You have to remember just because the frame is harder that can actually work against you, because if it does deform, it can push in on the screen permanently and cause a crack. Stainless steel is much more flexible while still having good strength, which can actually be a huge asset because it can absorb some of the shock from the impact rather than sending everything into the screen. Fun fact I had two broken screens when iPhones were only in aluminum. Currently watching this on my iPhone 14 Pro Max and I can’t believe how durable it actually is compared to the 15 Pro. In my personal opinion I prefer a heavier phone it gives me a sense of added durability. Sick video man!
O yea I have a 14 pro and after seeing this, along with that one UA-camrs video of him snapping the 15 pro glass just by pressing on it…. I’m definitely not upgrading
I lost my 14 PM in the sea for two days, the waves took it back to the beach and I was able to recover it because it still had 30% of battery. Still working like a champ.
Some of the issues with the 15 Pro are that; one that the rear panel no longer has a metal back plate, and two, the aluminum chassis doesn’t provide enough rigidity. Apple cheaped out on the frame by making the titanium only a minimal cladding. Stainless steel is a superior chassis and frame.
The level of constantly rising excitement I had watching this was blissful! The dedication you went through for this was amazing! I promise you: those of us who really appreciate you REALLY APRPRECIATE YOU!
Having today spent 20 minutes with the 15 pro max I came away not impressed with the “titanium” feel of the device. It feels cheaper than the 14 and 13 in build quality and your drop test confirmed my initial impressions. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me that the so called titanium is more marketing of the composite ‘titanium than what we are led to believe about the metal. Apple cutting cost to improve margins!
I wish they keep the flat glass. With the thinner bezels, they could probably make the edge of frame rounded, extend it a little bit outwards (with internal aluminium support) , but keep the flat glass a tiny bit lower than the frame. That would be a lot more durable than switching to a new material.
Firstly, props to you my dude. Can’t believe we’re getting a drop test so early when the phone just got released. Secondly, given the fact that the 14 pro is heavier, I really thought it would crack first but wow. I was thinking that the slight curve on the glass might be bad for falls on the glass as my X broke because of that curve but wasn’t expecting it to be that bad. The dark titanium is doing exactly what I thought cause I thought it might be like the black iPhone 5’s aluminium and show the inner colour when it gets damaged. So it looks like stainless steel although it scratches easily takes falls better.
Na verdade ele foi feito de uma liga de Titanium (mais barato) diferente do aço inoxidável (puro). As empresas querem fazer propagandas pra vender mais, e não apenas materiais melhores, como esperamos!
The back can scratch waaaay easier now with iphone 15 because it no longer sticks to the chassis you can look that on camera the glass is separated and glued to the chassis it was now like the nutella box it will break with a little pressure
I have mixed feelings on this. Like many, I have a screen protector and at least a thin case on mine basically from day one. I haven’t experienced an actual cracked screen in a long time. But I can say I am satisfied with this 14PM. This is the first time I’ve felt like I could happily use this phone for longer than two years. I’ll get the battery replaced at some point, but I am thoroughly satisfied with this phone.
Most people still use screen protectors and cases so really this doesn’t bother me either lol , last phone I ever cracked was a galaxy s3 and no idea how it happened, while it was charging
@Mickay1970 yup, got exactly the same. In my opinion, the most beautiful iPhone color ever produced. But I think I will go for a upgrade and go for the pro max 15. And yeah with case and screen protection!😉
But if you didn't have the iPhone 14 Pro as a comparison, would you characterize how much abuse the iPhone 15 took before the case was compromised as "gut wrenching"? I'd like to see comparison against other manufacturers.
This was really satisfying to watch. I think its the rounded screen-to-edge ratio that makes the 15pro appear to shatter earlier than the 14pro. the aluminum rail and squared off screen-to-edge on the 14pro really protects both the screen and the back. I would not want to believe the screen on the 14 is more durable than what's on the 15pro
yeah the whole deal with ceramic shield is just marketing, what really made up most of the drop resistance since the introduction of it on the 12 was the design change to flat edges and the glass sitting fully inside the frame.
Now I slightly feel better that I skipped pre-ordering of iPhone 15 pro 😄 it's safer to wait for the reviews and let the hype cool down and then make a decision
I have been waiting for this! Last year when I bought the new Watch Ultra I barely hit it on the edge of the wall and it put a nice gash in side of it, didn't have much confidence in the titanium to holding up after my watch experience. So glad I didn't pre-order as well, can't wait to see more of these types of videos, even though this pretty much was all I needed to make a decision. If you notice after a few of the drops on the 15 you can actually see that frame around the cameras start to show, (Drop #11, 7:27) what's up with that Apple? Awesome content as always Sam and enjoy Australia while you are there mate. Already looking forward to the iPhone 16 next year!!
Once the glass cracks every drop is going to get significantly worse. The 15 Pro internal frame is aluminum and the Titanium is just an aesthetic outer frame. So, the core structure of the phone is actually aluminum, not titanium. That combined with rounded glass transitioning into the rounded titanium means it has no drop protection compared to the glass being fully enveloped by the stainless steel on the 14 Pro. Once again, it was a decision made by Apple to make the phone look nicer in promo shots and in the store, but instantly needs to be hidden by a case once you actually buy it. It leaves me befuddled that companies keep making design choices that look nicer without a case, but are so poor that they force you to use a case.
My wife has a pretty new 14 pro with a decent moft case. Dropped it once from waist height in the case and the back glass shattered. 🤷♂️Sometimes if you wanna know if a drop is gonna break your phone, you gotta shake a magic 8-ball first and it will let you know
I think what is happening is that titanium being a harder metal, does not disperse shocks as well as stainless steel & aluminum, hence not working well with glass. Not sure how Apple engineers didn't foresee this... This may potentially be the worst iPhone made in terms of durability.
@@ggimtmemes I think you meant 6+. I disagree. Yes, that bent. But the camera housing never fell off & it took a significant amount of force to bend. Plus it had no issues of the screen breaking every time the phone fell, because aluminum disperses shock much better. This on the other hand requires very light pressure to break the back & the glass shatters on the first drop almost every single time. Not to mention the ridiculous price difference between what this costs and what a 6+ costed back in the day.
I actually wondered if the 15 would shatter easier because of the titanium! Titanium is stronger which could hold up better to smaller day-to-day scratches along the edges but because stainless steel is softer, it actually allows for the impact to be taken by the stainless steel, therefore removing the pressure from the screen/back glass from a fall. So what cases are you guys getting? 😉
Except titanium is not stronger. I thought everyone knew that but for some reason people are convinced that a cooler name means it's stronger. No one ever said it was.
@@raidzor5452 They have advertised how much lighter, “stronger” and durable it is. But the thing that most people are overlooking is that it’s an alloy between aluminium and titanium. Most of it, especially inside, is aluminum. The only titanium part is the outside of the side rails.
I agree curved edges obviously will play a big part as they always have but titanium is stronger than steel per mass. Depending on the types/grades but roughly a steel that is stronger than titanium will have 3-4 times the mass. Making that a very large, heavy and uncomfortable phone. If the 14 had 3-4 times more mass of stainless steel than it would be on par with titanium for strength. However, you would also have a super heavy, large, uncomfortable and ugly phone….that would also have a screen/back glass that would be just as likely to break as the titanium iPhone 15. 📱 Let’s just put cases on them and be happy for a lighter and more comfortable phone with a slightly smaller overall size without compromising on the screen size. ✌🏻
Titanium was a marketing tactic. 14>15 for durability. Why do you think they make it “easier” for us to fix. Because it’ll break more which means more money for Apple. Don’t let them fool you.
There’s a difference between durability of a broad force trying to bend the material versus resistances to chips and scratches obtained from drops. I’m guessing titanium in theory is better for resistance to scratches and chips overall but worse at resisting an intentional/constant higher pressure bend. A big problem with the testing methodology here though: once the first glass crack happened on the 15, the following increased damage wasn’t entirely a fair comparison. It was already compromised and doesn’t represent what would have happened if an undamaged iPhone 15 had the same happen.
Remember that the natural titanium model is gonna be the best looking after some drops because the color left after a drop is just gonna be the same. Where as on the others itll shine through, also titanium is really hard to color and anodize Also this is in no way whatsoever a scientific test. The phones are dropped at different angles, different speeds of rotation in the air and dropped on surfaces with differences of topography
No that's true only for natural titanium finish rest all will have a whitish or silver like dent mark cuz the paint is just the upper layer. Underneath titanium will have naked metal colour
While what you say, is very true. I still don't think that you can't deny that the 14 Pro does a way much better job when it comes to this drop test. Even though the angles and different speed/rotations are different. I also agree that the natural titanium is not going to be that impacted when it comes to scratches. I was going for a natural titanium either way because i do think that it's the nicest color of the 4. I also like the white/silver titanium though!
@@DBLCreationsFun fact : Titanium is way more scratch prone than stainless steel. It’s only supposed to be more dent resistant than stainless steel and should provide more protection to the frame which was totally not the case here in this drop test. Looks like they used a cheap quality titanium which they alloyed it with regular aluminium. Just Apple Things I guess.
I am wondering if the titanium outer frame is stiffer than the stainless steel, it would mean that it absorb less energy on impact, and the difference get transmitted directly to the glass?
@@YbalridStainless steel is stronger than titanium. The reason why the iPhone 15 got more damaged was because of that and the fact that the frame is round on the edges along with the glass also being round in the edges. In the iPhone 14 the glass is flush with the frame which allows the the frame to absorb more of the impact which prevents the glass from cracking.
@@CarrotCrunchingWabbit yh then apple must have forgotten that at the price they sell this phones 95% of people use cases 🤣where I can see planned obsolescence is in subpar battery efficiency.
these days I was thinking about which phone to get, because I have an iphone 12 pro max and I didn't know what to choose between the iphone 14 pro or 15 pro, but after this test I was convinced, so I will definitely get the iphone 14 pro. Thanks for this test!!✌️✌️
stronger metal means glass break easier , like hitting a glass with a titanium hammer and hitting a glass with aluminum hammer , the titanium one will make more damage
Possibly the steel frame on the 14 is more flexible (steel has higher elasticity than titanium) and maybe that's why it absorbed some of the shock and passed less of it to the glass, the rigid titanium passed the shock to the glass
@@PCHelperist You are right, I thought the higher elasticity modulus value of the steel means it's more elastic/flexible but it means it's more stiff. It might be related to the fact that the titanium is just a 1mm sheet that is glued to a sub frame of aluminum?
@@MuhammadO19 Yes probably that's the reason why it's not that well performing compared to the steel frame. Also probably some frame design changes could lead to more flex during the energy absorption phase in a drop. It's very hard to tell without even seeing all the components and geometries of the frame and how the backglas is fixed to it. If I remember the old design correctly the backglas had one almost undisturbed geometry (geometry which not lead stress peaks) but the new ones have a lot of these in the camera area (because of its shark radiuses). But that just some unproven thoughts. As sad it's hard to tell by just watching two videos of it.
Sam Khol deserves MILLIONS of views on every video. He puts so much work in. And is so so nice and such a good human bean. I Love Sam & Jon Prosser. F*ck the Internet haters.
Whilst I like this the drop location and impact are different for each phone. This doesn’t really tell you anything. When the 15 pro broke on the back the 14 didn’t even land on the back or the corner. Either way cool video.
I like how the sides are curved on the 15 Pro. But most people who buy this phone will still put a case on. Therefore, I wish that Apple would go back with the flat sides.
I think when Apple changed the internals to make the back panel easily replaceable It might’ve ended up messing up phone’s structural integrity I had that doubt when they announced it
Damn, you're almost convincing me to ditch the case on my 14 pro... also definitely waiting for the 16 Pro to upgrade, not quite enough difference year over year.
Mine has been tested and survived a brutal drop on rock. And… I might have rolled over it. I heard a crunch that scared me. But the edges are just a bit jagged now in two places. I keep it in a case when out and about because I worry about scratches
Even though they're using the same ceramic shield they had the audacity to say it's the strongest glass of any phone... Funnily enough the Victus 2 held up about as well on the S23 to the iPhone 14 Pro, so I'd be interested to see a side by side comparison to the 15 Pro.
This was fun to watch! I feel like both of these took quite a bit of punishment and remained usable. I do think the beveled edges work against the 15 series tho!
Somehow I managed to shatter the rear glass on my 14 pro after only 6 months of use and maybe 5 drops from waist height. It was in a Casetify case throughout it’s life. I really think there is a large element of luck and impact angle at play here.
Im still thinking which to buy, 14 pro max gold colour or 15 pro max blue titanium. Guys help me out... I love that gold colour, but 15 spec looks better and its 20% faster. I play mobile games like call of duty by the way.
I bet @apple would like to see that iPhone 15’s damage. I’ve never seen the camera housing cover come off the phone like that before. That’s very interesting to me.
Stainless steel will scratch easier like your watches however the durability is gonna be much more difficult to break. The 15 pro is not worth buying because many users like the finish on pro models and want to use no case as it feels good but if it cracks so easily it’s definitely worth it because it’ll cost about 500 to repair and 400 in shops given that it’s only been a month old it’s really not worth buying for sure and it’s a good choice I bought the 14 pro
As someone who has vision issues, the pro is non negotiable for me. I need that LiDAR sensor for the detection features in the magnifier, like point and speak, for instance. I was looking at upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro Max from the 13 Pro for the extra safety features, bigger screen, dynamic island, and especially USB-c right? Seeing this video just made me nervous. Even though I know I’d put a case on it but wow. Just wow.
They made the rear on the new iPhone 15 pro more easily repairable. Doing so has affected the structure and the glass isn’t as fixed in place as previous models. Easily repairable = easily damaged.
This one test does not prove beyond doubt the iPhone 15 has slightly flawed robustness however To make it “easily repairable” they had to consider how the glass is fixed in place and how much glass was in contact with the framework behind it. Watch the teardown videos.
Yesterday I picked up the new 15 pro and today there is already a scratch on my screen. I’ve been super careful with it all day and did not drop it even once -.- my case and protector doesn’t come in till the next 2 days. Pray for my iPhone
Never seen anyone doing that sort of durability test before. You pushed it to the boundaries dude. It looks like iPhone 14 pro is way stronger and resistant to drops than a new 15pro. It is a good reason to consider buying an older model. Hope Tim Cook watches your videos. I wish to see his face now. Embarrassed 😳
u guys shouldn’t forget that there is always a bit of luck on these drop tests. if the iphone 15 pro had an unlucky first drop, every following drop will crack it even more of course. same with the 14 pro maybe it just landed pretty lucky. but dont get me wrong of course the 14 pro did a better job
Ya, as wasteful as it would be, there would need to be 5 New phone vs 5 Old ones, with a consistent clamped drop. We'd get a way better consensus but also so so wasteful.
13 and 14s have good durability design but people complain about a squared off edge when they just put them in a case anyway so we get what we ask for.
Don't😂 From the heights you are realistically going to drop the phone off, the 15 pro will look nicer after a while. Regardless, even if you say you are going to drop the phone from either of this heights, both phones will end up ugly and you will then buy a case. At that point you'd want the better phone anyways. Besides the 14 has other problems.

Apple intentionally made the 15 pro easily repairable for a reason you just discovered. 😅
The level of constantly rising excitement I had watching this was blissful! The dedication you went through for this was amazing! I promise you: those of us who really appreciate you REALLY APRPRECIATE YOU!
for crying out loud loool
Having today spent 20 minutes with the 15 pro max I came away not impressed with the “titanium” feel of the device. It feels cheaper than the 14 and 13 in build quality and your drop test confirmed my initial impressions. In fact it wouldn’t surprise me that the so called titanium is more marketing of the composite ‘titanium than what we are led to believe about the metal. Apple cutting cost to improve margins!
Awww ty
For me, it's the opposite...hyping something for nothing. A few grams saved and some new 'miracle' material, it's just YT grifting at this point.
@@AppleTrack i.d.i.o.t.

I wish they keep the flat glass. With the thinner bezels, they could probably make the edge of frame rounded, extend it a little bit outwards (with internal aluminium support) , but keep the flat glass a tiny bit lower than the frame. That would be a lot more durable than switching to a new material.
they're saving that for the iphone 20 probably
@@nadamuchu lmao
0:35 so you’ve never held a iPhone Mini 13, Mini 12, 5, 5S, 4, 4S, 3S, 3… other than those it’s light, right?
Idk why but the stainless steel looked and felt so much more premium and luxurious, this titanium just looks like the aluminium one.

Yes. I too agree with you...
That's right.. I agree
@Mickay1970 yup, got exactly the same.

lol iphone 15 already expensive. The titanium claim should be stronger but reality it scam
The material on the screens are the same, I think the edges on the 15 are the reason for the damage
yeah the whole deal with ceramic shield is just marketing, what really made up most of the drop resistance since the introduction of it on the 12 was the design change to flat edges and the glass sitting fully inside the frame.

Are you going to drop your phone that high? 🙈
IPhone 6 is worse than this
@@ggimtmemes I think you meant 6+.
Yes! same thinking
Makes me glad I already ordered cases for mine. I’m going with Dbrand and Latercase.
Let’s just put cases on them and be happy for a lighter and more comfortable phone with a slightly smaller overall size without compromising on the screen size. ✌🏻
Apple: "We were forced to, so now your phone is slightly more easily repaired. It's also considerably more fragile. You're welcome."
Titanium was a marketing tactic. 14>15 for durability. Why do you think they make it “easier” for us to fix. Because it’ll break more which means more money for Apple. Don’t let them fool you.
There aren’t enough drop tests anymore. Great work Sam. Definitely keeping my 14 pro max
Well no shit, there’s literally no use in upgrading every year. That statement about your current phone is stupid, you just included it cuz why not
There’s a difference between durability of a broad force trying to bend the material versus resistances to chips and scratches obtained from drops.
Where as on the others itll shine through, also titanium is really hard to color and anodize
Also this is in no way whatsoever a scientific test. The phones are dropped at different angles, different speeds of rotation in the air and dropped on surfaces with differences of topography
No one claimed “scientific” lol it’s a basic drop test.
No that's true only for natural titanium finish rest all will have a whitish or silver like dent mark cuz the paint is just the upper layer. Underneath titanium will have naked metal colour
@@Weather_Nerd Then there is literally 0 point of the video.
How did they managed to get the newer to be weaker than the previous model? I understand its due to more rounded edges but cmon apple
In the iPhone 14 the glass is flush with the frame which allows the the frame to absorb more of the impact which prevents the glass from cracking.

stronger metal means glass break easier , like hitting a glass with a titanium hammer and hitting a glass with aluminum hammer , the titanium one will make more damage
Possibly the steel frame on the 14 is more flexible (steel has higher elasticity than titanium) and maybe that's why it absorbed some of the shock and passed less of it to the glass, the rigid titanium passed the shock to the glass
Correct 🎉
Wrong guys. Titanium is way more flexible than Steel. In fact steel is about 2 times stiffer than Ti

Whilst I like this the drop location and impact are different for each phone. This doesn’t really tell you anything. When the 15 pro broke on the back the 14 didn’t even land on the back or the corner.
Either way cool video.
Well depends on the material too that’s why their drop is different weight and stuff
I like how the sides are curved on the 15 Pro. But most people who buy this phone will still put a case on. Therefore, I wish that Apple would go back with the flat sides.
It made the phone less durable as drop tendemcies are higher to land on corner. Like the sample, it made the glass break easily
I have the 15 pro and watching this? My heart looked the same way as the phone throughout the video…..shattered. My anxiety 😭
I think when Apple changed the internals to make the back panel easily replaceable
It might’ve ended up messing up phone’s structural integrity
I had that doubt when they announced it
Apple knows what they did, they put in a flaw on purpose to make ppl get Apple Care so they have to pay to have back glass replaced
Apple making it easier for repairs and customization? Ha!
That’s so disappointing 😮. Thanks for the test though!

I think the replaceable back glass helped the camera to come apart. Now you don't have to replace the whole housing. Just replace your phone.
I feel completely justified in both keeping my 14 Pro Max and continuing to use it caseless in my day-to-day. Thanks Sam!

Ain't got the same luck, gotta change the back glass now
Even though your phone is durable, you shouldn't have it caseless because you never know.

Somehow I managed to shatter the rear glass on my 14 pro after only 6 months of use and maybe 5 drops from waist height. It was in a Casetify case throughout it’s life. I really think there is a large element of luck and impact angle at play here.

They made the rear on the new iPhone 15 pro more easily repairable. Doing so has affected the structure and the glass isn’t as fixed in place as previous models. Easily repairable = easily damaged.
Thats not an accurate assesment.

This one test does not prove beyond doubt the iPhone 15 has slightly flawed robustness however To make it “easily repairable” they had to consider how the glass is fixed in place and how much glass was in contact with the framework behind it. Watch the teardown videos.

It’s not luck bro, how many times does the 14 pro get lucky?
To not get cracked up until the very last drop can’t be luck.

Thank you for this! You actually just convinced me to just get the iPhone 14 Pro instead of 15 Pro. My heart skips every time I hear the phones fall 😂
Or just use a case and get the better iPhone.
No way should anyone get the older model unless it’s much cheaper. Case. Problem solved.
Don't😂 From the heights you are realistically going to drop the phone off, the 15 pro will look nicer after a while. Regardless, even if you say you are going to drop the phone from either of this heights, both phones will end up ugly and you will then buy a case. At that point you'd want the better phone anyways. Besides the 14 has other problems.
well, the 15 pro its much less weight than the 14 pro so its not just about the durability... get 15 pro man... its the same price...
Get the 15 Pro/Pro Max, i don't think anyone buys these phones to not protect it and drop it so just go for it. I'll also upgrade from my 12 mini to 15 Pro Max i'm hyped.
