This is by far the best looking "ugly" I've seen. That bottom vent is an incredible idea. Thanks heaps for the video. I'll definitely be watching this again and again as I build my own.
Nice build and good video. Thanks! I’m planning on building an UDS next month. I was glad to see a DIY UDS using the Hunsaker air intake system. I’m going to use it too.
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing your time and video. I gots the UDS fever again. Had it 2.5 yrs ago, then got a wsm. Now, the fever is gettin on me again to build one. lol
like that you started with a new barrel. i’ve seen so many grills made with bent up, rusted messes and so much time and nice hardware on it to justify. painting it every few years and sandblasting will help it last longer. nice job!
Man, you did an excellent job on that UDS. I hope you enjoy it because it is beautiful and you put a lot of knowledge into it. I've already built one and I absolutely love it, I'm going to build two more and I will take some of your ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Every barrel I have seen on here is a ring top. I have a sealed barrel looking for the easiest way to cut the top out and be able to seal back without having to build a new top
Nice build! You definitely put a lot of thought into it.. I'm looking into building my own and doing lots of research. I've got a barrel of unknown origin, but it's in good shape. Light coat of rust inside, no oily residue, matching lid. Paint is faded on outside but after a good hot burning to remove any possible chemicals it'll likely burn off the paint then I can sand and repaint with hi-temp stuff. I plan to cut the intake hole in the bottom for the burn in so it'll help get it nice and hot. Might even hook a pipe up to the leaf blower or shop vac to force air in for the initial burn. Since I don't know the history of the drum I want to burn it as hot and long as i can so nothing will come off during cooking later on. I am keeping an eye out for food grade barrels too. I have a feeling I might make a second one if I like the first one a lot, LOL. Anyway I'm seriously looking at the Big Poppa Smoker kit for the first build, but thinking of substituting out the sliding side intakes for upright intakes so I don't have to bend over every time I need to adjust the temperature/vents. Your bottom vent is a cool idea. Also dig your wheel and tripod style base. Makes it easy to move around. Thanks for sharing your build. Let us know how your food cooks in it.
Fantastic build !! Keep on smoking. Cheers from canada. Im watching vids on the back deck as my smoker has baby back ribs on the go ! Dont use the bbq much anymore. Just burgers maybe. Haha!
I was given a UDS from my neighbor I have never heard of such a thing what paint can you use to paint it? Mine is an ugly grey and I’m thinking about tacking on wheels to it because of its heavy weight
I got me a barrel and gonna burn it out. Does it matter if I use treated wood in fire? I figure it would be ok since I'm just burning it out. Need some input.
Went ahead and emptied the debris and used some reg burn wood I got from gas station. To make sure it burned clean. Gonna let this finish and burn another sesh. Just in case. Have to have the barrel smelling like treated wood.
This is really nice. 2 questions - 1) why did you choose a bike peg for stabilization? Do they have some give? 2) Is there a reason you put the handle opposite the wheel side? I was assuming I would put it on the on the side with the wheels to make rolling easier. Again, beautiful work. Hoping mine turns out half as good.
I used the bike peg because with the wheels it set perfectly level and got 20 of them just collecting dust that the kids took off their bikes . the reason for putting the handle on the front is to be able to lift the peg off the ground and steer the drum like a dolly . putting it on the side you would not be lifting the drum unevenly and you could put it on the side but would not work for me that way .
when you need to put more charcoal or wood in ,do you have to take all your meats out to add more fuel??That seems like it would be a pain in the ass if you have to add more fuel and take out what your cooking, could you make like a door on the side to add more charcoal? Just curious thinking about building one. Nice build and video
Man that's a nice uds... I tried reading all the comments before asking and my question was answered but couldn't find "The BBQ supply company" was looking for the stack and handle. Could you post a link to the exact website please and thanks.
Nice Job!!! I have the barrel and just need the parts to get started. Where did you get the probe port and what is the stock number? The information on the bag was hard to read from the video.Again GREAT job!!
there is actually only one hole and the other small ones your seeing is the bolts that hold the Hunsaker vent in place and yes it is big enough and can cook at any temp you want .
I used 60 grit at first and then came back over it with 150 grit to smooth it out . The paint held up great but the 16 gall barrel that went around the fire basket helps saves the paint too .
Man, this did turn out good....I need one made. Did you buy all the supplies for the UDS from the BBQ supply company? I like the wheels and bike peg configuration.
Antonio Taylor the axle and vent i got from Hunsaker smokers and the stack and handels i bought The BBQ Supply Company . My kids always take the pegs off thier bikes and wanted to something different and it just happened to work out , thanks for checking it out .
One more question...What type of drum did you buy? Im looking on their site and there are a few options on the open head drums. Was it with the lever or bolt ring? I assume you got the non UN rated drum. Thanks.
Hunsaker Smokers , just do a google search and they are located in St. Louis , Missouri . I love their vent because wind does not affect the cook and you can adjust it with your foot and not haft to bend over .
i bought it off BBQ Smoker Supply Company online for $62 and is a Lava Lock 12 X 12 X 12 basket but if you can get 16 gallon drums you can build a basket real cheap and will be posting a video up in a few weeks of making it .
If you have a sealed drum, get hold of an angle grinder. Tip the wheel about 30 degrees inside the lip and gently grind down to the seal all the way round. A sharp smack with a hammer, and it’ll drop into the drum leaving a nice neat even open top, with the rim still intact to seal nicely with an old Webber lid.
BBQ Freak Thank you! And sorry, I dont know where my manners went. You made a great video as always and I've been kicking around the idea of making an ugly drum so this video was perfect timing! Thanks for posting this video. Again sorry for just blurting out my question, I was just excited by the video. Have a great day buddy.
sweet and yes exactly like that one you did. yes let me know how much for all the parts and then what you will charge. by the way that was a beautiful smoker.
Probably the cleanest yet simple build I've seen. I will be modding my build after this
One of the best UDS builds I've seen on UA-cam. Very well thought out.
Thank You buddy .
Timothy Pirnat I agree. Well thought out & simple design.
This is by far the best looking "ugly" I've seen. That bottom vent is an incredible idea. Thanks heaps for the video. I'll definitely be watching this again and again as I build my own.
Thanks for the comments .
Wow that little sguare sander in 45 min!?! All around the ribs with no scratch marks . U are the man!
thanks and that little sander worked great .
I do like ur idea of the little can.
thanks
Nice build and good video. Thanks! I’m planning on building an UDS next month. I was glad to see a DIY UDS using the Hunsaker air intake system. I’m going to use it too.
Thanks and the Hunsaker vent is the wat to go and the wind does not affect it since it is on the bottom .
Nicely done. Thanks for sharing your time and video. I gots the UDS fever again. Had it 2.5 yrs ago, then got a wsm. Now, the fever is gettin on me again to build one. lol
I sold this one and want to build one again too .
Great job. Thanks for sharing. I like the bottom vent idea.
Love the idea for the charcoal starter. Between your video and one other, my UDS should be SWEET!!!
Been watching a ton of these for ideas for my drum build and yours is the best
like that you started with a new barrel. i’ve seen so many grills made with bent up, rusted messes and so much time and nice hardware on it to justify. painting it every few years and sandblasting will help it last longer. nice job!
thanks and new barrel is the way to go and much easier to prep .
Man, you did an excellent job on that UDS. I hope you enjoy it because it is beautiful and you put a lot of knowledge into it. I've already built one and I absolutely love it, I'm going to build two more and I will take some of your ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks buddy
You. did an outstanding job on the UDS & the video! Very nice!
Thanks.
Getter done.
This is my favorite UDS yet...Great Job!
thanks
Thats awesome mate. Looks amazing. Love your dogs and the bug sounds in your vid.
Every barrel I have seen on here is a ring top. I have a sealed barrel looking for the easiest way to cut the top out and be able to seal back without having to build a new top
I think i remember seeing a person grinding the edge all the way around but not sure . I would just try and find another barrel on crags list .
Nice build! You definitely put a lot of thought into it.. I'm looking into building my own and doing lots of research. I've got a barrel of unknown origin, but it's in good shape. Man you knock this video out of the park!
I like the idea of the 2 bolts on the side so the lid don't hit the side of the barrel. Good idea
thank you sir .
Very interesting. Tks for the ideas, and the video.
Fantastic build !! Keep on smoking. Cheers from canada.
Im watching vids on the back deck as my smoker has baby back ribs on the go !
Dont use the bbq much anymore. Just burgers maybe. Haha!
Thanks
Man, this is a dope build! The only thing i would add is a lid hinge.
This is an work of art!!! Beautiful
thanks Brian .
Great video, wasn’t aware that Hunsaker sold any kind of a kit.
not sure if he still does but use to be listed on his website .
That’s got to be one of the nicest ones I’ve ever seen good job 👍
Thank You very much and just could not make it ugly , lol .
Shouldn’t the barrel handle be on the same side as the wheels?
Looks good
Nice build and sweet Doberman! 👍
thanks and can not take a pic of him but when doing a video I can get a drive by shot of him , lol .
Beautiful, Simple, Very well thought out. I love mine
thanks
Thats a awesome barrel real good job
Thanks
good job, inspired me to make one myself now.
That's a good looking drum.
Thanks .
I used Rust-Oleum High Heat Satin Bar-B-Que Black Spray Paint
I was given a UDS from my neighbor I have never heard of such a thing what paint can you use to paint it? Mine is an ugly grey and I’m thinking about tacking on wheels to it because of its heavy weight
Awesome. The best simple barrel so far. Is there any blue print or diagram with the measurement.
The cover, bottom frame, chimney etc.
Awesome Build!!!
thanks
Awesome UDS. are you able to list all the materials and links to where you got everything?
I got me a barrel and gonna burn it out. Does it matter if I use treated wood in fire? I figure it would be ok since I'm just burning it out. Need some input.
I wouold think it would be okay and I used fire wood on mine .
Went ahead and emptied the debris and used some reg burn wood I got from gas station. To make sure it burned clean. Gonna let this finish and burn another sesh. Just in case. Have to have the barrel smelling like treated wood.
Great video

Dude...awesome job.
thanks
Thanks for the info and quick response!
Joe Brindisi no problem and here to help .
Dude that came out bad-ass.
thanks
Great job,I want one badly
Nice build you still use it if so how is it holding up
I sold it but was a great smoker and wanted to try a drum out but held temps great and steady.
Awesome build. Kind of a dumb question but do you send the inside as well or just the outside?
i just bunt it out because it had no liner on the inside .
@@MidwestFreak thank you for the quick response
What's was the grit on the sand paper you used? Came out good
Really smart build. Do you recall the name of the company in Kansas that sells the steel drums?
Do you remember what brand paint you used on the outside?
It was the satin Rust-Olum BBQ paint .
Where did you get the bottom air flow from and what size crates
Hunsaker smokers sells the kit and not sure of what you mean by crates ?
thats bad ass, just got my barrel, ready to do it
When u did your fire to clean everything out did u have any holes in your barrel?
no
@@MidwestFreak thanks
Awesome video. What digital thermometer do you use?

Where did u get the cable connector
Are you talking what i ran the probe wires through ? You can get them at any hardware store .

Good job sir. How’d it turned
when you need to put more charcoal or wood in ,do you have to take all your meats out to add more fuel??That seems like it would be a pain in the ass if you have to add more fuel and take out what your cooking, could you make like a door on the side to add more charcoal? Just curious thinking about building one. Nice build and video
I never had to add charcoal because I could get such long burn times with it .
thanks for the reply
How much coal you usually use
Would love to get the parts list you used on your smoker, or where to find them. Thanks. Nicest smoker I’ve seen.
most of them i bought at Hunsaker drum smokers online .
Man that's a nice uds... I tried reading all the comments before asking and my question was answered but couldn't find "The BBQ supply company" was looking for the stack and handle. Could you post a link to the exact website please and thanks.
I might of said the wrong pace but here is a link to the store bbqsmokersupply.com/uds-parts.html
Thanks again sir!
Could you describe those cable connectors? I went to Shirleys Fab and the website is messed up?
I found some through: Sigma Electric ProConnex 3/4-in Uf Cable Connector Conduit Fitting
Looks good. They cook really well. Hope you been doing good
thanks buddy .
Nice Job!!! I have the barrel and just need the parts to get started. Where did you get the probe port and what is the stock number? The information on the bag was hard to read from the video.Again GREAT job!!
it is a MM/SE UF cable connecter 3/4" part # 49093 and got it from Home Depot
Just curious what was the complete total cost to build this smoker? Nice job 👍🏼
I got $160 in it .
Great job
With 4 air holes at the bottom is that enough to keep the fire on 250 with the lid closed?
there is actually only one hole and the other small ones your seeing is the bolts that hold the Hunsaker vent in place and yes it is big enough and can cook at any temp you want .
What digital temp gadgets are u using
Hello! I am also in Kansas City. Do you mind posting some information about who you bought your drum from?
What’s grit sandpaper did you us?
I used 150 to get the paint off and then came back over it with 320 .
What grit sandpaper did you use? and how is your smoker holding up?
I used 60 grit at first and then came back over it with 150 grit to smooth it out . The paint held up great but the 16 gall barrel that went around the fire basket helps saves the paint too .
Where did you buy that bottom vent I would like to get one I love it
George Nettles Jr Hunsaker smoker sells the vent kit and real easy to install .
Great tips buddy thanks 8)
You are welcome buddy .
Nice I might steal your idea for your lid holder good idea
Where did u get the hardware from, any links, beautiful design
vent and wheel axles from www.hunsakersmokers.com/collections/all and stack from udsparts.com/
Great video and awesome build. Did you use primer before the paint?
yes and used high heat primer .
I am in Kansas City, so where did you get it? LOL
BBQ Freak THANKS!
Do you have a pic of the bottom damper pattern?
What was your cook time to charcoal fill ?
What's the name of the axle you used to attach thw wheels? Get it from any hardware store correct?

you can buy them with the removable lid and just in-bolt it .
Hi Can you send me the measurement for your basket please

Thanks.
I bought a new heavy duty steel drum with the metal bolt ring new from a container company in Kansas City for $48
Nice!
Where did you buy the lower valve from?
Hunsaker drum smokers sells them .
the basket come from Hunsacker smoker also?
Nice job bro
thanks .
For the amount of parts you installed could you not have bought one prebuilt for about the same cost?
no and not even close and I had fun building it too .
where did you get the damper on the bottom?
Hunsaker Smokers , just do a google search and they are located in St. Louis , Missouri . I love their vent because wind does not affect the cook and you can adjust it with your foot and not haft to bend over .
Thats a good lookin uds man. What is the basket made of. Didnt catch that in the vid if u mentioned it. Good job
i bought it off BBQ Smoker Supply Company online for $62 and is a Lava Lock 12 X 12 X 12 basket but if you can get 16 gallon drums you can build a basket real cheap and will be posting a video up in a few weeks of making it .
How many cans of spray paint did you use?
4 cans .
BBQ Freak What exact Can of paint/brand did you use? t’s been 2 years but hoping You can respond.
How about a water pan??
How do you open the barrel in the first place ?
not understanding your question ? you lift the lid off ?
If you have a sealed drum, get hold of an angle grinder. Tip the wheel about 30 degrees inside the lip and gently grind down to the seal all the way round. A sharp smack with a hammer, and it’ll drop into the drum leaving a nice neat even open top, with the rim still intact to seal nicely with an old Webber lid.
For something like that you want it nickel plated NOT chromed. Chrome turns blue with the heat. Nickel does not.
Can you roaster corn in it
Hey where in KC did you find that barrel?
BBQ Freak Thank you! And sorry, I dont know where my manners went. You made a great video as always and I've been kicking around the idea of making an ugly drum so this video was perfect timing! Thanks for posting this video. Again sorry for just blurting out my question, I was just excited by the video. Have a great day buddy.
it is cool Rusty and glad i could help you out and this is what i do buddy .
get on craigslist just bought one already burned and painted $25 . a guy in Lee summit does them
sweet smoker I live in Kansas city build me one I will pay you!!!
I could make this happen if you buy all the parts needed .
sweet and yes exactly like that one you did. yes let me know how much for all the parts and then what you will charge. by the way that was a beautiful smoker.
ISecond Jr.Thomas (give a response (I'll reply...GOd bless...
You've gotta do something about the "sea sick" camera work! It really takes away from an otherwise great build!
It’s idiot proof! Lol
