Our Workshop Wednesday series highlights our favourite herbs from the garden and how they can be used to create lovely products with simple ingredients you probably already have on hand at home!
In this video, we show you how to harvest fresh lavender and weave it into a beautiful wreath for your home. All you need is a base of willow or grapevine, sturdy jute twine, garden scissors and lavender!

Thank you, I'm so pleased you found it beneficial 🌿
i missed the part of what type of lavender did you use on the beautiful wreath?
thank you for the video, you explained it so well.
I used Royal Velvet, it is a beautiful choice for a wreath 🌿
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 thank you for responding so quickly.
Amazing using fresh lavender ….
The way you talk is so calming. I love your lavender, too. very healthy
Heavenly! How you don’t nap in the middle of making these is beyond me! 🤗 Beautiful job!
Wonderful thought!
Thank you for the detailed instructions. Thinking of finishing the last bit with a ribbon to make it easier to close the gap with a bow & hanger. 😊 ❤
Sounds like a lovely way to finish your wreath 🌿
thank you! what a clear, practical, helpful demo how to make a perfect wreath. I have lots of lavenders this season. I will make them today!!!
Have fun 🌿
Ty so much for this beautiful tutorial. Wow being surrounded by lavender must be such a magical experience.
I made this wreath and it turned out amazing! Now my friends and family want me to make them one. Thanks for the video! 💕
That's wonderful, thank you for letting us know 💚
Just googled to find this great tutorial on lavender wreaths. Thank you so very much. We are on Lost Mtn looking down at Sequim in WA and have inherited glorious lavender which is drying all over the house. Mother in law is getting a wreath very soon. Love your presentation.
Have fun! Your place sounds lovely 🍃
I’m watching this fascinating video on my iPhone 6. I wish the video included some close up shots.
This is wonderful! It makes me appreciate the beauty and grace that nature bestows for us ❤️

Thank you so much for the feedback ☺️
Well, I can't hear you cussing, you're a pro. This is not my favorite project (I cuss a bluestreak!) but your technique makes a lot of sense.
Thank you
I'm so excited to get started, thank you so much for this tutorial☺️😀💝💞
Have fun making your wreath 💚
Great job!
You are a gift for sharing your talent with us. Thank you so much, I really appreciate this video and your work. What a wonderful gift I can make for my daughters. I dried my lavender, but didn't know what else to do with it.
Thank you so much, I hope you enjoy creating a wreath 🌿
Thank you for sharing this very well presented and explained tutorial . Can't wait to make one! ♥️
Good luck, I hope you have fun 🌿
Bardzo ładny. Pozdrawiam serdecznie. 💝👍🌹
What a delightful tutorial. Thank you.
You are most welcome!
Very nice
This was just lovely to watch. You made it look so easy and I can just imagine how it will smell after drying. Can't wait to run out to pick another bunch tomorrow so I have two to give it a try!
Have fun 🌿
Beautiful 🥰
Thank you 😊
So helpful. Thank you!
Welcome!
Thank you 💜
Thankyou, you are wonderful!!! I feel you have given me enough information to make my own beautiful wreath 😁😁
I hope you have fun making your wreath 💚
loved the vid
Thanks for letting us know, Malika!
Very well presented and patiently explained. My very first poem Lavender is in my first book 'Poems That Heal The Mind' I also have a lavender bush, fragrant and full of blooms.
Omgosh. I love it!!! What lavender is best for wreaths? I have Hidcote lavender I believe. Will that work? I’m very new at growing lavender.
It’s lovely. I only have French lavender for now. Seems the English would be what I need? I’ll go ahead and try the French. 😊💕
I do my wreaths with all sorts of herbs, I'm sure your French lavender will turn out lovely ☺️
What is the size of the wreath you used? I loved watching this!
I usually make my wreath base the size of a dinner plate. The wreath will be quite a bit larger than that when completed. Have fun 🌿
Hello, lovely video can’t wait to give it a go. What diameter was your base ring please? Thanks
Great video,…i have a small lavender farm in Okotoks Alberta (100 plants) mine unfortunately don’t grow as tall and full as yours :( I get about 130 bunches a season, but next season I will use them to make this wreath!…. Thanks for sharing the video!
Most welcome, have fun 🌿
Beautiful! How long did it take you to construct the wreath? I have a field of Grosso that I use for essential oil, a small amount of Goodwin Creek, and some beautiful Munstead for landscape color. Would you recommend any or none of these for a wreath? I also have some Spanish for the variety, but I don't believe it would lend itself to the full wreath you demonstrate.
From start to finish with no interruptions, assembling a wreath takes about one hour. That doesn't include cutting the blooms or making the wreath base 🌿
What state are you in? I believe I have hidcote lavender. Hopefully it’s good for this wreath.
@@savvyvenus we are a Canadian farm. You can certainly use Hidcote, I just find it is very fragile so be careful where you hang it.
Thank you for such a wonderfully informative video.
What is your price for selling a lavender wreath like the one you just created?
@@ritagjefle3995 wreaths are so time consuming, I only make them for friends!
Thank you for a great lesson. What varieties of lavender work best for wreaths?
I love to use lavender with sturdy stems that can withstand the twine pulling at them. Royal Velvet is always lovely, it dries such a deep blue 💙
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 thank you.
oh how pretty
Thank you so much for sharing! I made a wreath with munstead lavender. Maybe the lavender wasn’t ready because they are not bloomed yet. The buds are falling off from the wreath. Should I wait to make wreath until flowers bloom?
We try to do our wreaths when the lavender flowers are 1/2 open, that is the perfect stage for a wreath 🌿
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 Okay! Yup mine was too early! I will try to make it again! Thank you!
Most welcome, have fun 🌿
do you have a link where to buy the gardeners scissors?
Those garden scissors come from Lee Valley Tools, they have a great website 😊
Can I put the stems in a dry vase?
I do that often 🌿 the stems splay out and the look is so organic. Just don't crowd them so they can dry properly. Too many stems can lead to mildew.
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 thank you
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 if you don’t mind me asking what zone are you in
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 your yard is beautiful with all those lavender, may I ask what kind you have please
We are zone 5 in the interior of British Columbia. We have 60 Lavenders in our collection 🌿
I didn't hear what the type of lavender was that you used for the wreath? I have Folgate lavender and you said it was a bit too fragile.
I love Folgate, but it makes a very fragile wreath. I often make mind with Royal Velvet or just a lavender with a sturdy stem 🌿
I was surprised when you said it will last for years, I was expecting you to say months. I thought it would disintegrate by then.
If you cut the lavender when it is half open, it will last for ages. If you cut it too late, it will definitely disintegrate 💚
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994 I was looking forward to it, but the five plants I put in the ground that day died 3 days later.
❤
Did I miss what kind of Lavender are you using for the Wreath????
What type of lavender did
Can it be done on a foam form wreath and do the stick on way
I think that would be fine with dried lavender, but not with fresh 🌿
How old do the plants need to get to be able to provide enough to make a wreath or two?
Thanks!
A two year old plant should give enough for one wreath. A three year old might supply two 🌿
What variety of Lavender is this? I heard what lavenders don't work, but didn't hear what lavender this wreath was created from. TY, Tim
I used Royal Velvet to do this wreath Tim, the flowers are very sturdy when dried.
Which lavender are you using for the wreaths?
This wreath was made with Royal Velvet. It has really sturdy flower heads when it dries.
Some lavender is very fragile when it dries, Royal Velvet wreaths will last for years if they are kept out of sunlight 🌞
@@okanaganlavenderherbfarm1994
Thanks so much for the reply; I actually learned so much from your videos.
I don’t grow Royal Velvet as it’s been difficult to get.
Would you recommend any other lavender for wreath making?
@@JosephineWaltz I would dry different lavenders first to see which ones are not fragile when dried. Then I would use the best from what you grow 😊
Lol my lavendar produces more leaves than it does flowers so I have to find a different strain that will produce more flowers that can thrive in my area. However the leaves it produces are extremely potent with the medicinal oils/scents so its excellent for cooking and making little scent bags to leave around the house.
This is quite unusual 🤔 Lavender is so floriferous generally! A few questions might solve the issue 🤓 firstly, what variety are you growing (and in what country/area)? Secondly, are you fertilising it? 🤔 Lavender THRIVES on poor soils and fertilisers are the number one cause of lots of foliage, and no flowers.
Some people say climate is also an issue since it’s a Mediterranean plant, but I live in Scotland where the spring, autumn and winter are constant rain, sleet and snow 😂🤦🏼♀️ My lavender thrives regardless. The summers here are very long and quite hot so it balances out.
Usually it’s fertilising that is the issue so don’t give it any at all. If you’re not fertilising, it may be that your soil is just too nutritious (though again, I’d be dubious because I garden on heavy clay which is extremely nutritious and my lavender thrives 🤔).
The other cause could be not enough sunlight hours 🤔 Although in Scotland, we have pretty much Alaska-level daylight hours in the winter, we also have very long summer hours. Despite a very long and dark winter, until December I had blooms 😂🤦🏼♀️ If you have a full sun spot in your garden, put the lavender there if it isn’t already.
Lastly, try being “mean” with cutting it back. I do two “big prunes” a year: once in the late autumn to tidy up the plants before winter (and to allow air circulation since it will be wet months ahead) and then again in the spring - just before it gets going. It encourages more blooms! Cut back HARD - trust me, it will grow back! 🤓 Lavender aren’t long lived, so to prevent them getting too woody, cut back as hard as you can without going too far into the woody base. This keeps the shoots young and green for longer! 💖
I hope those things help!
What kind of lavender did you use?
I love to use Royal Velvet for my wreaths, it has such a sturdy flower head.
Did you get a musty smell from not being dried?
Hi Linda, this method of making a wreath needs fresh lavender in order for it to be malleable enough to follow the circle of the base. That being said, your fresh lavender does need to be dry, not wet from a sprinkler or rain which could cause a musty smell to develop. Hope this helps!
May I ask what type of lavender did you use? I must have missed it :)
Royal Velvet, it is a beautiful choice for a wreath as the flower heads are very sturdy 🌿
How can you make your wreath last for years?
Thank you for answering this question at the end of the video! And thank you for the hair dryer tips! Never heard that before!❤
