Zach thanks for the video. I am miltary, finally close to my 12 year old son and I found a 19' 1972, 120hp Mercruiser for $100 with trailer. The boat is on bad condition but the times I have to bound with my son working on it is priceless!!. No clues about boats, no experiences with engine, but thanks to your videos the task is coming alone. I wonder if I can reach you if I have any question related to the boat. Once again, thanks for the videos of the rebuild of your boat!!
@@ZachsGarage1 thanks so much for your reply. As military I get busy sometimes, sorry for the delay response. I will contact you by email, my son will be glad to hear that
When u hone the cylinder bores at home use a 50/50 mixture of oil and varsol in a spray bottle and use as much as u can. Best to remove your crankshaft first also.
It was a hard decision, but I am glad I got the cylinders rebored +.030" now the cylinders are like brand new. Future video coming soon on reassembling the engine!
Here is a little advise for you A you did not use enough oil. B. You made those lines in the cylinder by jerking the stopped hone out without it turning (go back and look at the first cylinder you did the same to it) C your drill is marginal you need to turn the hone and keep it moveing in and out at a slow but steady pace also the hone looked to big for that piston bore. I use a three stone hone that has three different grit stones fine, medium, and coarse it also has an adjustable spring to control the outward pressure of the stones. The hard part is knowing when to change to the next stone. Your single ball hone is more for getting a good crosshatch pattern to hold oil while your new rings wear or break in to seal against the cylinder wall. These are all things we all have to learn keep gaveling fun and learning
I think I heard that you had the cylinders re bored by .03”. Did the stock pistons work as a replacement or did you need to get larger pistons or different than stock rings?
That is correct, I actually did not try the stock pistons to find out. I went straight to larger pistons. And because silver some of the rings had broke on the piston that was stuck, I bought larger rings as well
@@ZachsGarage1 Thanks. Great info. During the conversation did you request a bore of + .03 or is that a standard machine shops deliver? I noticed the Amazon link you provided had a couple of overbore options. Mostly just curious how the conversation with the machine shop went as I prep to have a similar discussion.
@@MatthewPierce9 It seems like that is standard. But the machine shop also recommended it for the amount needed to get the groove out of my 4th cylinder.
@@ZachsGarage1 thank you do you know what size rod bearings you got ? i currently trying to buy now and i notice their two sizes :9 serial numbers for rod bearing stamped on 5453696 151a 01 0.025 sizes you can get 0.713” 0.842” wondering if you know

You need a better drill you can tighten with a key
When you read my earlier post read single ball as DINGLE ball that is the mechanics slang name for it.
where did you get your flex hone at? and is there a part # or SKU on the box?

You made the right decision. I know it's hard when it's that close.

@@ZachsGarage1 great info. Thank you.
You are supposed to immediately wipe it down after you hone the cylinders a few times and not keep on going or else you make more damage than good.
Thanks for the info!
