to smoke what ever you are smoking. I have smoke ribs for 3-4 hours, extinguished my fuel and then smoked two Boston butts two days later with the remaining fuel with some to spare! You won't have to touch your fire once you adjust your temp.
+boski da Solja You should be able to find on on Amazon pretty easily. www.amazon.com/Marsh-Allen-116HH-Tabletop-Charcoal/dp/B0000CBIN1/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1463208426&sr=8-20&keywords=18+inch+bbq+grill. I hope this helps.
I love your smoker!! I got all the hardware to make mine.. all stainless steel but my question is do the pipe nipples need to be stainless steel as well since they are partially inside the barrel? Thank bud!
Josh Baker No the Pipe nipples are fine. The amount of heat required to release anything harmful from galvanized steel cannot be achieved in the smoker. Galvanized steel has to come to the melting point to release magnesium.
Oh and one more thing..when you burnt out your barrel did you wipe the inside out after like the black soot or did you just season it right after? Thanks again
I sanded it to remove the soot but NOT to bare metal. I sprayed out the inside with water and let it dry. Then I seasoned it. I can't wait to see your UDS and your first cook. sneakeeey1@yahoo.com
Great video! Thanks for sharing your ideas. I’m currently making one. I’ve completed two burns yet some small areas still haven’t burned off. About 90% is gone. Is it critical to get ALL the paint off?? I would think so. Thanks.
It is only critical to remove ALL of the external paint if you are doing a snazzy paint job. It is absolutely vital to burn /sterilize the inside of your drum! I hope this was helpful.
Good Evening Sir! I have a quick question. I received the round cheapo grill today as you sent me the link. How good do the thin metal bent ends that hold the grate on the ash catching pan hold up with the weight of the charcoal and continous long burning fires??
No, I used some long bolts to suspend the basket over the ash catcher but attached. That required some drilling. I made that modification after this video!
i'm torn between the basket idea or just cutting a 12x12 inch door to load and maintain heat by adding coals and wood . what would be best ? ..... love the videos , they have been a great help - Dsr34
Don't be torn. There is no need for a door. Once the fire is lit there is no need to ever touch it again. I have done 14 hour smokes (Briskets) with fuel remaining after dialing in my temp with the ball valves and the back cap. Your call however!
Hey Sneak, Awesome idea. This will work for me because I can't weld. I smoke a lot of food. I wanted something a little bigger. This may work. How many cooks can get out of the basket before the bottom gives way to the intense heat of fire? The weber grate looked like it was about the same size. Will that work?
Love the videos! Going to build mine soon, in the process of gathering parts and deciding which design elements I'm going to include. Anyway, my question is....holding anywhere between 225 and 250, how many hours of steady heat do you get out of a full basket of coals? Thanks!
Thank you. Please let me know how your build goes and how the smoking turns out. I have done 14 hour Briskets with fuel remaining. Mine holds temp at 225-250 with no problems. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
Hey Sneak, sweet idea but how many cooks can you get out of the basket before the bottom gives way to the intense heat of the fire? I'm going to build an UDS. That 18" Weber grate seems like it is about the same size. Did you go to that? I love fact that there is no welding. I do a lot of smoking and wanted something a little bigger. This may work. Hit me back.
Thank you for the videos six years later and you are still helping helping people
Let me start with thank you for your service. Second, Thank you for your honesty and keeping it simple. Now I will be going to dollar stores to find grills so I can make a charcoal basket.
This is the technique that I am going to be using to build my basket. This is very helpful and you made it look so easy to build it.
This is an ingenious way to mak a charcoal/ wood basket for your UDS Grill. I could maybe do this myself, and I need one badly. You have inspired me , thank you so much Phillip!!!!
Ronda Goodlet If I can be of assistance please let me know. I hope you build one. I would love to see it!
Thanks , going to give it a try when I return home!
Thanks for giving me the update!! Happy Smoking...SMOKE ON!! [Phil]
Mine doesn’t work it may be operators error
This is awesome Sneek...This is the only thing missing from my UDS...I can not wait to start smoking...I am going to the store tonight and I am putting this together for a BBQ this weekend...Thanks man!!!

When you get those BAD BOYS built, I would love to see your final product! Thanks and good luck with your build!
sweet idea! I so gotta do this! this is the easiest fire basket I've seen yet for an UDS. thanks for posting
My wife and I put the basket together last night. Hopefully we can put up a video of it. I believe I used the wrong gauge of expanded metal though. It did not bend so easily. But after a few scraped up and bloody knuckles, it looks sweet. Thanks for the video! Great job as always.
Glad i found your video before buying anything expensive. thanks for the idea.
That is a slam dunk. Very Nice... I am also in the process of building two UDS, also one for my brother. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Jeff
Awesome job man. That really helped me as I dont have a welder yet. I never even thought about u bolts. Thanx man.
Good deal my man and thank you for your service! I grew up in NC, a small town call Little Washington by the locals. Lived in Greenville NC most of my young adult life until 1995 and now living in Spartanburg SC because of grandsons, enough said.
+Zanysadler My service was my pleasure. You are very welcome!
Oriental NC here
Been debating on building a UDS or buying a gas smoker but after finding your videos I am going to build a UDS. Great videos, keep up the good work!
Thank you Brian. Please let me know how your build went and how you like cooking with it!
Having watched your video's on building a UDS I think you have convinced me to build one of these BIG cooking machines I like your presentations and your overall demeanor, comparing the overall cost against buying a Weber kettle here in the UK very expensive for what it actually is. Hey !! Thanks for sharing I just got a 55 gallon drum to begin my UDS build ..I really like your step by step of the build .It will be my template ! Thanks
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your recommendations. Skipping that unnecessary step (trying cut out a door) will save me a lotta work! Smoke on....
You sir seem like a cool dude. You're the kind of neighbor I'd like to have.
Thank you very much my friend!
I built a UDS after watching this video 4 years ago. I’ve used my smoker more than I ever expected and the food comes out amazing. I’ve built one with a whisky barrel and built one for the neighbor. I’m thinking next spring I’ll have to build myself another one.

As always, genius. I am now off to finish my UDS!
I have a pit barrel smoker works great but I need something a little larger. after watching a few of your videos im in love.
thanks for your step by step build now im going to gather parts and start my uds!
chris hoskinson please send photos of your UDS when you finish. I would like to see it!
yes sir I will . in process of getting drum to begin the work on uds. gonna start coal basket tomorrow
Thank you so much for the vid! For the life of me, I couldn't think of where to look for the expanded metal.
Michael Oteri I am glad that I was helpful. That is why I make videos!!!
American ingenuity at its finest. Well done!
Thank you Sir!
Brilliant suggestions! Thanks for sharing, I'll be following your lead for my UDS build.
Right, which is why I was glad to hear from Sneakeey that it wasn't necessary. He said once you load up the basket, it'll go 18+ hours and he's never needed to add any more. No extra work needed, set it and forget it, simple.

bierhound5 Howdy neighbor, Property and taxes are cheaper in Raeford!! Thanks!!
Lots of good ideas. Thanks. Gonna have to make one.
Thanks so much for this great video. I'm anxious to get started on mine!!! I hope its as easy as you make it seem.
that was a sweet deal and quick thinking too.awesome!

Thanks. I would love to see your build after completion!
Short, sweet and neat is right. Good job ! You've just motivated me to build my on, verses purchasing the big poppa drum kit.
Russell Frederick Please let me know how yours turns out!
AWESOME!!!!
I found myself searching for what I have laying around the house.
Just about finished with mine! Found a barrel already sandblasted for $40, parts from hardware store at @ $65, just need the coal basket, which I am really diggin this idea!
Smart and creative. Nicely done
abarisol I really appreciate that...thanks!
Great job!! American ingenuity at it's finest!! Can't wait to start mine. I think I'll try Dollar General or somewhere for the cheap charcoal ash pit. The cheapest one I found on Amazon is $17.99 and that's without legs.

I was just lookn for a charcoal basket but this looks like a fun project thanks!!

great information, I just built a uds and was wondering what to do about the charcoal and wood burner. this is gonna be done for mine, thank you for sharing your great idea. Ron Nelson, Council Bluffs Iowa
Thank you!!! I don't understand your question about "what to do about the Charcoal and wood burner?" Elaborate please?
charcoal and wood burner = your charcoal basket I just happened to call it the wrong name. I'm watching a bunch of your videos right now. once again, thank you
Well.. I just finished welding my fire basket but this is a great idea. Wish I saw it about 8 hours ago
nice job , keeping it simple , but functional !!!!
Thanks, that was the idea. The KISS method (Keep It Simple Stupid)!
Inspiration!!! Thanks man!! Your gonna hear from me in the near future.

excellent work Sir i was wondering what gage is the expended metal 3/4 inch by what gage ?
Terrific idea.
Can you share any design modifications you found necessary after using the basket in your UDS? The lift mechanism for instance? Also in other vid, ash pan appears attached to the bottom. What works best to do that? Great videos!
looks awesome man! cant wait to see it in action also when you get a chance to look at your personal messages i sent you one with a suggestion on something to cook that me and maybe others would like to see.
is not a plastic liner more of a painted color on it do i burn it then sand it inside or just burn that color lining so i could see bare metal
Awesome! Just what I needed... many compliments to you!
u the man headed to the store now

How did you attach to ash catcher to the charcoal basket so you pull them both out of the UDS at the same time thank you in advance
very nice! Im a novice smoker... well meat anyhow. Thinking of building another
Good idea!!! I need to make a square box for an offset smoker.
Awesome idea!!
I have smoked Beef Briskets for 14 hours and had remaining fuel afterward. A full basket is more than enough to smoke what ever you are smoking. boss question i just got a 55 gal food grade had chocolet in side but it has red liner do i sad it burn it sand plast it ? thanks
Ok DC I'm almost done with my nuuds. my concern is that in my area we don't have the 18 inch cheap'o grill. we only have a 12 in. Will that work.?
+boski da Solja You should be able to find on on Amazon pretty easily. www.amazon.com/Marsh-Allen-116HH-Tabletop-Charcoal/dp/B0000CBIN1/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1463208426&sr=8-20&keywords=18+inch+bbq+grill. I hope this helps.
I think im going to try that..great idea
I bought an acorn (BGE knockoff) and I'm looking to make a charcoal basket, seems like a simple and effective technique...
Awesome! Thank you sir. P.s. Im stealing your rib recipe too. Ill send you a pic of the uds when im finished
Awesome ingenuity
Thank you so much!
Are your u-bolts, bolts, nuts, and washers all stainless on this firebox build?
Great video! Thanks for sharing your ideas. I’m currently making one. I’ve completed two burns yet some small areas still haven’t burned off. About 90% is gone. Is it critical to get ALL the paint off?? I would think so. Thanks.
It is only critical to remove ALL of the external paint if you are doing a snazzy paint job. It is absolutely vital to burn /sterilize the inside of your drum! I hope this was helpful.
great idea thank you I'm going to build one thanks again
Good Evening Sir! I have a quick question. I received the round cheapo grill today as you sent me the link. How good do the thin metal bent ends that hold the grate on the ash catching pan hold up with the weight of the charcoal and continous long burning fires??
I have no idea, I took them off completely. They are not necessary!
Daddy Cooks so you just leave the basket sit inside the ash pan?
No, I used some long bolts to suspend the basket over the ash catcher but attached. That required some drilling. I made that modification after this video!
Greetings, the valves adjust the air flow and allow you to control the temperature of the smoker!
i'm torn between the basket idea or just cutting a 12x12 inch door to load and maintain heat by adding coals and wood . what would be best ? ..... love the videos , they have been a great help - Dsr34
Don't be torn. There is no need for a door. Once the fire is lit there is no need to ever touch it again. I have done 14 hour smokes (Briskets) with fuel remaining after dialing in my temp with the ball valves and the back cap. Your call however!
Daddy Cooks thank you for your advice .... i'll go with the basket . keep the videos coming !! - Dsr34
Where did you get that craptastic little grill?
Hey Sneak,
Awesome idea. This will work for me because I can't weld. I smoke a lot of food. I wanted something a little bigger. This may work. How many cooks can get out of the basket before the bottom gives way to the intense heat of fire? The weber grate looked like it was about the same size. Will that work?
Great idea! How did the grill grate hold up to the temp of the charcoal?
It has held up for years! Smoking temps are way lower than grilling on a BBQ grill! Thanks for watching!
Great video! Btw, those ass catchers come in handy sometimes!!! LOLOL
Thanks alot this works great. This was very helpful
What a great idea. Save a chunka money.
You could also use the handle from a 5gal bucket
Very nice. I think I will try that.....
its not plastic is more like a paint liner sir also do i sand the inside
Where did you purchase the expanded metal for your grill basket
Love the videos! Going to build mine soon, in the process of gathering parts and deciding which design elements I'm going to include. Anyway, my question is....holding anywhere between 225 and 250, how many hours of steady heat do you get out of a full basket of coals? Thanks!
Thank you. Please let me know how your build goes and how the smoking turns out. I have done 14 hour Briskets with fuel remaining. Mine holds temp at 225-250 with no problems. Thanks for watching and for commenting!
thanks brother! I think Im going to build me a UDS.
greetings, what is the function of the exhaust valves?. I know that you mention, but i not speak English.
