The amazing bassist of this video is Avi Kaplan. The original bassist. The bassist has changed, i believe the new bassist's name is matt
Pentatonix fans often use the word "Mitchslapped" to refer to the moment a new listener realizes that high, pure vocal is actual Mitch.
Lol I’m learning I’m learning
These wonderful kids have come such a long way! I am so proud of them! Going to see them again this summer! And the other group you couldn't think of is Home Free. Also excellent!
@Wolliofficial Avi is the base I believe, he is solo now.
My favorite “Mitchslap” is still on the Sing-Off when they did the Florence & The Machine song. 🤯❤
This kind of music is what I imagine plays in heaven
you do realize they are ALL THE INSTRUMENTALS in their vocals too!! they are amazing
"My next-door neighbors gonna know this song when I'm done" is the best line I've ever heard. Absolutely captures the vibe, man!
This song is fire
Loud and clear.
Yeah..I love it too! One of my fave song!
Best comment EVER!😂
Most dont realize that there are no instruments - it is all human...
Those lows are from Avi Kaplan (Jesus-in-the-Beanie). When Avi sings, Scott Hoying (blond baritone) takes the bass line. Kirstin Maldonado is the mezzo soprano, a new mother, and Broadway veteran. Mtich Grassi (the Hat!) is a counter-tenor, and is suspected of being some kind of alien. Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer, also fine tenor, cello player and many other talents. The group won "The Sing Off" in 2011. . Matt Sallee has been the bass since the end of 2017, after Avi left (great solo work!). You'll soon have lots of people telling you more than you ever wanted to know about PTX. Hark! Do you hear that rumble? The Pentaholics are coming!
Those lows were everything this ground is super talented
Hark! Do you hear the rumble? What a perfect description, well done!
Pentaholic since day 1, reporting for duty! 🫡😂
"and is suspected of being some kind of alien"
That made me laugh far harder than I was prepared for
@@pjb3583 I know, right?
Mitch gives goose bumbs everytime.
You HAVE to hear Mary Do You Know. Hallelujah was the only song I knew by them, and then I heard Mary Do You Know, and both of them are fantastic!!!
Oh my gosh, YES!!!
I always get excited when a producer reacts to acapella music, because your ears are meant to be fine tuned for balance and textures. You appreciate it on a whole different level.
The voice is an instrument as well hence vocal chords lol also thanks for watching
My 30yo daughter introduced me to them. I've been hooked since.. that was 2 yrs ago. LOVE them!
The falsetto his name is Mitch and that dude can THROW DOWN one of the best voices
I have ever heard. Keep in mind all the instruments you hear and the nests that’s ALL beat boxing no instruments no digital instruments all by voice.
These people are true artists. When the voices are there there's nothing else required. Utter perfection.
Pentatonix is AWESOME!!!❤❤❤
Pentatonix is an incredible group
Their regular sound mixer is Ed Boyer, who does a lot of work for various a cappella groups I believe. He sure knows what he's doing with vocal harmonies. Mind you, with PTX he's starting with the highest quality basic material - if you check out live performances (Popspring 2016 is a good one) you'll realize how closely they can approximate the studio version in real life. Aside from the five vocalists (six, counting the excellent bass who came in 2017 replacing the one in this video) and Ed, the silent extra member, and secret sauce, is Ben Bram their arranger and collaborator from the very beginning. All those flowing harmonies and little surprises - that's Ben Bram at work either coming up with the ideas himself or coordinating the ideas that all the band members bring forward. He - and they - can work in just about any genre. Have fun if you decide to jump in this rabbit-hole; you won't be disappointed!
That’s dope I’m learning from every one of ya commenting I’m taking notes thanks a lot also I appreciate you watching my channel
My (#1) FAVORITE song from Pentatonix!! 🙏🏼❤️🔥👏🏼💯🥰
In 1949 a young man named Leonard Cohen wrote this sone and it took till recently for it to be appreciated. He sings it himself and it is as fantastic as the voices in this group.
Now you need to hear them sing "Mary, did you know?"
I have it in my playlist please make sure to check it out and thanks for watching
It always surprises me someone says they've never heard the song Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen before. It's one of the most covered songs of all time. I have to say this is a really excellent version. Absolutely love it.
Best cover ive ever heard was made for me by a friend ive never met in real life a wonderful woman i know only as kb met in a chatgroup for struggling addicts if i ever feel like relapsing i put it on onenof two things will happen i either break and start sobbing and loose the will to do anything mutch less get drugs or i get a fire inside like no other to power through the bullshit either way its completely effective at keeping me sober
Do they realize it is a song about sex?
Leonard Cohen ❤ 🇨🇦
I totally agree, vocally they are so on point! Leonard Cohen's version has a soul!
@@FirstBossWolf how so?
The beauty of accapella, right? :) warm mama karma hugs! XXX
'love is not a victory march, its a cold and its a broken - Hallelujah'. This verse alone is so powerful and so true ❤ Love is salvation to us humans. Love is letting all negativity go, letting your past go, that dark cloud that's creeping behind you, forgetting all of that and turn to god! Turn to good no matter how 'cold and broken' you feel. Hallelujah!
Pentatonix
They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
The founding members are:-
Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);
Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on UA-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his UA-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on UA-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on UA-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET!
They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star!
Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
When I say u gave me an entire history lesson and I literally read everything u wrote word for word wow this is great info and sad that Avi had to leave hope his family is ok …and I started to notice that all percussion and instrument is all done by vocals they are amazing and super talented ….I appreciate you
I’m going to see them in live concert in Bristol, VA, in August 2023! I can hardly wait!! My favorite group ever! I loved your reaction, subbed and eager to hear more of your reactions! Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much for this comprehensive background & precís of recent events! 💜 I wish I could bookmark a comment in YT.... 🤓
@@bonniedecuir2083 you will love it. I got to see them Christmas week in Sugarland, TX and it was worth to 2 hr drive-1 way to see them. :)
@@catriverotter9527 I think there is a way to see everything you have liked (depending on how your settings are). You could use that as a sort of bookmark or take a screen shot. Just thoughts. :)
Panatonix has been around for a minute. Their harmony is exquisite! There are only a few groups out there like this but they are like a needle in a haystack. Hard to find but when you do....
Well, it's AWESOME!!
"My neighbors will know this song" is such solid praise! Hope you get in to the vast catalogue of ptx music! And there is a video of them recording in studio that I have a feeling you'll enjoy. The recording of evergreen (17 minute version)
I’ll take a look and thanks for watching
When you first started saying how good they were, I was like, "just you wait.." 😁
This video reminds me a lot of the video of Eric Burden & The Animals singing House of the Rising Sun. Both show the group walking & singing & the sound of them raises goosebumps. Nailed it.
Music is the great equalizer ❤
They are the best singing group EVER! I'm 82 and have heard them all. Please react to more. They have about 300 videos to watch. You won't be disappointed.
I’m on it I tried releasing two more today and it was blocked for some reason I will see why
Chills. Every time.
I loved your reactions to Pentatonix Hallelujah ❤❤❤
This is song is one of my top 10 song in the universe! I don't think I've ever heard a bad version of it either. Love, love, love.
If you like "teamwork makes dreamwork" ideas, check out their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". Thank you for your reaction. So glad you appreciated their talent and Ed Boyer's mixing skills.
Yeah ed is def nice and so are the rest of the crew and thanks I’ll check it out also thanks for watching
💯. I wasn’t ever really a big Lennon fan but I LOVE Imagine by Pentatonix.
THEY'RE THE BOMB !
Every time I hear the song I get a lump in my throat and my heart begins to sing. I have been on this planet for 58 years I have listened to a lot of music oh, I have a lot of favorite songs. But this one by far tops them all. Each and every time I hear it I feel that much closer to father open your hearts people feel the love and like father in you'll never know a greater love than what he has for you. And I say "hallelujah"!!!!!!!
Goosebumps
Amazing grace my chains are gone by them is amazing too
Took my daughter in aug to see them amd theyre absolutely amazing in person 🩷🩵
And when they sing live they sound just as AMAZING
I remember they first built the group for the show Sing-Off over 10 years ago now. Sometimes you just find the right people that work together perfectly.
Yeah they’re like holy matrimony lol
It was written in the 60's it came out earlier acrossed the ocean. It's the best
Beautiful voices. 😊
Made me cry.
This song sneaks into my life from time to time and makes me cry too.... Today again... Peace.
This is a beautiful song. Acapella makes it even more impressive.
Coming from Utah, i Love the scenery! The Great Salt Lake Salt Flats are the perfect background for them! The way at times it looks like they're floating in the air. Or you can see the sky reflected on the ground. Not knowing where you're at. Beautiful! Perfect with them.
This is the best version of the song ❤❤
Home free Man of constant sorrow for outstanding bass
Goose bumps, I love this song
They also don't use any music background in this song. Its all them vocal and feet stomp. They are amazing
Welcome to the wonderful world of Pentatonix! They are PHENOMENAL ❤️🔥🙌
Thanks for watching AJ
@@PlayBoyHustlazTV You have just been "Mitch- Slapped " (the gent with the high voice)
Amen ❤
Mitch slapped and “The Mitch Effect” are real!
I get full body chills every time Mitch hits those notes! Amazing
They are amazing
This song was obviously produced very well, but they also have sung it live on TV and it sounds remarkably the same. Their "Daft Punk" medley won a Grammy for Best Arrangement and the video was produced for a 3-figure budget by the group themselves. Also, their "90's Dance Medley" will blow your mind. PTX as they're called has a HUGE catalog, so your trip down the rabbit hole will be extensive.
I love how you reacted to this song. This is one of the most moving and profound songs I've ever heard... I I've it that you love it!
Thanks
I absolutely love them! I can’t choose one as my favorite because each singer is awesome! I want something by them playing at my funeral!
Those lows are Avi Kaplan Basso Profundo extraordinaire! Also the second soloist. He has since left the group on good terms for personal reasons, and now has a stellar solo career going. Change on the Rise is his most popular and his latest album is the Shooter Jennings produced Floating on a Dream. Would love to see you react to his music. The last soloist is Mitch Grassi Counter Tenor he and Avi Kaplan have been referred to as generational voices.
Amazing voices right
Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! These guys are so talented it is amazing! They just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and have earned multiple Grammys. They are the reason for the resurgence in acapella groups! Please watch their version of The Prayer. They earned Grammy's for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Jolene (with Dolly Parton). Just subbed for more Pentatonix reactions!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the Sub and I’m on it I will take notes
Watch Gold, Can’t Hold Us, Imagine. All will blow your mind! ❤❤ Welcome to PTX!!!
Pentatonix is one of the few groups who really don't need a lot of help from the studio. they sound just as good live as they do in vids. If you haven't heard their Sound of Silence, I totally recommend. these two songs are my favorites ever
Welcome to the long winding road of Pentatonix, you are in for the journey of your life 😊 Pentatonix never ceases to amaze me, at just how incredibly talented they are, and take their voices to newer levels, we have never heard before.....there is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 *Not only their voices, but their delivery is also their gift!*
And there it is! the Mitch slapped! Never gets old.
Lol
One of the better versions I've heard. I still love the Jeff Buckley over everyone.
I heard this song by them for the first time this morning, and I can’t get it out of my head! As I sang along I surprised myself at the end when I sang a whole line of chords not in their song, and it fit in so nicely!
Thank you for reacting to this beautiful Pentatonix video. I'm happy that you enjoyed it. I look forward to more of your reactions to Pentatonix videos. Pentatonix reaction suggestions: For another classic, check out "Sound Of Silence"; for a fun older video, "Can't Hold Us"; for a fun EDM medley "Daft Punk" medley; for pure awesomeness "Amazing Grace".
I’m on it thanks I just uploaded a new one check it out
They were “California roll” on the masked singer this season!!
That's ethereal Dawg.
Music that speaks to the soul.
We, Pentaholics, who love them. Welcome you! Ed Boyer does their mixing and he’s a boss ,
as are all associated with PTX 200 plus songs, covers and originals. They never miss.
If you join us down this rabbithole you will be amazed again and again.
Try covers, Problem, Shallow, Havana, Bohemian Rhapsody, Gold, Daft Punk Medley, Evolution Of Micheal Jackson
Or originals. Happy Now, Cracked, Sing, Water, Can’t Sleep Love, coffee in Bed
Honestly. Look at their videos and pick one 😂
I’m taking notes thanks lol
Sublime!
You will NOT regret looking into more of their music, I went down the rabbit hole last fall and do not regret it at all despite being a huge country fan
I’m knee deep in it as we speak lol
The first time I heard this song I cried with joy.
I've got goosebumps on top of other goosebumps... GLORY be to GOD.
I’ve been a fan since their first appearance on The Sing Off. They are just as good in person. If you ever get a chance to see them, GO! :)
I’ll suggest a variety of songs
ORIGINALS (different members helped write each of these songs): “Sing”, “Be My Eyes”, “Breakfast in Bed”
Medleys: “Daft Punk” (won a Grammy), 90’s Dance Medley, Evolution of Music (any of the Evolution videos)
Classic covers: “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “The Prayer”, my mind just went blank.
And just a personal favorite, “Come Along”. Always makes me feel up!
Would it be crazy for me to say everytime I hear this when I’m sick I start to feeeel so much better 😭 😭
Incredible vocal band, they all can really sing, but that arrangement? I don;t know whether the group or someone else did the arrangement, but its magical!
You’re headed down the beautiful PTX rabbit hole. They’re known for amazing Christmas cover songs you’ll never listen to the same way again.
Please listen and watch them do this live at Christmas time, even better!
Vocals are It!
Avi with hat and beard is bass, but when he sings his special, Scott sings bass for him.
Big hat guy is Mitch a true countertenor.
The beat boxer has a beautiful voice and is an excellent cellist.
Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody......may very well make your head explode!
Dang man!! Wow gave me goosebumps.
Amen.
Acapella....all voice, no instruments whatsoever!!!! They are making all the sounds themselves!!!!! Priceless, and true sound!!!
I love Say Something, Havana, and Mad World
New sub. This was the first song I heard by them, too. I played it for my mom the night my father died. New Years Eve, 2016 sitting on the small hill in Yuma Regional Medical Center parking lot watching fireworks displays going off all around town. It was beautiful and a fitting goodbye. Welcome to the rabbit hole.
I've been listening to pentatonix since they first performed
True fan I’m jealous lol
@@PlayBoyHustlazTV heh unfortunately I never got to go to any of their concerts so I'm not sure I'd call myself a true fan
That video is approaching one billion views
New subscriber here for more Pentatonix !! These guys ( and gal) are 3 time Grammy winners who just got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The've been a group since 2011 and have had only one change in members...Avi Kaplan ( the bass with the beanie and long dark hair) left in 2017 amicably ...he's doing excellent solo work now...and Matt Sallee joined the group 6 months later...and has been a joy to listen to.
They have some 200+ songs in their discography, some covers and some originals...all well worth a reaction!
There's been quite a few suggestions given by other commenters and their selections are all great. Please give some of them a try. Looking forward to seeing more PTX reactions!
Thanks I appreciate it . I just uploaded bohemian rhapsody check it out
This is one of my all time favorite songs. This is one of the best versions. Pentatonix blows me away.
Kristen is also a soprano. This song is great, however list to their cover of “The Prayer”, the official video. It will knock your socks off. If you can listen all the way through without stopping, what an experience. The singers pull you right in. Thanks again for a great reaction.
Your welcome and thank u for watching I will def take a look
So, just a note, this is actually Pentatonix covering Hallelujah, the song was originally performed by Leonard Cohen in 1984. This arrangement is them, though... Well, Ben Bram, but for them.
Gotta check out KD lang's version of this song. she KILLS it, totally different vibe
That “low” would be the awesome Avi Kaplan. He is wearing the beanie. Watch the Sing-Off season they were on. You will be addicted. ❤
Individually they would be great, but together they’re unbelievable.
Aren't they phenomenal? Everything they sing hits me to the core.
Love
The hair on my arms is standing up. Only happens wi5h purest voices.
