When I grew up there in the 70s - 90s, it was certainly no economic boomtown, but people took pride in the place. Within a 4-5 block radius of Ellwood Park there was a cast of characters a Hollywood screenwriter would have had a field day with. It was common to see everyday examples of what describes the grit and toughness of the inner city. A tough , competitive place, for sure, but with a great sense of humor. Never a dull moment!!! I'll always be proud to say I'm from ELLWOOD PARK.
I had a temporary work assignment at Pompeiian Olive Oil Co.. I took the 22 bus and would get off @ Pulaski and Highalnd and I could smell the garbage at five in the morning. When I finished my shift I walked to the Johns Hopkins metro station to return home and the area was a dump until I got to the JHH campus. This is when I started carrying a knife.
