  • www.playbill.co... Performers are always in search of that perfect song for their audition book, so we enlisted the pros to help us freshen up your repertoire with new music by songwriters on the contemporary musical theatre circuit. NewMusicalTheatre.com was created by the new crop of songwriters making noise in New York City, and features a collection of material from young writers including Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Alexander Sage Oyen, Zack Zadek and Zoe Sarnak. Brian Lowdermilk took us into the rehearsal room to try out new material with Broadway stars Josh Young.

Can someone please just give him a phone book and let him sing that? I would STILL pay a buttload of money to hear Josh Young sing anything.

Ah! If you've not heard Josh Young before, there's an old UA-cam vid of his theatrical Henrik/ "Later" in A little Night Music. Don't miss it!

Holy shit I don't like Phantom and now I want to see it. But only if he's the Phantom. (to prevent my getting a lot of crap, I have seen other versions. It's the story/characters I don't like, the music is amazing.)

I would say you are a tenor, albeit one with a wonderfully gorgeous tone! “Baritenor” is not a real voice type, just a classification used for lighter baritones that have a higher tesitura (confortable range of about 1.5 octaves) than a standard lyric baritone. At this point they could honestly be called tenors but adding the “bari-“ prefix at the beginning is meant to highlight their ability to sing both parts effectively.
A good example fo this is Ramin Karimloo. The guy is probably a tenor, but his voice is just so bright and velvety that he sounds great singing baritone roles as well.
Your voice is definitely that of a lower tenor, but you lack the same “umph” on your lower notes. Your high notes come out effortlessly, something which a baritone would struggle with a lot.
Other than that, great job! You could learn to let more air out when singing, as I feel like you could easily be much louder. You have a nice voice that fits the music you are singing very well.
Take what I tell you with a grain of salt though, because I don’t know you nearly enough to make expert decisions on what you do with your voice. Stick with what feels comfortable.
