      No, not the '70s cos the profile would be the same instead of opposite! The med and tweeter was always on the same side! Never an exception in the '70s. Not a single one! And I always hated that waý back then, even. They did that to save manufacturing costs (the only reason I can think of). 😅

    Thanks for reviewing these speakers. I have the Atalante 3 monitors and will only trade up to the 5s if I get a bigger space. The 3s almost have the bass response of my JBL 4319 with their 12" woofers so I can only imagine how the 5s would sound. Basalt has a higher Youngs Modulus than fiberglass and Kevlar going lower and louder before breaking up. And I totally agree with your assessment concerning the mids and highs. They're never shrill, etched or offensive yet I hear so much detail, air and ambience that I lack for nothing in that area.

    If you like imaging, swap the speakers so that the tweeter and med are to the inside, not the outside. Will cut down on cabinet refraction to the listening position.

    Thanks for the review. I recently purchases the Atalante 5 and am really loving them. I should have tried them on the ground. but went straight to the stands in my largish 550 sq foot room. I agree with you comments about the sound profile. Compared to my Spendor D7 (which I sadly sold) the imaging is more diffuse, midrange and treble are smoother and less fatiguing, while bass goes a lot deeper. Maybe giving up some mid-bass punch. Overall, the Atalante 5 are just a more relaxing listen even when I crank the volume as you suggested. A really fantastic value!

    I actually heard the Atlante 5 and its little sibling the Atlante 3 yesterday…. My mind was blown! I even went a little emotional with the 3’s with the song Liberty (Anette Askvik). These speakers do have a refinement, ease, coherency, really deep and wide soundstage, siblance is like non excistant. The bass is like super controlled but not too dry. There is something magistical about these pieces of Art!

    4:46 I agree, and that enclosed cavity inside a dome tweeter has air trapped inside and makes that notable "sippy" sound we hear on most dome tweeters. They are addressing that "sippy" sound with a dampener (a welcoming concept). And this is one reason I don't like normal 2-way speakers. I like the point source sound way better. I build speakers with highly moified FR drivers, driven completely open (and along with a boxed woofer for bass and to warm up the med range). No "sippy" sound cos there is no dust cap to encose any air (just the single open cone). The cone mod involves cuttouts on the cone to act as a free edge cone and also with short slits near and around the center to greatly extend the highs, making them way higher! Sounds as good as great tweeters, without the "sippy" sound. The med range is so clean sounding that it sounds like panel speakers. Best speakers I heard and so cheap! Holographic off the scale. 😅

    Probably not a coincidence that the Atlante 5 uses a 75mm dome midrange driver, as at one time that type of driver was used on high end Dynaudio speakers (such as Contour 4 and Confidence 5). Dynaudio no longer uses a dome midrange in their finished speakers, but not sure if they still make those type of drivers for other speaker manufacturers. Dome midranges were also famous on now discontinued Braun/ADS speakers and currently on PMC and ATC speakers. Back in 1982 I purchased a pair of ADS L810's with a dome midrange, and it was magic.

      Oh, you poor narrow minded "only about speakers" person. There are flat wide speakers from then & long before that can trounce anything you or i may or may not afford s/h unless we had a spare half million, SPARE.
      I defy anyone to spot in blindfold tests "edge difraction" in different makes of slim & wide speakers, yeah, you can measure it but you'll never hear a brilliant old large flat wide speaker & think "That's best ive iver heard, wow & super marvellous but I simply cannot live with that edge diffraction" speaker design is fundamentally unchanged & cabinets go along with fashion. Edge diffraction is a minute negligible unnoticed side effect. Here endeth lessons 1, 2 & 3 of the word according to me.

    The Tweeter and Mid Bass Drivers placed off center improves dispersion and standing wave issues from the speakers front baffle and if I'm not wrong adds to dimensionality. That line triggers me to no end..a d I agree the drivers are awesome. But there is a reason why we progressed to slimmer cabinets. That baffle there will cause nothing but diffraction , it's why you should run speakers like this tweeters on the inside.
      The baffle next to it will not taint the sound field as much.

    when hifi people talk about knowing exactly where the instruments are coming from but even live performances use speakers to blast all the instruments at the same time from the same source point and its also not easy to tell where the guitarist is if you closed your eyes during a live concert? it doesnt make sense to me

    • @Jayiyagi

      Depends on the live music. Many private concerts I have been to are none amplified

    • @vinylrules4838
      @vinylrules4838 10 місяців тому

      I prefer non amplified music or amplification at the source(ie a guitar or synthesizer.) If music must be amplified, it should be amplified in stereo in smaller venues. Drives me crazy in small venues when the sound of the PA doesn't match the location of the instrument on stage. No reason for it. But sound engineers think it always has to be in mono.

    @Jayiyagi The amplifier that made you cry with its presentation The Brunoco Terra is not the best amplifier with the new favourite speaker? it's not scepticism I am reading from your review a conclusion. You said the Atalante is not hard to drive, it may have a benign load but it is a strong load, dips to 3 ohm. All the amplifiers you say work really well are not phased by current needs. Power. Even the NAT's you say "its really beautiful" but not quite like the AGD or Thallo. Given that, is it fair to say the Atalante won't let the Brunoco breath like it would with a higher impedance benign load?

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  10 місяців тому +1

      Very good question. Yes, I found it odd that it didn’t sing like I thought it would with the Brunoco. Don’t get me wrong, it still sounded “good” but it just didn’t sound as good as I hoped to be. Sometimes pairings don’t work out and it is what it is

    When I saw "Dynaudio speaker designer"... the thought that came to mind was "good drivers put together by someone who doesn't know how to design a crossover". That's what all Dynaudio speakers seem to have in common - and, yep... sand cast resistors. Better yet, showing a picture of the crossover, as though it's something to brag about. I guess they figure most people have no idea what they're looking at, and they'd be right.

    • @JurMalafi
      @JurMalafi 9 місяців тому

      Wonder what speakers you own? Shouldn't you qualify your criticism with the speakers you know that have a properly designed crossover? Enlighten us all please.

      @@JurMalafi For sure he's a follower of Danny from GR Research. I'm not saying that parts quality doesn't matter, but I wonder if ppl talking s**t about manufacturers had the opportunity to listen to their products, prior to emit a judgement. Most probably they are just keyboard lions.

    Jay,at the asking price, I don't think it's to much to ask for the drivers to be flush mounted. Also, sand cast resistors, really?

    • @34332
      @34332 10 місяців тому

      Likely a different philosophy. The issue with flush mounting is re-radiation of sound and less with surface-mounted units.

      Dynaudio used to make a dome midrange, so since the designer of this speaker used to work at Dynaudio, maybe some connection there, either directly or indirectly.

    ARID sounds like KEF's Meta technology.....The crossover has sand cast resistors and an iron core inductor....not exactly top notch....I think Danny said with his Brute speakers which have a similar configuration, the tweeter and mids are best on the inside with the speakers straight ahead or slightly toed out so that the wide baffle side reflections aren't dominant and the speakers image more like a narrow baffle design.

    • @raianton
      @raianton 10 місяців тому +2

      The resistor in the signal path are not sandcast but bifilar inductive free types, in the signal path of the midrange it's an air inductor
