      Ftr my pain tolerance is relatively high, but for some reason when I rode skyrush it was unreasonably rough, which probably added to the lapbar being pushed down even more, but the point still stands that it actually put me in an absurd amount of pain. Def more than the average ride for sure, but it still goes to show that the restraints actually do cause unbearable pain on select rides

    Something that enthusiasts don’t know about with B&M vest restraints is that there are multiple types of them. All the American B&Ms with vests have gen. 1 restraints but in 2018 B&M made gen. 2 vests which are actually amazing. Like I prefer them to clamshells in some situations.

    Skyrush's restraints are, in fact, painful. I dont complain about restraints a lot, but all I could think about was being stapled the whole ride. I have really thick legs, so that may be why you dont feel pain while others do.

    • @sprawlz6466
      @sprawlz6466 3 роки тому +5

      I had a couple semi painful rides until I figured out that if you slide forward in the seat a couple inches, it doesn’t really hurt at all. I also noticed that if you pull it down right to where it lightly touches your leg, then it won’t really clamp down as much. Idk I didn’t have a huge problem with that. The biggest issue is really just how far down your thigh it actually touch’s your leg which is why I suggest scooting forward a bit.

    • @Cmbgo98
      @Cmbgo98 3 роки тому +5

      Agreed. I absolutely love Skyrush's layout, and the winged coaster train design which is in my opinion the best in the industry, but the restraints straight up damn near ruin the ride for me. I'll ride it 2 times with no lines tops before I begin to physically lose feeling in my legs and get legitimately painful pins and needles. One time at Hershey someone was having trouble fitting in the restraints at the station ahead of our train so we had to sit on the brake run for a little while and my legs got so numb I couldn't stand when we pulled into the station and had searing pain when I finally did get feeling back to them... That was my first and only ride that day. It still boggles my mind that Hershey and Intamin have stuck with those restraints. Hershey because they've been getting complaints since day 1 about them and haven't asked for them to be redesigned fully and Intamin because they installed them AGAIN on Flying Aces at Ferrari World despite getting complaints on Skyrush's design for almost 4 years.
      I think its the ever tightening hydraulic mechanism with the intense high g-force drops/layout combined with the lapbar wedge shaped design that really kills it tbh, if it had a different mechanism or a different design like the B&M or RMC lapbars it wouldn't nearly be that bad. Combined though it absolutely crushes your thighs.

    The one thing you have to remember with certain restraints like comfort collars and shin guards that seem unnecessary is that parks have to get the ride insured. Insurance companies tend to like the more restrictive restraints. It makes sense too. Lap Bars leave the ride ops more room fo error compared to OTSR's where you're aren't really ever going to get ejected.

    • @mt_xing
      @mt_xing 3 роки тому +8

      Yeah afaik this is why Cedar Fair added seat belts to their B&Ms that originally opened without them. I hear it was an insurance issue, though I've never seen any primary sources for that.

    • @DanielBlaney
      @DanielBlaney 3 роки тому

      The comfort collars don't actually restrain the riders at all though. In fact they frequently come undone during the ride and there are signs all over saying that may happen.

    The single worst restraints I've experienced are on the Wonder Woman Golden Lasso Coaster. They're hard vest restraints like the comfort collars, but with less height on the torso. So if you have a longer than average torso (not larger around-- plenty of heavier guests have had no trouble), it forces you into a hunched position while digging into your collarbone. Like, my collarbone was legit bruised after a round with Wonder Woman.

    Something that never gets talked about, those B&M vest restraints, they allow more people to ride, they are way more accommodating then the old style. I believe this is primarily why they exist, allow guests of larger sizes to ride, or ride in a more comfortable way. They are better overall for the general public / park operations.

    Most of the Intamin's with the straps would be really uncomfortable with T-bars. Maverick and I305 have such violent transitions that you'd be slamming into your neighbor without those shoulder-guards. The only Intamin OTSRs I really thought actually hurt the ride were the ones on Ka. Maverick, I305, Cheetah Hunt, Storm Runner...I barely noticed them and even if they were were a little restrictive, it was such a minor concern compared to everything else great about the ride.

It is a great little large wild mouse, but damn those shin guards make it so I dont fit in without a contortionist routine, and if you do fit normally those shin guards are taking you out when they get stapled to you and you have lots of lap bar room.

    Can confirm, Velocicoaster's lap bar is one of my favorite restraints I've experienced. Not uncomfortable at all, open for airtime, and very secure. An Over-the-shoulder restraint like what's on Cheetah Hunt would *really* hurt the ride, interfering with the absolutely bonkers airtime and heavily dampening the Mosasaurus roll at the end.
    Something of note with Skyrush in particular - here's what might be happening (AKA the power of expectations).
    People online mention the uncomfortable restraints and how it's a very notable drawback to the ride. Then, people hear that and expect, "Oh, the restraints are uncomfortable." Then, for the entirety of the ride, they're not focusing on the g-forces or airtime, their attention is glued to how uncomfortable they are thanks to the restraints. This likely results in them enjoying the ride less because they spent the entire runtime of the ride paying attention to the restraint.

    Skyrush's restraints are definitely tight and uncomfortable, but once you're moving you don't notice them. The reason they're tight is because they only clamp your thighs and that is a huge part of what makes the ride so incredible. You have the most insane amount of freedom and mobility in your upper body because they never touch your waist or stomach in any way. With more traditional restraints, I think Skyrush would be boring. The ejector air and whippiness mostly exists because of your freedom to move your upper body, you feel like you're being folded over yourself every time it changes direction

    Skyrush’s restraints are literally the only time I’ve felt true pain on a coaster. I have no analysis of the ride because of the piercing pain in my legs the whole time. I was just suffering and waiting for it to be over. Literally the worst coaster I’ve been on out of 348 because the restraints. But SLCs, rough woodies, etc. I agree the pain is way more mild than people say, at least in my experience.

    I will say on the topic of vest restraints that, while my friends were perfectly comfortable, the ones on batman at six flags discovery kingdom didn’t quite fit me right but weren’t adjustable and would push under and into my collar bone, which while being bearable, definitely did hurt a bit

    Outlaw Run's lap bar with shin guards, i hate them, as a person who is 6"2, it is very uncomfortable to have my legs be pushed back the entire ride. (I also didn't know about the first drop, I was in the back right seat)

    I want to talk about Mack lap bars real quick. They are reasonably comfortable, but they always come down and staple you during the ride. Riding DC Rivals, I had to pull up the lap bar the whole time to not get stapled. You can still get some airtime after getting stapled but that final sequence of hills isn’t the same when you don’t have room.

    My hot take: Everyone complains about the current restraints on Superman (Six Flags New England), but not nearly as much about the restraints on Wicked Cyclone, and they're not that different. But somehow on Superman it's this huge demerit to the ride. I think it's probably because on Superman they get compared to the old T-bar restraints, but I never rode it with those.

    Other than not flying out of the ride, I barely noticed the restraint on velocicoaster! It was such an open feeling, giving a nice bit of space for the copious anounts of airtime in that ride. Nothing like getting whipped out of your seat and back in it on the mosasaurus roll 🤣🤣

    I personally am not fond of the clamshell. It's purely psychological though, I feel like at least with a lap bar if it came undone for any reason I can hold onto it to stay in my seat, if a claim shell disengaged for whatever reason; especially for anything with staggered seating it seems like it can lurch so far forward that I'd be absolutely fucked. Maybe that's a good thing to add to the thrill, but it's terrifying.
    But I'm also one of those people who doesn't throw their hands in the air on a drop, and clinging to the restraint for dear life.

    a bit late to the vid, but as a tall person (wasn't allowed on a few rides at cedar point), if I say something hurts, its because my thigh bones feel like they're going to snap. Sky Rush is great but those restraints are genuinely painful, especially on multiple rides. One time there was a stupid short wait and I got around 5 rides in and it was difficult to walk after the 4th and 5th, it’s not that bad on your first go but on repeats it does add up a lot.

  • @HylianAlph

    Y'know I enjoy all of your content and stuff, but I disagreed with a lot of stuff in this video.
    First of all, I don't really get the classification of restraints into those three types. I think lap bars and shoulder harnesses are a good two categories, but vest restraints are just a type of over the shoulder restraint in my opinion. I think it's good to acknowledge the differences between old school shoulder restraints and vest restraints, but are they really two entirely separate categories? They have many big differences, but I think they have more in common than buzz bars and RMC lap bars for instance. But all lap bars are in the same category here? Just a thought.
    Also, some restraints are painful. Maybe you just have a different definition of pain than I do, but just because the pain goes away after you ride doesn't mean it wasn't pain. For example, the shoulder harnesses on older arrow loopers do hurt your head when you bash into them repeatedly. Maybe discomfort is more apt, but I don't understand why you focused on that distinction so hard here.
    I don't say this to be toxic or mean or anything, again I really did enjoy this video. I'm just a guy presenting his opposing opinion, coasters are cool either way.

    I love Giovanola lap bars. They are comfortable no matter how hard you staple yourself. If you put it on just right, it is airtime galore while still keeping you super safe. I also find the B&M OTSRs and vintage Schwarzkopf restraints comfortable as well. I like to try out a roller coaster that is even more forceful than 6 flags over Texas Titan and with comfortable restraints too even if it means going out of state.

    When I became an enthusiast I basically only went to my home park CGA and nothing else, this year I’ve gone to SFDK and SFMM, so I’ve pretty much only knew those great America restraints, flight decks over the shoulder demons uncomfortable older the shoulder patriots over the shoulder gold strikers lap bar and Railblazers (sigh) over the shoulder. I used to think it did not “oh it’s not that bad” but when I started visiting other parks it was like, “WOW, Railblazers restraints suck” it’s not the worst but no where near as good as joker and twisted colossus, and full throttle

    the only coaster ive ridden with the old intamin restraints was stealth at thorpe park, they were okay apart from the fact they really came down during the ride so on the brake run my thighs were being squished it couldve been way worse tho, those miami trips usually have not-so-fun restraints which doesnt help with the fact they generally throw you around a lot
